From where we are domiciled for the summer I took the good old Jersey Central into New York. Although a commuter of much past experience, I am out of : training. Have been using the high speed auto highways. So I thought I might find the train trip a little rugged. I didn't. I enjoyed it immensely. First Slop ' ' The first stop was at Little Silver, N.J. That is where "Dia mond Jim" Brady and Lillian Russell disembarked to go to the Monmouth race track. Jim and Lillian had a lot in com mon. They both loved racing. Incidentally. Jim owned that great handicap horse named Gold Heels. For Gold Heels 132 pounds was just a feather. Lil lian was a great horseplayer. She bet a thousand dollars a race. Both Jim and Lillian were very fond of food. After the races they dined in Long Branch. Lillian could eat right long with "Diamond Jim." No diet for her. At the time of which I speak, Lillian weighed 165 pounds but she was still re ferred to as "The American Beauty." Aaldno, . .i Queries from clients, . Q ..So you say there should be no to matoes In New England clam chowder. What do you, a Brooklynite, know about it? A. I spent eight years In New Eng land in Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut and New Hamp shire. I know plenty about New England clam chowder. Get it right No tomatoes! Streamlining Joan Crawford, still very well streamlined, continues to main tain that she scrubs floors as an aid to the preservation of her youthful figure. Call this to the attention of your wife if she has been concerned about her ap pearance in a bathing suit this summer. Incidentally, I am constantly asked to settle argu ments as to Miss 'Crawford's age. I don't know what it is However, I understand Joan made her entertainment debut as a dancer Iri Chicago in 1922 in a revue titled "Innocent Eyes." which was produced by Ernie Young. Please Not , What is the oldest newspaper in the United States? How about the Newport, R. I., Mercury, es tablished in 1758, just about 200 years ago? This newspaper was founded by John Franklin, elder brother of Ben. Lively Town The train paused at Red Bank. That is one of the few places in this country where ice boat races can really travel. They have achieved a speed as high as- 144 miles an hour. The Schrewbury river at Red Bank is also a great motor boat racing center. Guy Lombardo, the bandmaster, a real speed boy in a motor boat, won many races there. Near Red Bank is Wood land farm owned by Amory Hoskeft. This farm is so large that it is possible to hold an an nual race meeting there of flat, hurdle and steeplechase events. And it is only 45 minutes from Broadway. Memories The trip ended by ferry from Jersey City to donwntown Man hattan. I really enjoyed that. Riding on New York harbor awakens many pleasant mem ories for me. One is that, as a kid, I had a pal whose father was a cook on a tugboat. On Fire Covers 8 Acres In Umatilla Forest Pendleton flJ.R) A forest fire covering more than eight acres has been reported in the Umatilla national forest in the Kiah district at the north fork of the John Day river about 75 miles south of here. A light plane dropped fire fighting equipment and supplies to a ground parly of 15 men Sat urday. The fire started Friday from a lightning strike, but was not believed to be serious at the time. Late Friday rising winds spread it over the eight acres. The forest service ground party was on the fire line all night. A scouting plane continued to fly over the Ukiah district this morning to spot other possible outbreaks. Two small fires were reported in the Dale district of the Uma tilla forest Friday, but have been brought under control. Officials Tell Changes In Social Security (Editor's Note: The follow. Ing is en of a sri of ar ticles prepared by th -Social Security Administration des cribing the important changes in the Social Security, law enacted by Congress this year. According to the local Social Security office, they will af fect more than 600 women in Jackson and Josephine coun ties, some 200 or 300 disabled persons, and an unknown but considerable number of law yers, dentists and other pro fessional peopl as well as farmers.) many Saturdays We would spend the day on this boat. We really covered the harbor and the waterfront. Then, of course, as my pal's father was the cook, we dined very well. Some fun! Horses and Women What rates as the most ridic ulous feminine style of the 20th century? My nomination is the so called "hobble skirt." Now it is reported that style is going to be revived. If you don't know what a hobble skirt is, ask your grandma to draw you a picture of one. If the hobble skirt achieves current popularity, I am definitely going to give up trying to understand women and devote my time to trying to understand horses. Important changes were made in the old-age and survivors in surance program as a result of Social Security Amendments which President Eisenhower signed into law on Aug. 1. Summary Given Here is a summary of the three most important changes: (1) In September, benefits will become payable to women when they reach age 62. Survivors benefits for widows and, in certain cases, mothers of deceased workers will start with a payment for November which will be received early in Decem ber. The amount of the monthly payment will be the same that they would have started getting at age 65 under the old law. And in November, retired in sured women workers and wives of retired insured workers can start getting benefit payments at age 62. The amount will be somewhat less than would have been payable at age 65 under the old law. Disability Provision (2) A change has also been made in the total disability pro vision. While the "disability Ireeze provision which pro tects the social security insur ance rights of workers is con tinued, monthly cash benefit payments, beginning with July, 1957, will be made to totally disabled workers when they reach age 50. Beginning with January 1957 monthly benefits will be payable to s disabled un married child, even after the child has reached age 18, if the child was disabled since before he reached 18 and is the depend ent child of a retired or deceased parent, step-parent, or adopting parent who is eligible for old age insurance benefits under so cial security, or was insured for the purpose of survivors bene fits at the time of his or her death. (3) Other important changes in the law affect Iarmers. both employed and self-employed and professional men. While there have been no changes in farm ers' old-age and survivors insur ance benefit rates, but there are changes in the way benefits can be figured and the time neces sary to become insured for pay ments. ' New Groups Corered Newly-covered groups ire lawyers, dentists, chiropractors, veterinarians, naturopaths, os teopaths, and optometrists. Oth er recent legislation provides for the extension of social se curity on a permanent contribu tory basis after 1956 to mem bers of the armed services on active duty. Some of the changes are ret roactive to the beginning of 1956, others will become effec tive next November: still others will go into effect Jan. 1, 1957; and one becomes effective July 1, 1957. Growers May Apply For Rebate on Lime Jackson county growers whose soil tests indicate a need for lime to correct soil acidity may apply under the A-4 conserva tion program and secure a 50 per cent rebate on the cost of lime, cost of lime delivery and cost of application, according to W. B. Tucker, county agricul ture agent. Tucker said this service ap plies to any legume, alfalfa, clover, vetch or lotus, which is needed and producing in 1956-57. Since 60 per cent of soil sam ples so far tested in Jackson county show need of one-half to two tons of lime per acre. many farmers would profit by taking advantage of the service, he said. : Interior Secretary, GOP Candidates, Due Here Next Thursday Marilyn Monroe Fire's Her Cook and Butler .
