He is on the alert for the unusual. In other words, they are Samaritans; also fine Americans. The Postal Service News tells of many a man who, while go ing about his "appointed rounds" dropped his mail bag to save a life. "Sometimes." according to the Post Office Department, "they are so modest, we have to go to the authorities to learn their identity." Take the case of mail-lugger Robert L. (Trot) Walker. He was prowling his beat when he heard the wail of small children. That was in Fort Pierce, Fla. A house was on fire,, and "Trot" kicked his way through burning debris to rescue four small chil dren. After that chore, he picked tip his sack of mail and went about his business. Nobody .knew that our "Trot" was the hero of the piece until the kids' . parents went to the post office to learn the name of the mail man on the beat. In the same state, in Lake City, a kick and a holler from Tort Pierce carrier Joe T. Mc Cormick has honored for saving tome kids from another flaming home. After that heroic perform ance, postmaster Grady A. War ren said: "He was so modest we didn't know anything about it until, the fire chief told me." Typical of the spontaneous reaction to a mailman's love of his "customers," most of whom he never sees, was the remark that Jesse N. Hawkins of the Washington, D. C. post office made after he had saved mother and. kid from a burning house. All Jesse said was: had to I heard a child cry." Heroes unsung. William L. Pllz and Alvin Metzger of the' Paramus, N. J., post office rescued a crippled fellow from his blazing wheel chair. They turned the $20 tip the man's son gave them to the Arthritic and Rheumatism Foundation. Not all of the cases, of course, involve the threat of a fiery death. Mailmen are alert when there is an automobile accident where folks are pinned under the tangle of steel. There was a case not long ago when a photographer for the Jersey Journal and Ob server took a picture. His cap tion said: "Jersey City girl lies bleeding and hurt on pavement as ambulance driver and attend ant lift another girl into the ambulance." The "attendant" was mailman driver H. M. Brady of the Jersey City post office. Another man who dropped his bag to give a hand. Back home in Farmer City, 111., there was a little mailman known as La Fayette Cox, who now is with the Coast and Geo detic Survey in the government. I was riding along bike-peddling papers while he was peddling mail afoot. I ran my friend down. And while running him down, I wound up" with a few hurts here and there. He helped me Into the house. That is another for Instance. Coxy and I have remained friends. But it Just goes to show you how long the human side of the post office has been going on. Unsound Reclamation Projects Scorned The Dalles (U.R) The As sociation of Western State Engi neers was told yesterday that unsound reclamation projects should be resisted. E. G. Nielsen, assistant com missioner for irrigation and pow er in the Bureau of Reclamation, told engineers that one sour project had more influence on the reclamation program than "anything we ean say about the successful ones ..." Nielsen also told engineers that federal agencies should con sider state laws and water pol icies in developing resources. The state engineers were winding up their three-day con vention today. WRONG WAY HOLE-IN-ONE Pittsburgh (U.R) Rip Max well, 16, scored a 250-yard hole in one at Longue Vue Country club Tuesday but it cost him two penalty strokes. His shot dropped into the 13th hole. He was shooting for the 15th. Problem Solved For New Engine Cleveland, O. (U.R) En gineers have solved a major problem which had stalled de velopment of an all-aluminum automobile engine. Engineers from the Alumin um Company of America and the metallizing Engineering Company tried srpaying the cy linder walls with a highly wear resistant coat of steel. The steel coating produced the desired effect. Forest Control Program Proposed Portland (U.R) A group of Oregon businessmen and college leaders here yesterday advocat ed congressional action to elim inate divided control of the For est Service and Bureau of Land Management over federal tim berlands. A new "federal forest corpora tion" was proposed. This would take over all timber sales, pri mary access road construction, maintenance and related activ ities now handled by the Forest Service on national forests, and by the BLM on the public do main and O&C timberlandsin western Oregon. A minority recommendation of the group favored the fed eral government gradually re turning productive forest land to private ownership. The recommendation was mde by the Business Executives' Re search committee, sponsored by Lewis and Clark and Reed col leges. The recommendation was among several others relating to forestry, in the second part of a study of Oregon's forest piwluils industry published yesterday. The group stated' that there was need for improvement in forest management by both pub lic and private interests. ELECTION TENSION .
