R.B He wants premarital re lations. Mrs. L.T.B. She should not see him any more. ... R.B. I have been seeing a young man of whom I am very fond and we have talked often about our future and marriage. He has me greatly troubled be cause he argues that we should have premarital relations to learn whether we are compatible. I believe him to be wholly sincere, and his arguments have a good deal of logic in them. He says there have been several divorces in his own circle be cause the man and wife disap pointed each other and became very unhappy and bitter toward each, other While his proposals make some sense, they also shock me. as I have been brought up with quite different ideas of morality. I worried about this by myself for some time and then I took my mother into my confidence. She insists that I must not see him ever again and warns me that he would abandon me if I ever once permitted any lib erties. I don't think I could ever agree to his proposals, but I find my mother's attitude quite im possible. I am sure that my france is no monster determined to abandon me after seducing me, and I am not willing to give him up. He certainly is making no effort to force me to do any thing, and he is neither impatient nor disagreeable when I refuse, but respects my way of think ing. He just thinks it is important that we make certain we can live together. ... Mrs. L.T.B. My daughter keeps reassuring me, but I can't understand why she should cling to temptation. She is young and naive, and can't understand how important it could be to the ego of a young man to pursue her and have his way, when he really has no other interest in her. I am afraid my daughter is courting disaster, and I do not know how to save her ... The Council: The risk that the mother fears is no doubt present in any such situation, but the mother could arm her daughter with a far better and more per suasive reason for remaining firm in her resolution. The best argument against pre marital relations ii the moral argument, not the argument of conservatism or caution or self- Interest. A premarital experiment In sex louid be disastrous to the marriage. Assuming that the ex perience were 'unsatisfactory. it would prevent, a marriage. But even if it led to a marriage, it would overemphasize sex and put the marriage on an extreme ly insecure basis. Sex is important in marriage. Employment Down In Mountain States San Francisco U.R) Wage and salary employment, exclud ing domestic and agricultural workers, in the eight mountain states declined slightly by 5.200 from June to a July total of 1, 591,000, the Department of La bor reported today. However, employment in the eight-state area was 47,900, or 3 per cent, higher than in July of last year. The mountain states include Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Mon tana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. The effects of the steel strike in manufacturing and mining, the customary summer employ ment drop in educational insti tutions, and the failure of con struction to show any gain over June were responsible for the loss. The effects of the strike were noted particularly in Colorado, where total employment de clined 6 -100, and in Utah, where it was down 3,000. Small sea sonal losses occurred in Arizona and New Mexico. Employment gains occurred in Montana up 7C0, Idaho up 1, 400, Wyoming up 1,600 and Nevada up 1.800. AH mountain states, except Wyoming which showed no change, shared in the increase of 47,900 over July of last year. DUFF City Manager MEDFORO (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THIRTEEN" Council but it is the experience of thece who have studied the problem that married people who are emotionally and spiritually grown-up can always manage to adjust themselves, even if they sometimes need counseling and help. It is also their experi ence that sex compatability is not always an enduring thing and can vanish in the early or later years of a marriage. An unsatisfactory first experi ence thus is no more a sure sign of permanent incompatability than a satisfactory first time would be a guarantee. Marriage simply must be based on much more than sex if it is to be en during and worthwhile. Premarital sex experiment has a destructive effect, and this is largely because it assumes that the sex act is the predominant value in the marriage. If the two young people are suited to each other by common ideals and aims, they will probably be sexually suited as well and need no experiments, since they will be able to understand each other and adjust themselves. This girl should not have to stop seeing the young man if she feels she loves him. Since he has tried to influence her with his half-baked idea, she should try to persuade him to her more moral and more practical view. Quite possibly, the superiority of the moral view has never been explained to him. (Copyright 1956.
