Wednesday, August 22. 195S MEDFORD (OTHEGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREB Egypt Hints Action Against British, French Ships if Suez Waterway Blocked London u.R) Egypt hint ed today it would take action against British and French ships in the Suez Canal zone if French and British pilots resign or "leign sickness" in order to dis rupt navigation on the 'water way. Dispatches from Cairo made it clear the Suez crisis was far from ended despite the Suez con ference's overwhelming support for Secretary of State John Fos ter Dulle s plan for international operation of the canal. Dulles met today with British Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd and French Foreign Minister Christian Pineau and planned moves to confront Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Xasser with the Dulles plan. They hop ed to select a committee to ask Nasser if he were prepared to negotiate on basis of the West ern plan. Dulles also paid a surprise visit to Prime Minister Anthony Eden at 10 Downing St. ' Cairo reports indicated Nasser would refuse. If he does, the West would face once again the crucial decision of whether to use force against Egypt. The Western Big Three, In winning overwhelming approval of the Dulles plan, split the Afro Asian bloc and lined up 17 of the 22 nations at the London conference.. Today they sought to name a committee to bring the majority decision before Nas ser. Mamie Hits Back Australian Prime Minister. Teacher Federation Rejects Move To Lift Charters for Segregation Pittsburgh U.P The Amer ican Federation of Teachers, in a stormy convention session Tuesday night, rejected a mo tion to revoke the charters of eight segregated Southern lo cals. Th ouster move received ma jority support but failed to get the two-thirds vote required by the union's national constitu tion. The ballot was 628 for ouster, 449 against, the support of 718 delegates was required. Would Recall Charters ' The rejected proposal would have called the charters of "'all White'" and "all Negro" chap ters in three states and estab lished procedures for organiz ing integrated Iocs Is. Mrs. Veronica Hill of New Orleans, chairman of the Execu tive Council for Integration of Southern Locals, introduced a minority report which called for the ouster. The report quoted from the AFT constitution: "No charter of an AFT local which defines or recognizes jur isdiction on the basis of race or color or permits the practice of such jurisdiction shall be recog nized as valid, and the practice of any local in limiting its mem bership on account of race or color shall render its charter void." Motion Opposed Willard Millsaps, a Chatta nooga high school teacher, op posed the motion declaring it would make "ineffectual Southern locals. "If I make application to join an integrated local and am ac cepted, I would immediately be labeled as a teacher who advo cated integration in our public schools," he said "I have to live with those folks down there and I intend to Convention of Hoboes Turns Iowa Air Blue Britt. Iowa (U.R) The hoboes of America held their a'nnual convention Tuesday and put on a fight that put the Republicans' and Democrats to shame. It ended up with the losing candidate for king of the -hoboes being dragged off the platform. Scoop Shovel Scotty, the ex king, got a bit too personal about the winner. Hobo Benson. The Republicans and Demo crats will both have to go far to match the platform adopted by the hoboes. Party Platform It stood four-square for four hours' work a day, four days' work a week, three months va cation with pay, free employ ment offices, S1.50 an hour min imum pay, better welfare law, S100 a month for all persons over 60 and 100 per cent Americanism. In taking the oath of office, Hobo Benson swore "not to veto any legislation submitted for in creasing the size of handouts" and not to sail at any time with more than three sheets to the wind." Draws Large Crowd The annual convention of "Tourists Union Number 62" drew 15,000 to 20.000 persons to this Iowa town. Some were real hoboes. Others were would be bums attracted by the delicious aroma of mulligan stew. When Scoop Shovel found he had been voted down, he couldn't stand it. He hopped to the microphone and began de claiming on what he thought of Benson, Britt and the world in general. The air got pretty blue and Scoop Shovel had to be hauled away. live with them The minority report had ask ed that segregated chapters be given until March 1 to change their status. To this Millsaps re plied: "Even the Supreme court did not rule that we had to comply with this law immediately." Robert G. Menzies was favored to head the committee. It was Menzies who hit back Tuesday at a last minute Soviet effort to rally Egyptian opposition to the plan. Cairo dispatches today said Egypt would counter the West ern plans with a bid for a 45 nation "truly representative conference and hinted that the .West's envoys might not be re ceived at all. Egypt was withholding any ac tion until the end of the Suez conference, and there was every indication today's session would be the last. j But Cairo hinted that Nasser would be more willing to receive a delegation from both sides with both the Dulles plan and the one put forward by India's V. K. Krishna Menon. India Wins Support India had the full support of Egypt and the Soviet Union in its plan which would merely set up an "advisory" body for the canal. Lined up with them was Indonesia. But the big break of the con ference came when the Afro Asian bloc forged at Bandung split wide open on the issue. Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and Eth- Veterans Reminded 01 Allowance Delay Veterans who plan to start school this fall under the Korean GI bill can avoid trouble for themselves by taking along enough money of their own to see them through the first two months of training, S. T. Bran nock of the Veterans Adminis tration office said today. Under the law setting up Ko rea GI training, it takes two months for the first GI allowance checks to reach the veterans, he explained. Once the allowances start coming they will cover every month of training com pleted, as long as their schools file monthly attendance certifi cates with the Veterans Admin istration. Brannock gave these reasons for the length of time rquired to make the initial payments: Under the law the allowance must be paid after the end of each month of training com pleted. For veterans who begin training after the" 20th of a month, the GI allowances usu ally are not paid until sometime after the end of the following lull month of training. These fac tors amount to at least one month's delay, he said. After the close of the month, the veteran must sign a certifi cation he was attending class during the month. The school sends this certification to the VA. Usually a veteran's check should go out within 20 days iopia sided with the West and Dulles suggested his plan be known as a five-nation proposal. Also supporting the American stand were Britain, France, Ja pan, Holland, West Germany, Portugal, Australia. Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and Italy. College Enrollment Covers Wide Area Ashland Southern Oregon college's 1956 summer enroll ment figures based upon geo graphical distribution have been released by Mrs. Mabel W. Winston, registrar. Out of a total enrollment of 539 students, Jackson county ranked highest on the list with 236 enrollees. Josephine county with 55 registered was next, fol lowed closely by Klamath coun ty with 53, Douglas county with 50, and Coos county with 41. Students from 17 other coun ties also had students registered this summer with 10 states also sending pupils. Hawaii and the Canal (Zone each had one student. Watertown. Conn. OJ.R) A judge said Clement R. Goulett deserved a S90 fine even if he was telling the truth when he said he was going 40 miles an hour slower than reported by the arresting officer. The policeman clocked him at 120 m.p.h. after the time VA receives the certification. Brannock explained that un der the Korean GI bill, a veteran receives a single allowance check to cover each month of training. With the help of that check, he must meet all his own training expenses tuition, fees, books, supplies, and the like. Frisky, little shoe with stitched tucks on the high riding vamp.
