Stassen Capitulation Said 'Shocking' Case Of GOP Brainwashing Harrisburg, Pa. (U.P.) Gov George M. Leader has termed Harold E. Stassen's last minute support of Vice President Rich ard M. Nixon a "shocking" case of Republican "brainwashing The Democratic governor termed the former Minnesota governor "probably the most Two Tornadoes In Illinois Hurt At Least Four By UNITED PRESS A mass of cooler air pushed southward from Canada over the north-central portion of the country today following torna does which smashed into two Illinois towns. The cooler air covered the Great Lakes region and extend ed southwestward to Missouri and west to the Dakotas. Rains Curb-Deep Weathermen said tornadoes which struck the Chicago sub urbs of Tinley Park and Monee, 111., were spawned by the cool front which also triggered heavy rains which was curb-deep in downtown Chicago streets. At least four persons were in jured by the twisters, all at Tin "ley Park where at least 15 homes were wrecked. Nine home were totally destroyed while other homes were not fit tot living. Red Cross disaster crews rushed to the town short ly after the tornado struck. Driver Rides Hurtling Truck The other tornado struck far ther south at Monee, ramming into a truck weighing station at the outskirts of the town. Heavy vehicles were spun into the air. One driver rode out the twister in his cab while his truck spun in the air 30 feet off the ground, police said. He was not hurt. On the New Jersey turnpike, heavy fog was blamed for two chain-reaction crashes that kill ed at least one person and in jured about 30 others. Thirteen cars were wrecked or damaged. Rain and cooler air also push ed over Washington and Oregon, causing temperature drops of approximately seven degrees. Meanwhile, a warming trend continued in the eastern portion of the country from Arkansas and Louisiana eastward to the Atlantic coast and northeast ward through the Ohio valley and the North Atlantic coast states. pathetic figure in the Republi can party. "Probably the most shocking thing to come out of the Repub lican Convention at San Fran cisco was the tremendous brain- wishing job on a slightly worn out Republican liberal, Harold Stassen," Leader said. "He gave all the appearance of some of the witnesses at the Moscow trials. We don't how ever, think he was drugged,' Leader said. The governor said Stassen had invoked the full wrath of the GOP by "trying to prove to himself that all that business about the Republican Conven tion being open was to be taken seriously. "But," Leader said, "if there was any doubt about it, they dispelled it when they gave Terry Carpenter the bum's rush." He also said that he plans to make Joe Smith, the mythical candidate Nebraskan Terry Car penter strove to nominate, an issue in the Pennsylvania cam paign. He said that in Joe Smith the Republicans had "inadvert ently" given the Democrats a peg on which to hang the Demo cratic charge that the GOP is the party of the favored few. Coos Bay Man Held For State Officers Jack Norman Grove, 40, Coos Bay, is being held in the city jail for state police at Roseburg. He is wanted in Roseburg on a burglary charge. Grove was arrested for va grancy at 7 p.m., Aug. 22, in Medford and his description was sent to Roseburg by teletype. City police were subsequently requested to hold him for state officers. Three People Hurt In Four Accidents Three people were injured land General hospital by a pass- and one driver was cited by state police in four separate car accidents occurring in Jackson county yesterday and this morn ing, state police reported. Hospitalized, but not seriously injured, were Mrs. Richard Traylor, route 2, box 376-G, Medford; Phillip LeRoy Miller, 20, Portland; and Mary Jane Pennington, 35, Ashland. Gets Citation Cited for failure to signal was Elizabeth Haddon McGalliard, 54, of 731 West Jackson St., Medford. State police said Mrs. Traylor received a chipped right hip bone when she was struck by a car operated by her husband. According to the report, Traylor was preparing to drive the vehi cle into the garage at their resi dence on Merriman rd., when his foot slipped off the brake. The car struck Mrs. Traylor, who was standing a short dis tance in front of the car. She was taken to Sacred Heart hos pital by Medford Ambulance service. The accident occurred at 9:45 p.m. Thursday. Miller sustained bruises after the car he was operating went over a bank about 2V4 miles south of Ashland on Highway 99 at 12:12 a.m. today. Officers said he was traveling north about 55 miles per hour, when his car moved to the east shoulder of the road and pro ceeded about 250 feet before the right wheels went over the bank. Miller apparently turned the steering wheel sharply to the left and the rear of the car swung north. The car then skid ded sideways into the south bound lane and went over the bank. Officers said the car rolled over and came to rest on its wheels about 18 feet from the highway. Damage to the car was exten sive. Miller was taken to Asn- ing motorist. Mrs. Pennington received mi nor cuts and bruises when her car went over a bank about one- fourth mile south of Ashland on Highway 99. Car Rolls Over According to state police, she was northbound on the highway when she pulled to the east side of the road. As she was watching a car behind her through the rear view mirror, her car moved over to the east shoulder of the road and proceeded along the shoulder about 30 feet before going over the- bank. The car came to rest on its top facing north about 12 feet from the highway. Mrs. Pennington was taken to Ashland General hospital by passing motorist. The accident occurred at 3:30 a.m. today. Cars Collide Mrs. McGalliard was cited by officers after the car she was driving collided with another vehicle, operated by Cecil Sam uel Carter, 56, Camp White, about VA miles north of the Cascade Gorge store on High. way 62. The accident occurred at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. State police said Mrs. McGal liard was traveling south on the highway and apparently passed a driveway into which she had intended to turn. Officers said she turned into another drive way and slowly returned in a northerly direction. As Carter's vehicle started to pass her car, Mrs. McGalliard made a left turn. Carter's car struck Mrs. McGalliard's vehi cle, damaging it on the left side. There were no injuries, state po lice said. Fridar. August U. 1156 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FTVZ Cost of Living Sets New Record Washington (U.R) The cost of living jumped to a new record high for the second straight month in July, the government announced today. The rise means pay hikes rang ing from three to five cents an hour for 1,250,000 auto, aircraft and farm equipment workers. The Labor Department's Bu reau of Labor Statistics reported that the consumer price index rose by seven-tenths of 1 per cent between June and July. This boosted it to 117 per cent of average 1947-49 prices. The bureau said food prices The most reliable small car in the world "The Amazing Volkswagon" MORSE ivf r.Tr.D c fFffS. 1T1V M. Stevenson was learning today that a film actor's life isn't a bed of roses. The Democratic presidential nominee spent his second day be fore cameras, filming political talks for use on television this fall. His managers met a schedule of two three-minute films a day, covering various issues. But the cameramen completed only one film, on education, in their first day of shooting Thursday. "This takes interminably long," Stevenson remarked to reporters outside his country home late Thursday. "This is the first time it ever occurred to me that maybe these fellows in Hollywood really do have to work," he said. From 10 to 15 short films will be made, some at his farm and some later at other sites. They will be used on TV spots already purchased for the candidate. Stevenson watched television at his home Thursday night while his election opponent. President Eisenhower, delivered his accept ance speech to the Republican National Convention at San Fran cisco. Aides said Stevenson had no immediate comment.
