The ma chint ace is taking something away from Mother Nature par ticularly in the business of grass growing. There is an outfit in Dallas. Tav which US nas com up with an auto matic gim mick that growi grass. Being mower of lawns of long standing and fine reputa- Rirnui Nichols UUII, 1 think I'll run along with the new contraption. It's too dum fast with its growing, even though the production up to now la limited to pastures things like that could spread. This thing was invented by a Belgian and it is claimed it can take a seed of grain and grow it into a blade of grass six to iVi inches high in a little over a week. If you can multiply one grass seed into a yardfull of blades what a problem a mower would have on his hands! He d have to quit his job and do noth ing but push a grass cutter. Good for Paitum Actually, what the inventor had in mind wag improving pas ture land. That might be fine for cows, but for th lawn I don't see it. It's bad enough to have to run along behind a mower once a week or so. It would be worse to have to attack the growth with a scythe before mowing. The machine, or unit, works like this: There is a metal framed box with seven drawers. Top drawer holds water which is mixed with a special chemical formula. This sifts down by fil tration into the other drawers, which are populated by six or seven pounds of seed. Temperature control, import . ant in the growing of grass, pas ture or lawn, is achieved through automatic control of electric heating units. A special control unit regulates the flow of elec tricity. So the temperature thus is controlled. Different seeds need different temperature. During the operation, the seeds and growing shoots auto matically are irrigated each day with a solution containing dis solved nutrients. That does away with the need for something else Mother Nature invented the good earth. Mother Nature Needed But the scientists can't do away with old Mom Nature alto gether. The seed has toe plant ed in the soil. A single, seven-drawer ma chine, it is said, can produce forage enough to keep 10 head of cattle contented. Or, 30 pounds of pregerminated seed can produce 300 to 360 pounds of man-made grass. Other things than grass could be spawned in the machine. .Things like oats, wheat and bar- 1 1 1 1 l,n.,... ...1,.,, icjf auu ilea veil aiiuwb wiioi else. Over 10,000 of the machines already are in use in Europe and American farmers, it is re ported, are looking around their acreage and wondering if higher grass wouldn't produce better beef faster. Maybe the invention i a good idea. But please let's keep it on the farm. Us city folks don't have all day to cut grass. Stevenson Schedules Knoxviile Conference Knoxville. Tenn. fU.R Bill Brawley, assistant to Adlai Ste venson's campaign manager. James Finnegan, arrived here today to make final plans for next Thursday's presidential campaign strategy conference. Stevenson and his vice-presidential running mate, Sen Estes Kefauver (D-Tenn.) are to arrive here at noon Thursday from Sioux City. Iowa, and leave that night for Chicago. Also scheduled to arrive here today was Miss Annabelle Cle ment, sister of Gov. Frank Cle ment. She will assist in planning the conference. Adlai Said Undisputed Democratic Leader Portland (U.R) State Repre sentative Alfred H. Corbett told the American Veterans Commit tee yesterday that "Adlai Ste venson came out of the Demo cratic convention the undisputed leader of the Democratic party." Corbett, who was vice chair man of the Oregon Democratic delegation at the convention and is now cochairman of the Oregon Stevenson committee, praised the "courage and wisdom" of Stevenson in throwing the choice of vice president open for the free choire of the delegates. "The free choice of Estes Kefauver was a welcome breath of fresh air, compared to the rubber stamp operation in San Francisco," Corbett said. It is repeatedly said that wrrteri of certain songs which became very popular borrowed the music of same from Chopin without credit. One such song is said to have exactly the same tune as Chopin's "Fantasia." Another is said to be identical with the same composer's "Polo naise." Have some pianist play these works of Chopin for you and see if they remind you of any popular songs. Mothers Vivien Leigh, aged 42, lost her expected baby. It is not unusual in Britain for women of 42 or over to become mothers. Last year in England and Wales over 10,000 women of 42 or over gave birth to healthy infants. And all these mothers survived. One was Mrs. Eileen Sullivan of London, who gave birth to her first aby at 46, after 25 years of marriage. Incidentally, in 1882, an Edin burgh, Scotland, woman gave birth to her 24th baby when she was 63!
