Idaho Power Co. Attorney A. S. Grant immediately filed a demurrer asking dismissal of the complaint. Circuit Judge F. L. Hubbard indicated that he may have a decision on the motion this week. Hu Federal LlcenM Idaho Power Co. has a feder al license for construction of Brownlee dam and two other low head dams in the Hells Can yon reach of the Snake. A date of Sept. 12 had been set last week for a hearing a request by the utility company to waive Oregon law and obtain a state permit for development of the Hells Canyon site. The State Hydroelectric commission is scheduled to listen to the com pany's arguments for the permit. The commission has set Sept. 8 as the deadline for written protests to such waivers. The indictment returned yes terday had been returned to the jury at the request of Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton, for re-wording. In filing a demurrer. Grant cited several other cases through out the country where federal permits, such as the one issued for the construction of Pelton dam in Oregon, have overruled state law. Grants said that it has been proved that any state act would be superseded by a federal pow er act. Violation Denied T. E. Roach, president of Idaho Power company, immediately is sued a statement, denying that his company has violated any law in starting construction of Brownlee dam. The company has done every thing in its power voluntarily to meet Oregon requirements by applying for a state license and we believe the company has done nothing in conflict with any ap plicable provisions of Oregon law," Roach said. Maximum penalty possible under the charges brought yes terday by the grand Jury would be $1000 fine and six-months imprisonment. Western Australia Offers New Start 8ydney (U.PJ Looking for a start in life where the land sells at 50 cents an acre? Then go weet, young man, to Western Australia. The West Australian govern ment has opened vast tracts of land In the vicinity of Esperance where 3.000 acres can be taken up for a down payment of $60. The total payment can be made over a 20-year period at five per cent Interest. The move is part of a campaign by the West Austra lian government to encourage settlement of its more remote areas. The Esperance area is located on the southern coast of West Australia some 350 miles from Perth. The town of Esperance has a population of 700 with a hospital, post office, two hotels, two garages, two butcher shops, a bakery and a drug store. Rainfall in the area averages about 22 inches a year and the temperature ranges from 52 de grees in winter to 83 degrees in summer. Applicants for land must take up residence within one year after the applications are ap proved, and must make their homes on the land for the next five years. The government also requires that one tenth of the new land be cultivated each year for a four-year period. Skin Diseases Cured By 'Potent Weapons' Pittsburgh (U.P.) Medical science has developed new "po tent weapons' 'to cure many skin diseases caused by disorders remote from the blemish. Dr. Harry Robinson Jr., pro fessor of dermatology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, told family doctors here that long practical applica tion has proven the value of new steroid hormones and antibotics. He said two new steroid hor mones, identified as prednisone and prednisoline, are four , to five times more potent than powerful cortisone and ACTH in curing some skin diseases. The medical researcher said he based his conclusions on treatment of 5.000 patients over the past four to five years. Dr. Robinson told the practi tioners the cause of many skin diseases may be found far from the point of the eruption on the body. Because of this, he said, the family physician should not treat the symptoms alone. The skin. Doctor Robinson added, must be viewed as a func tioning organ, just as the heart, lungs or nervous system. Around Hollywood r ALINE MOSBY United Preu Correspondent Editor'! Not: Aline Mosby Ii with the L'P convention bureau In San Francisco. Today's guest column Is hv Phil Rapp. wrlter-dlrertor of Wallv Cox's new TV series, "The Adventures of Hiram Bollldar." BY PHIL RAPP Hollywood (U.PJ I was sor ry to see "Mr. Peepers" go. He was a nice fellow and he was around so long I'd grown to like him. But I can't lament his passing too greatly. For ten years I've wanted to put "Hiram Holliday" on film, and in my mind at least, there was only one person cut out to play the part Wally Cox. Oregon Reports New Cases of TB Dr. A. Erin Merkel recently urged all Jackson county resi dents to get chest x-rays and emphasized that there were 56 new cses of tuberculosis report ed in Oregon during June. This compared with 45 new cases for June a year ago, ac cording to the Oregon State Board of Health. The cumlative total of new TB cases in the state during the first six months of this year is 303. Last year's total was 305 . The Jackson County Public Health association operates a chest x-ray clinic at the Sacred Heart hospital for the conven ience of the public. Clinic hours are from 2 to 5 p.m. every Thurs day and from 7 to 9 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month. More than $800 million were spent in the United States last year by governmental and non governmental agencies for the prevention, diagnosis and treat ment of tuberculosis, Dr. Merkel said. The average cost of treat ment of a person who has the disease is $15,000, he add-d. Recording Artist Due At Church Thursday Alan McGill, recording artist of Hollywood, Calif., will ap pear at the First Nazarene church, First and Holly sts., at 8 p.m.. August 23. Use Tribune Want Ads For Best Results When "Peepers" folded on NBC TV, I saw my chance and started negotiations with Wally right away. Bewildered Teacher For one thing "Peepers" had a single dimension. He was the shy and somewhat bewildered school teacher whose response in any situation was predictable. "Hiram" preserves much of "Peepers" but adds something. In the new TV series, Hiram Holliday, a character created by Paul Galileo for Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1939, is an obscure proof reader on a New York newspaper. His spare dollars and hours are devoted to develop ing an amazing knowledge of the world and physical skills like fencing, swimming, judo, etc., so that beneath the in nocuous facade of proof reader he is really a highly trained athlete, sort of a pint-sized Doug las Fairbanks. Publisher Saved Hiram's adventures begin when, by catching a transposed comma, he saves the publisher from a million dollar damage suit. The publisher sends him on a round-the-world trip and as signs a reporter to write about his adventures. Thus Wally gets to show an under side of his nature that could never burst out of the "Peepers" frame. His first "Hi ram Holliday" film will appear Oct. 3. Hiram Holliday is another Walter Mitty, the difference be ing he really can do the things Mitty dreams about. LEGAL NOTICES Mineral Application No. Orefon 04127 Land Office.
