Wtdnttday. Scptambcr 19, 19S8 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE OPTIMISTIC Rassian pilots breakfast at Port Said, fcgypt, after their arrival to help Egypt navigate ships through the troubled Suez Canal. Fifteen have started training for the task and one told a newsman that they expect to master the complicated task in two days. On The Side By E. V. Durling (Distributed by King Fatnr Svndicjta, IncJ My portable typewriter plus case weighs Bi pounds. My suit case weighs 11 i pounds. I have another case for carrying shoes and miscellaneous articles that weighs two pounds. That makes 22 pounds in aU. Now for a trans atlantic air trip baggage allow ance of 66 pounds, I have 44 pounds left. I wonder how much my shoes weigh. No wisecracks, plea.se. I have to take along a dinner suit. Or do I? Maybe I could rent one over there. I know you can rent smart look ing formal attire in London. But how about Paris? Is there a spe cial small scale for weighing what you want to take on an air trip? I use a bathroom scale but it isn't practical. Not for me anyhow. Every time I weigh my baggage that way and think I am within the limit, I always get stuck for an excess baggage charge at the airport. Bridas Say, young fellow, how about that girl you're engaged to? Has she a diploma from a brides' school? Has she taken a course in infant care? The most com prehensive course in the country in infant care is that offered by the New York City hospital. It is a one year course and covers every angle of baby handling. Graduates get a degree of infant care technician. A diploma like that is a nice thing for a young woman to be able to display when her mother-in-law starts telling her how to take care of the new baby. Sidelights A slogan noteworthy for its effective brevity is the luxury line's "getting there is half the fun." . . .Chicagoan says he is campaigning for the elimination of cuffs on trousers. Says they are dirt carriers and germ car riers. Also that the cuffless trousers have "more class." Mud Hors The greatest mud-horse of all time was probably Blitzen, the "Iron Horse." which ran at the old Guttenberg track in New Jersey. They had winter racing at Guttenberg. Blitzen ran about three t i mes a week a nd won most of the time. He ran on mud dy tracks, snow covered tracks and icy tracks. It has been said much crooked racing took place at Guttenberg. However, the sharpers couldn't corrupt Blit zen. He was an honest horse. He always ran to win! So Thy Say- Aries (March 21-April 20) wives are efficient at keeping a household budget balanced. How ever, they are inclined to overde the thrifty angle, as for instance, buying cheap cuts of meat. Virgo (Aug. 24-Scpt. 23) females are very clever business women. Usually do very well when in business for themselves. A man married to a Sagittarian (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) can't go wrong in turning his pay check over to her. She will handle it skilfully. Is also a smart investor and clever at increasing the family fortune. Or so say the stargazers. Ministers' Daughters Ministers1 sons are alleged to be usually wild. How about min isters' daughters? Rudyard Kip ling intimated they were even wilder than the sons. Incidental ly. Lily Langtry, the "Jersey Lily," was a minister's daugh ter. Her father was the Rev. W. C. Le Breton of the Isle of Jersey. Mrs. Langtry's last legitimise stage appearance in New York was in 1903 in "Mrs. Deering's divorce." She sub sequently toured this country in vaudeville with Alfred Lunt as her leading man. Helpful Hints Some very helpful hints on achieving financial independence can be found in Russell Con well's classic work titled "Acres of Diamonds." And also, as previously mentioned, in the book titled "Self Help" by Sam uel Smiles. These are both out of print books but any smart bookseller will either have them or know where to get them. Hones and Women Why are so many young wo men in their 20s marrying men in their 40s or 50s? Have just heard of a beautiful 28-year-old blonde who broke her engage ment to a man of 30 and mar ried one 58 years old. Asked to explain the marrying of a man 30 year older than she is. the young woman said, 'I want to be dominated by a mature man who will be the boss in our marriage."
