Durling (Distribute1 by Kinfl Featuree Svedicat. Inc.) The financial returns from auccessful song writing have reached an all time high. A man can become wealthy from writ ing just a couple of hits. Not only that, the income from an outstanding song will last a life time. Wolfe Gilbert is still col lecting royalties from that live ly ditty titled "Waitin' for the Robert E. Lee." which he wrote over 40 years ago. A song is copyrighted for 28 years. The copyright can then be renewed for 28 more years making 5fi years of royalty collecting. That remarkable organization the Am erican Society of Composers. Au thors and Publishers (ASCAP) has done much to keep the song writers' royalties rolling in. Af ter a man has written one suc cessful published song he is eli gible for ASCAP membership. Lyrics In addition to mastering a mu sical instrument, the aspiring song writer should study poetry. Even to the extent of taking a course in poetry writing. Dor othy Fields, one of the most suc cessful of present day song writ ers, originally wrote magazine poetry. As you probably know, Dorothy wrote such song hits as "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby." "Exactly Like You," "Lovely To Look At" and "I'm in The Mood for Love." Irving Berlin was originally a poet. The idea of writing songs came to him later. Incidentally, those two perennially popular songs, "Jest A-W'earyin' for You" and "Mighty Lak' A Rose" were from poems by Frank L. Stanton. Carrie Jacobs Bond Just wrote the music for these two classics. Pleas Not In Great Britain there are over 1.000 amateur tobacco growers. They grow pipe tobacco in their backyards. I wonder how you grow tobacco suitable for cigar and stogie making. I may have to start growing tobacco in my hackyard, if the clients keep tak ing me for stogies the way they have been doing lately. Such is a query noted. That's a foolish question. There have been millions of hap py marriages in that age group. All exports on the subject seem agreed that 18 or 19 is the ideal age for a young woman to marry Also that she should marry a man somewhat older. Some ex perts say seven years older is about right. However, Aristotle said, "it is fitting for the wo men to be married at about the age of 18, and the men at 37, J or a little before." Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Pren Correspondent Hollywood (UP) On a courtroom set on a big movie stage a well-known San Fran cisco attorney literally is re living a chap ter from his past for the benefit of the home TV screens. George T. Davis, well known lawyer for Caryl 11 Aline Mot by Chessman, Alfred Krupp, Tom Monney and other headlined iic ures, is the "5tar" of this un usual drama. Warner Bros, is filming the story of one of his famous trials, the Kenneth Lone murder case in Martinez, Calif., for the studio's ABC-TV series, "Con flict," (to be telecast Nov. 13). On "Medic" actors in rubber gloves and with grim expressions portrayed doctors of the real life cases. But Warner Bros, made its story authentic by im porting Davis to play himself the first time a lawyer has re created his own case for TV or the movies. Now Davis is defending Long again, using exact "dialogue" taken from court records. Long thought he had killed his wife while he blacked out in a jealous rage. The case created a sensa tion when Attorney Davis fed the defendant sodium pentothal, or "Truth Serum.' Long then said he remembered seeing his wife's lover stab her to death. "I feel right at home in this courtroom," said Attorney Davis as he showed me around the set. "The studio sent a man to Mar tinez to duplicate that court. Even the actors look like their real life counterparts! To day I saw a man and wondered how they got McBride, the dis trict attorney. It turned out it was an actor portraying him." The studio bought the story eight years ago after the case ended, but could not stretch it into a full-length movie. When it was turned into a teleplay. Davis was asked to be technical adviser and portray himself. "I decided it would be fun," he said. "But more important, this case was an experience in the search for truth in court rooms and I wanted to see it treat qourseCf, right done correctly. So far I've caught them on many, many mistakes in coutroom procedure, such as having the attorney put his foot on the witness chair." In the story, as in real life, the defendant goes free but the lover never is prosecuted for the murder because of legal difficul ties. The motion picture code says a murderer cannot go un punished on the screen, but the studio anticipates no trouble from TV censors. New Storm Building Up Hurricane Force Miami UP.) A new tropi cal storm, 500 miles off the Flor ida coast, rapidly built up force today towards hurricane strength of 75 miles per hour. Storm Ethel, fifth tropical whirler of the season, posed no immediate threat to the U. S. mainland, the U. S. Weather Bur eau said. A hurricane hunter plane lo cated the storm's center over the Atlantic east of West Palm Beach. Fla., Wednesday midnight moving on a north-northeastward course toward the open sea. Ethel developed Wednesday among squalls churning for days about a low-pressure area in the Atlantic. A cold front moving down from Canada collided with warm air from the Carribean and started the vast circular movement of a full-scale storm. Gales fanned out for 125 miles as the squalls formed themselves into a turbulent ring around a calm center. They began a clockwise movement, picked up speed, and Ethel was born. At about the same time the season's fourth tropical distur bance, Dora, was blowing itself out in Mexico without ever reaching full hurricane strength. Its final thrust left 13 dead in Tuxpan, Mexico. The fiscal years of 38 states end on June 30.
