ATTEND MEETING Three members of the 9091st Air Reserve Group in Medford attended a liaison conference at Vancouver Barracks, Wash., Aug. 28-30, to review and coord inate Air Force reserve activi ties in Washington and Oregon. Attending were Capt. Donald P. Hemingway, M'Sgt. Alfred L. BUedave, and TSgt. Waller S. Kistner. Daughter Born Dr. and Mrs. John E. Bullock, former ly of Medford and now of Scio, Ore., are the parents of a daugh ter born Aug. 16. The child has been named Karen Sue. The Bullocks have two older chil dren. Chrissa, 4. and Peter. 2. One Cited Robert Lowndes Moss. Eagle Point, was cited Friday for having no operator's license and for following too close when his car collided with a vehicle operated by Tommy Edgar Thompson. Grass Fir Approximately one-half acre -of grass was de stroyed at 3:09 p.m. Friday, when a fire started in the center of a field near 1946 Stewart ave. The Medford fire department dis patched a rural pumper and later sent a smaller truck when the pumper was unable to get to the blaze. Cause of the fire was unknown. There was no other damage. Friday involving cars operated by George William Brewer, 727 South Central ave., and Le Phillip Reed. 331 South Ivy st., according to city police. Reed was cited for failure to yield right of way. Clubs Stolen Robert E. Bromly, 1225 Corona ave., report ed to city police Friday the theft of several golf clubs from the Rogue Valley Country club, on June 20. Police said clubs report ed missing were a five iron, six iron, seven iron, eight iron and a putter. Pair Arrested on Abortion Charges Long Beach, Calif. U.R Underworld figure Jimmy Utley, 55, and Leonard M. Aarons, 50, were arrested in a police raid Friday night on charges of con ducting a S500,000-a-year abor tion ring in a store building. The small store,, which had been converted into a miniature hospital, was raided by Homi cide Detective Lt. Herman Zan der, seven policemen and two po lice women. Zander said he ar rested the two suspects, ques tioned three young women in a waiting room and confiscated $100 worth of medical supplies. The women were not held. Police said Utley, an ex-convict, acted as doorkeeper, cash ier, nurse and general handyman while Aarons, who had lost his license to practice medicine in 1952, allegedly performed the operations. The two suspects carried on the two-man abortion ring with charges of $500 per patient, po lice said. Ashland, died Wednesday in a Portland hospital where he was taken last week by Mercy Flights. Funeral services will be con ducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the First Presbyterian church in Ashland. The Rev. B. J. Hol land of the First Presbyterian church will officiate. Interment will be held at the Mt. View cemetery. Lrtwhiller's Funeral home is in charge of arrange ments. Phillips was born May 4, 1900 at Roland, Manitoba, Canada. He made his home in Ashland in 1949. He has been active in the First Presbyterian church and was chairman of the board of trustees. Survivors Include his widow, Alice Armstrong Phillips; three sons, George and Marion of Long Beach, Calif., and Vernon of Ft. Lewis. Wash.; - step son, Frank Armstrong. Columbus. Ohio; his mother, Mrs. Margaret L. Phillips, a sister, Mrs. Mary Poole, both of Long Beach, Calif., another sister, Cora Chat win, and a brother, Basil Phil lips, both of Ashland. He is also survived by nine grandchildren. In lieu of flowers Mrs. Phil lips is requesting friends to con tribute to the bloodbank, or the fibrogene blood projects by sending their checks to Ed Grimm, president of the First Presbyterian church in Ashland. THOMAS E. SMITH Thomas E. Smith, 64, a resi dent of Central Point for the said the check was returned to Ellis when "no bona fide claim was made and proved." past 12 years, died at 212 Amy St., Friday. Mr. Smith was born at Arapa hoe, Neb., on Oct. 26, 1891. He was a veteran of World War I and servied with Battery E 45tb Artillery in the Coast Artillery Corps. He is survived by one son, Thomas Orval Smith of Wash ington; one daughter. Mrs. Edna May Martin of California; and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Mose. Cen tral Point, and Mrs. Laura Big ham, Eagle Point; one brother, Fred Smith, Table Rock, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Perl funeral home on Tu esday at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. D. E. Millard officiating. Interment will be in the Siskiyou Memorial Park. Five-Year-Old Lost, Succumbs To Fright Los Angeles UR An au topsy indicated Saturday that a five-year-old girl, whose body was found In a storm drain, probably was "frightened to death" after she wandered into the dark, underground tunnel to play and became lost. The child, Julee Ann Raine, was found dead 100 feet inside the storm drain Friday night after a search by more than 200 police officers and volunteers. She had been missing from her Sunday, September 1, 1956 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE WHS Bomb Scare Chases Oakland Employees Oakland, Calif. (U.R) A "dynamite bomb" planted in the foyer of the Oakland City' Hall caused the evacuation of 50 em ployees Saturday while 2000 curious passersby watched tensely from a distance but the bomb proved to be only an expertly-fashioned phoney. Meanwhile, across the bay near San Francisco's Hunters Point housing project, police home for several hours. At first it was feared that the child, daughter of Mrs. Betty Jean Raine. might have been the victim of criminal violence, but the autopsy revealed she died of natural causes. The tunnel in which the pretty, blonde-haired girl met her death was about eight feet in diameter. Officers said scratches found on the body probably were caused when the child fell sev eral times as she ran in terror through the dark storm drain. The victim's mother is a di vorcee with two other young children. found a highly explosive aerial bomb that turned out to be the real thing. A janitor. Nelson Davis, dis covered what appeared to be five sticks of dynamite, wrapped in red cellophane and connected by wires to a battery in the foyer of the building. Police immediately blocked off 14th street in front of the City Hall and put in quick phone calls to Police Chief Wy man W. Vernon and an Army demolition team from the San Francisco Presidio..
