Stevenson 'Exhilirated' by New Mexico Meeting; Takes Caravan Into Northwest SanU Fe. N.M. U.R Adlai E. Stevenson, "exhilirated" by taiks with Democratic leaders here, today took his caravan of campaign trouble-shooters into the Pacific Northwest. The Stevenson plane left Santa Fe and landed for fuel 15 min utes later at Albuquerque. About 100 persons were on hand at the airport. The chartered DC7 took off for Portland. Ore., after a 40- minute stop. It was due in Port land about 11:35 a.m. (FbT). Stevenson told reporters at Al buquerque the Santa Fe meeting was "a great success" and "con firmed our confidence in a Dem ocratic victory." "Everyone shared the feeling of Sen; Kefauver and myself that we should carry our cam paign direct to the people," Ste venson said. A reporter noted that six of the seven states at the meeting went Republican in 1952. "We've had the impression there is a very sharp change in most of these states, Stevenson replied. A reporter asked: "What kind ot a change?" "Toward the Democrats, Natch," Stevenson said. Stevenson complimented New Mexico Democratic leaders. He said Gov. John Simms handled the meeting "admirably. "Certainly here is a political leader who should be encour aged," Stevenson said. "He has my confidence and admiration and I earnestly hope his excel- Do your CLOTHES FADE? Stevenson said he was "espe cially pleased" to receive the ap proval of the Democratic farm plank of New Mexico Sen. Clin ton Anderson. He said Anderson had tenta tively agreed to help him in ar ranging details of his coming campaign. Kefauver said he was impress ed by the "fine spirit of unity" and the confidence" expressed by delegates to the meeting. He said some delegates had supported Gov. Averell Harri man of New York for the presi dential nomination and some backed Sen. John Kennedy of Massachusetts for vice president, but "everybody was outspoken in their determination to do everything possible for the en tire ticket." Mollohan' (D.-W.Va.) to day ordered a staff investigation of reported rioting aboard an Immigration service "hell ship" deporting Mexican wetbacks. Mollohan. reached by United Press at Elkins, W.V., said he wants additional information on the "deplorable conditions" on board the Mexican flag vessel Mercurio before calling a full dress investigation by his House Government Operations subcom mittee. But he said a previous con gressional inquiry of the ship chartered by the U.S. govern ment to carry Mexican wetbacks from Port Isabel, Tex., to Vera Cruz, Mexico, revealed such poor safety and sanitary condi tions that the alleged rioting "was about what you would ex pect." The subcommittee said conditions aboard the Mercurio were like a penal Vhell ship." Sources in the Severison camp said one topic that wjould come up was the chances of two Democratic senators from the Northwest to win reellection Wayne Morse of Oregon and Warren Magnuson of Washing ton. Morse and Magnuson were named co-chairmen on the meet ing. Both senators face tough com petition in November fnom prom inent Republicans Gov. Arthur B. Langlie of Washingtcin against Magnuson, and former- Interior Secretary . Douglas McKay against Morse. '; A rugged day was in store for Stevenson and Kefauwer. After their Vancouver parley, is over, they will take off tonight for another session WedntEday at Sioux City. Iowa, a total of 2,600 miles of flying in 18 hours. Stevenson, sunburnet and on Mexican spokesman admitted thci ship made an unscheduled sllop at Tampico, Mexico, and that ru mors had reached here oi! riot ing by some 500 Mexicans on board. But he said a Mexican otlficial telephoned the service that the Mercurio put into Tampico be cause one of the passengeits re quired emergency medical ireat ment. Capt. Luis G. SeviUa, chief of the port facilities at Tampico, was quoted by the spokesman as saying that "30 or 40" Mexicans jumped off the ship when she docked. But he said the Mexi can official reported none of the passengers drowned "to his knowledge." Reports reaching here de scribed rioting over poor liv Ing conditions as the reason ''.he Mercurio put in at Tampito. Thirty-six passengers were re ported to have leaped overboard when the ship docked and four of them drowned. looking tired after a busy day told reporters when the Santa Fe meeting broke up Monday the talks were "even more satisfac tory than I thought possible." Stevenson said he received "state-by-state assurances of vic tory" and the "enthusiasm and spirif'-displayed by Democratic leaders of seven states who at tended "exhilirated me." Asked by reporters whether he would attack President Eisen hower directly in the campaign, he Said "I hope I shan't attack him at all." Instead, he said, he would concentrate on the Presi dent's conduct of his office and his "failure of leadership." House Speaker Sam Rayburn (D-Tex.) told the meeting, how ever, that he believed Mr. Eisen hower "should not be spared." Rayburn said when the Presi dent's cabinet is "criticized for its shortcomings, it's the whole administration, and Mr. Eisen hower is the head of it." on Report 'Hell Ship' Deputy Attorney General William P. Rogers defended con ditions aboard the Mercurio only last week. He said U.S. and Mexican officials on board ate the same food as the border jumpers. Mollohan's investigators have charged that about 500 Mexi cans jammed aboard the Mer curio. The investigators said the ships is an old World War II corvette that normally carries about 70 to 90 passengers. They said the ship has only two lifeboats with a total ca pacity of 48 persons, does not have enough life jackets and the passengers are crowded under filthy living conditions that in clude no sleeping facilities ex cept the open deck. Rogers said the ship was the most efficient method of pre venting "repeaters" from re turning illegally to this coun try. He said by transporting them deep into Mexico, it dis couraged them from returning. .Our alone In iwmd . $K)p Into a cocoon of delicious luxury; handsome unsurpassed . . .
