" 20th century, no detectable water vannr nr J ur. Mess said it Is possible that a mere glaze of frost covers vapor or oxygen in its atmosphere. This is the conclusion of scientists who recently returned from an observation post near the summit of the volcano Mauna Loa on Hawaii. The ex pedition was sponsored jointly by the National Geographic So ciety and the National Bureau of Standards. The project was led by Dr. C. C. Kiess, a veteran spectroscop ist of the Bureau. He was assist ed by C. H. Corliss, of the Bu reau's spectroscopy section, and their respective wives, Mrs. Har riet Kiess and Mrs. Edith Cor liss, both skilled spectroscopists. Using the most powerful and sensitive spectroscopic equip ment now available, the husband-wife teams sought an an swer to one of Mars' most tan talizing mysteries: "Does it have sufficient oxygen and moisture to maintain forms of life simi lar to those on earth?" Life Not Ruled Out Spectro-analysis of the sun light reflected from Mars showed no atmospheric features simi lar to those on earth, but Dr. Kiess said their findings do not preclude life on the red planet Mars' poles. A thin layer could reflect sunlight dazzlingly, yet emit insufficient water vapor to be measured at present on earth. Some scientists. Dr. Kiess not ed, believe lichens or plants of a similarly simple nature exist on Mars. Lichens, for example, can withstand extremes of drought, heat, and cold. The Kiesses and Corlisses ar rived at Hilo. Hawaii, in late June and trucked their equip ment to the United States Weath er Bureau's new Mnuna Loa Ob servatory at 11.134 feet. The station stands about 5,000 feet over the inversion layer of the trade-wind belt, which means that observations could be taken in clear, crisp night air well above the greater portion of water vapor in the earth's atmos phere. "The scene In almost every direction from our station was one of vast volcanic devasta-, tion, ' Dr. Kiess said. "Nothing is seen but cinders of all sizes resembling coke, and flow-lava which has taken on all kinds of grotesque shapes." Naneo vour pocer or Oxygen Atmosphere In a large spectrograph the scientists mounted two diffrac tion gratings screenlike de vices that spread light into a spectrum. One grating was ruled with about 90,000 parallel lines, 15.000 per inch, to record the spectra on a scaie of 125 ang strom units to the inch. The other grating, with about 180,000 rulings, 30,000 to the inch, re corded the spectra on a scale of 50 angstrom units per inch. During July the couples made long, intensive observations of Mars. Mrs. Kiess and Mrs. Cor liss kept house in the isolated ob servatory, as well as taking their regular rorns at the spectro graph. With the two gratings, the scientists obtained two excellent sets of deep-red photographs re cording the yellow, orange and red spectral regions. It is in these regions that the spectro graph shows strong absorption bands caused by oxygen and water vapor in the earth's atmos phere. Dr. Kiess and his colleagues knew that if similar absorption was taking place in Mars' at mosphere, bands identical with those of the earth would show up on the spectrograph. How ever, it would be possible to de tect any Martian bands easily because the speed with which the two planets approached each other in July was sufficient to cause a shift of lines in Mars' spectrum. In addition to comparing the spectra of earth and Mars, that of the moon was photographed on the same plate. Faint Atmospheric Belts Mars, which has been found to have faint atmospheric belts, showed no spectral features due to oxygen and water vapor that were different from those of the moon, which has no atmosphere. "We must therefore conclude," Dr. Kiess said, "that if oxygen and water vapor exist in the atmosphere of Mars, their amounts must be too small to be detected spectroscopically." At Bloemfontein, South Africa, the Mars Expedition of the Society and Arizona's Lowell Observatory meanwhile has been studying Mars for the last three months. Under the direction of planet expert Dr. E. C. Slipher, observers have watched the south polar cap shrink as spring advances across the planet. Dr. Slipher has long studied the sea sonal advance of blue-green areas on Mars, giving credence to the belief that some type of life, however primitive, exists there. Shrimp Marked for Protection Study Galveston, Tex. 0J.R) Biologists of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service have begun a full-scale study to protect and even expand the 5100,000,000 a year shrimp fishing industry of the Texas Gulf Coast. A technique for marking the shrimp with dye to study their life and habits was perfected by Charles Dawson of the marine bi ology department of the Univer sity pf Texas to make the study possible. A large two-story building is being remodeled at Fort Crock ett, an abandoned Army base, in to a special laboratory for the study and biologist Tom Costel lo, in charge, said marked shrimp will be placed in the Gulf of Mexico water, probably next spring. The shrimp later will be caught by commercial and sports fish ermen and returned to the lab oratory for study. Costello said the purpose of the study will be to correlate the ef fects of natural factors with the known fluctuations in population among the Gulf shrimp. In oth er words, what does or does not affect the shrimp population? 4-We are interested in the ef fect solar radiation has on shrimp as well as the effects of temper ature and nutrient changes." Cos tello said. "'Salinity (salt) factors will also be investigated."
