Women who live in the community of Butte Falli, like those of other towns in Jackson county, belong to churches, garden clubs, PTAs and do other civic work. One of Butte Falls' best known gardners is Mrs. Elga Abbott, who has a green house and wild flower garden as well as growing the usual plants and shrubs. Fuchsias are one of her specialties, and she is pictured here with two varieties, June bride and Marinka, the latter in the hanging basket. Mrs. Abbott supplies her friends and neighbors with cuttings ond starts of plants. y$$z tt TWnnwJ IWlsm Tuesday afternoon members of Butte Falls Garaen club combined a tour of members' gardens with posing for pictures. Shown here are (left to right) Mrs. Elmer Leatherman, treasurer; Mrs. B. T. Fredenberg, Mrs. Frank Carson, who has moved from Butte Falls to Medford but still serves as the club president; Mrs. Robert Edmondson, in whose garden the picture was taken; Mrs. Brittain Ash, who lives in Butte Falls but serves as teacher and dean of girls at Crater High school during the school year, and Mrs. Clyde Moore. Mrs. Edmondson's garden is laid out under large oak and evergreen trees and is filled with a gorgeous array of blooms from fuchsias, begonias, geraniums and other summer plants. Arnold is postmistress of Butte Falls but also finds time to work in the garden club, in the Community church and to attend meetings of Butte Falls Extension unit. She is a past president of the garden club and is the publicity chairman. , The Arnolds, who moved to Butte Falls in 1949 from Medford, have a daughter, Mrs. Paul Greer, at 1629 Kings highway, and two sons, James Ed win in San Pablo, Calif., and Howard, graduate of Oregon Technical institute now working in Pendleton, Ore. I - v"V'vi, r ' 4 f v si , ! 1 I -Mr 4 Jti i i r . i -5-r ?i " i y i The home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Green in Butte Falls is especially interesting for it is filled with treasures sent home by their daughter, Mrs. Robert B. Pechner. Mr. Pechner is an engineer with Morrison-Knudsen and the couple has lived in many different countries. Mrs. Green holds a huge copper tray carved with Arabic lettering and designs, and the wall, hanging, partly shown, is a large hand-made embroidered piece from Afghanistan. The Pechners have sent art objects from Ankara, and are now beginning to send objects home from Basrah, Iraq, their latest assignment. Mrs. Green works in Butte Falls Garden ' ' club, the home extension unit and other organizations of the community. MEDFOW)-SisTRIBUNE SUNDAY, AUGUST 26, 1956 In Butte Falls 4 -'i . - Mrs. N. B. Stoddard is a long-time resident of Butte Falls. She served as postmistress for 27 years, but has now retired. The Stoddard's home is located on a hillside with a fine view of the forested slopes of the river canyon and Mt. Pitt; 30 years ago the couple could see the falls for which the town is named but the tall trees now hide the view. Mrs. Stoddard belongs to the garden club, and has many colorful an nuals in bloom. lifer ' r Mrs. Everett Moore is pictured here on the steps of the Moore's home . located at the fish hatchery, Mr. Moore being superintendent of the hatchery which is operated by the Oregon State Game commission. Mrs. Moore's garden is filled with bright blooming annuals with the evergreen trees as a back ground, and the porch boxes are filled with petunias with masses of blossoms. The Moores, who have lived in Butte Falls since 1926, belong to Butte Falls Grange and she is a past president of Butte Falls Home Economics club. The Moores have a son, Gordon, who makes his home in Sacramento, Calif. . f -TAi y : . - .HI x$J 1 1,111 .," U Lost Tuesday's meeting. of Butte Falls Garden club was held in the home of Mrs. Clay Conley, and Mrs. Conley is shown (at right), serving refreshments. Mrs. William Edmondson (seated at left) is secretary of the club and Mrs. F. M. Kincaid is hospital chairman for the organization. All three women are charter members of the club, and also give their time and effort to church and civic projects of the community. A business session and garden tour had been planned by the organization but due to the invasion of the reporter-photog-raphw team, the proposed session ended in happy confusion. Mrs. Louis Machlan is the wife of the super intendent of Butte Falls schools. The Mpchl.ans, who have lived in the town about a year, came to Oregon from New York City by way of Cali fornia and have a son. Dr. Louis O. Machlan Jr., living in Portland, Ore. Mrs. Machlan devotes her spare time from assisting her husband and her homemaking duties by working in Butte Falls Parent-Teacher association, and the auxiliary " to Butte Foils Lions club. ' 1 1 ' Mrs. Horry Dolton (at left) and Mrs. Carrie Poole are two of the town's most interesting residents. Mrs. Dalton is vice president of the garden club, : president of the PTA, a member of the school board, Butte Falls Extension unit and the Community church. Mrs. Poole, a senior citizen, is 83 years old ond has spent most of the past 80 years living in the Butte Falls area. Born in Mis souri, she crossed the plains in a covered wagon with her parents in pioneer days and says she just couldn't bring herself to live in any place other than ' bar beloved Butte Fall.
