COLTS MEET GLENDALE SUNDAY IN RV PLAY-OFF Medford Cheney Colts will play at Glendale at 2 p.m. Sun day in the first round of a four team play-off for the champion ship of the Rogue Valley Base ball circuit. Cave Junction downed Glen dale 6 to 4 Wednesday night in an extra game to decide the reg ular season championship. The Outlaws will be hosts to Grants Pass on Sunday in the other sea son end play-off game. Sunday winners will vie on Monday afternoon. Labor day, for the championship. There wUl be no game for third place. Cave Junction and Glendale were tied after last Sunday's final Ksmpf of the regular slate. Grants Pass was third in the standings and the Colt's fourth. Kay Keller To Pitch Kay Kelley is ticketed to pitch for the Colts on Sunday with Doy Gatlin doing the catching. How ard Morris, who catches and plays in the outfield, will not play Sunday. His marriage to Virginia Dew is Saturday night. The probable line-up includes Harvey Tonn, first base; Morrie Churchman, second base; Don LaBeau or Donn Johnson, third base; Frank Rector, shortstop, and Larry Bigham; Ed Reinking and Bob Serak, outfielders. Southern Oregon Timing as sociation officials are hoping for the return of the three previous too DarticiDants in speed con tests at the asociation's strips. Eliminator trophies were taken in the past meets by the autos of Skipper Walker. Jim Williams and Monte Wray and Lou Wolffe. The drags start at 1 p.m. Qual ifying runs begin at 10 a.m. and entries close at noon except for those cars which must come more than 150 miles for the races. Wray and Wolffe. Ashland, Shanty Will Try Again Detroit U.R) Shanty, cur rently the hottest boat afloat and winner of the International Harmsworth trophy p arlier this week, was among the speedsters turning out on the Detroit river today to take a short at qualify ing for berths in the 49th annual Gold Cup race. Seven berths still were open for tomorrow's Gold Cup classic as the contenders for the power boating prize lined up to take their turns at making the quali fying score of 85 miles an hour over the three-mile Detroit river course. Also scheduled to turn its three- qualifying laps was Miss U.S." II, winner of . this year's Silver cup. Shanty, owned by William Waggoner of Vernon, Tex., and driven by Air Force Lt. Col. Russell Schleeh, tried to qualify yesterday but the boat which set a new Harmsworth lap record of 110.337 mph on Monday pe tered out on the second lap and Schleeh guided it into the pits. had a 96-miles an hour time last week and their objective is to go over the 100 mph mark this time out in their 1932 Ford roadster. The last SOTA races put the car on the CW strip for the first time. Other Groups Expected Local car and motorcycle jockeys will make up a good share of the entries but groups are expected from Grants Pass. Klamath Falls and Redding and Crescent City, Calif. Armal Ow ens. Redding. Calif., at the last races had the top motorcycle time of 90 mph. Winners last week were from Merlin. Central Point. Medford. Crescent City and Grants Pass, as well as Ashland and Redding. There were 13 classes for autos and two for cycles. Trophies will go to winners in each class this week in addition to top eliminator cycle and auto. The SOTA welcomes specta tors to its races. - Angling Outlook Good at Fish, Willow Lakes Prospects are bright for good fishing at both Fish lake and Willow lake over Labor day. That is the report from the man agement of both resorts. Fishing is excellent at both lakes, it was reported yesterday. Catchea yesterday included a 22 inch five-pounder, hooked be fore 6 a.m. by Joe Spitzer, Pros pect. The rainbow trout was taken by trolling and weighed five pounds.. The lake levels are being dropped in order that work may be done on dams and spillways and the lowering of the water is a factor in making angling better, it was pointed out. Head -coach Fred Spiegelberg indicated that the group of grid candidates will be divided into about even contingents for the action. He plans a one-half hour tussle with no one player to see a great deal of action. Dick McLaughlin and Tony Brauner will start out as op posing quarterbacks. A considerable amount of teamwork was billed for the Tor nado today along with indi vidual drills. Dummy scrim mage is planned, in order to gain timing and precision in the Plays. Full Blast Grid candidates worked on team defense, had dummy scrim mage and went 10 minutes or so full blast in contact scrim mage yesterday afternoon. Morn ing drill saw -much work in individual groups. Soo, Vasquez In Ring Tiff Washington UJ.R) Unbeat en Jimmy Soo is cartain he will be lightweight champion some day, but the cold-hearted odds makers say it'i 8-5 that he'll be handed the first loss of his ca reer in tonight's nationally-televised bout against Bernabe (Baby) Vasquez. Soo is a 24-year-old Philadel phian who hasn't lost any of his 34 professional fights. His win ning string is the longest live one in pro boxing circles. Re tired heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano made Soo No. 1 when he gave up his title after 49 straight victories. Vasquez is only a year older but has much more experience.
