Medford Tribune Unit.d Press Full Leased Wira United Press Full Leased Win Second Section MEDFORD, OREGON, MONDAY, AUGUST 27, 1956 Pages 1-6 Boeing Top Defense Contractor; Shows Growing Military Emphasis Washington (U.R) Boeing Airplane Co., maker of the B-52 hydrogen bomber, wai the top defense contractor in 1955, re flecting the administration's growing military emphasis on air-atomic power. The Defense Department, in a rundown of the top 100 de fense contractors in 1955, an nounced that Boeing contracts for 1955 totalled $792,000,000. The huge General Motors Corp., a top defense producer in the past, ranked 14th on the 1955 listing. But General Mo tors continued as the overall number one defense contractor In the period following the out break of the Korean war in July, 1950, with $6,821,100,000 in de fense contracts in the S'i year span. Ford Placet Seventh In 1955 General Motors was outranked by it? chief mpeti tor. Ford Motor Co., which, with large contracts for jet engines, placed seventh with $472, 000.000. Publication of the list showed how the administration's "new look" military strategy has established aviation and missile firms as top peacetime defense producers. Of the top 10 producers seven were aircraft companies. The other three were major pro ducers of aircraft parts, missiles and electronic equipment. North American Aviation, Inc., Los Angeles, manufacturer of supersonic fighters and guided missiles, was a close second to Boeing on the list with contracts totalling $790,900,000. With the air-atomic strategy in the ascendancy, aircraft and missile firms accounted for 34.9 per cent of $15,286,600,000 in military contracts placed with all firms in 1955. That compar ed with 27.1 per cent during the three-year Korean war period. Boeing and North American alone took 10.4 per cent last year. While companies with aircraft and missiles as their primary interest received more than a third of last year's contracts the list contained very few firms that do hot have an interest in some phase of aviation such as engines, oil and jet fuel, elec tronics, instruments. Immediately after reporting the latest burglary to police, Smith ordered a new safe. strategy the list further docu mented the current trend to ward business mergers. The 100 top firms for 1955 had 204 sub sidiary companies. The 100 top companies three years ago had 140 subsidiaries. The list is prepared periodi cally at Congress' request. It deals only with prime contracts and thus gave no Indication of the thousands of other com panies which receive sub-contracts from the top 100. The air craft industry alone says it deals with 60,000 suppliers. Others in Top Ten In addition to Boeing and North American, the other com panies in the top 10 and some of their major products were: General Dynamics Corp., pro ducer of jet fighters, supersonic bombers, missiles,- electronics equipment and atomic subma rines, $781,700,000. United Aircraft Corp., jet and piston engines and helicopters, $587,400,000. General Electric Co., jet en gines and other equipment, $570,200,000. American Telephone & Tele graph Co. and subsidiaries, con tinental air defense systems and other equipment, $50,300,000. Ford Motor Co., jet engines, $472,200,000. Lockheed Aircraft Corp., fighter planes, transports, mis siles, $412,700,000. Curtiss-Wright Corp., jet and piston engines, electronics, $354, 700,000. Douglas Aircraft Co., trans ports, warplanes, missiles, $291,-100,000. New Insecticides Kill Fish and Wildlife Harlingen, Tex. (U.R) New insecticides being used effective ly to kill boll weevils are even more deadly to fish and wild life, Rio Grande sportsmen have been warned. William H. Brown, assistant chief aquatic biologist for the Texas Game and Fish Depart ment said spraying of crops in the lower Rio Grande Valley has taken a heavy toll of fish. "One of the new insecticides is so deadly that one ounce in 75,000 gallons of water will kill every fish," Brown told the Val ley Sportsmen's Club board of directors. He said efforts were being made to prevent further such mishaps. He said most farmers were cooperative when inform ed of the danger and cited the case of one grower who ordered his aerial duster to cut off the insecticide 40 rows from banks of lakes and canals. Minimum Standards For Auto Seat Belts Olympie, Wash (U.R) T-The State Commission on Equipment has fixed minimum standards for motor vehicle seat belts and served notice that dealers who sell non-regulation belts can be charged with a misdemeanor. Belts must be at least 1 inches in width and have a ten sile strength per occupant of 1,500 pounds. The design of the.buckle must incorporate a quick-o p e n i n g mechanism and the belt must be installed rigidly enough to with stand a sudden thrust. By MAUREEN O'SULLIVAN Written for the United Press Hollywood (U.R) The question 1 am asked most fre quently is how I am able to suc cessfully combine my married life which includes bringing up seven youngsters with a continuing career as an actress. This does not take a super human effort or an exceptional perosnality. It takes just a great deal of good common sense and an adult viewpoint shared by both husband and wife. Understanding It first is necessary to have a husband who does not consider it a blow to his pride that his wife has interests aside from her home life. Second, it is important that the career of the' wife does not overshadow her husband's career. When this happens, watch out, the marital walls can tumble down very easily. I most certainly do not rec ommend a career for a woman who has very small children. I abandoned my career for some years until I was certain my youngsters had matured enough. Movie and TV work takes you away from your home for days A a time. For instance, I'm now working on location at Lone Pine, Calif., in a picture for Co lumbia Studio, "The Captives." I would have turned down the part a few years ago. The chil dren were much too young. Proper Balance I frankly admit that a career woman who spends eight hours a day away from home through out the year has many more dif ficulties in keeping a proper balance. In my .case, compara tively little time is taken from my roleL as Mrs. John Farrow. An occasional TV show or a mo vie role during a year is suf ficient for me. I was an actress before I married and work be fore the cameras will always have a fascination for me. For tunately, my husband under stands this as he is a director and works with actors. Last, but not least, it's essen tial that the actual business of running a Jiome is not impaired when I leave for a film or TV role. I worked out a well-organized system which is put into high gear when I go off to the sound itagea. This take a great deal of effort. The butcher, the baker and the host of other peo ple I deal with in order to run a well-organized home are dealt with well in advance. I keep my accounts in order. Thus my household does not suffer.
