August 17. 19S8 Cherries Remain On Inspection List There are no inspection re quirements on taking apples, peaches, pears, plums or other fruit available at this time into the state of California in small lots, according to C. B. Cordy, county horticulture agent. Cordy pointed out that inspec tion requirements on cherries are still in effect. Tourists buying other fruit in this area can take it through the quarantine station with no trouble and there are no inspec tion requirements on this end, he said. Most vegetables can also be taken in but in the case of cu cumbers, melons and squash, a certificate of origin is required. This certificate would be av ailable at the county extension office. AP Writer Released From Hungary Prison Budapest, Hungary U.P Endre Marton, Associated Press correspondent in Budapest was released from prison yesterday, it was officially announced. Marton was sentenced by Communist Hungarian authori ties to six years in prison for "espionage and plotting against the state." Marton was fully pardoned a spokesman of the ministry of in terior said. Marton was arrested by Hun garian Communist police in Feb ruary, 1955, but did not receive sentence until Jan. 14, 1956. United Press Correspondent Ilona Nyilas, Marton's wife in private life, received a three year prison term. She was re leased from prison earlier this year. Most Cities Have Own Off-Street Parking Chicago (U.R) About 60 per cent of 1,137 cities of more than 10,000 population checked in a survey own and operate one or more off-street parking lots. The figures were compiled as of late last year and were re ported recently by International City Managers' Association. The number is up about four per cent over 1954. Seventy-seven cities 20 fewer than in 1954 established munic ipal off-street parking lots for the first time in 1955. Weather Expert Says Chicago 'Not Windy' Chicago (U.R) Chicago just doesn't live up to its nickname of "Windy City," a weather ex pert says. Dr. Richard M. Page, psychol ogist and amateur climatologist, said Atlantic City, N.J., would be a better contender for the title, at least in midsummer. In July, the windiest cities, in descending order of wind veloc ity, are Atlantic City, Oklahoma City, Okla.; New York; Wichita. Kan.; San Francisco; Amarillo. Tex.: Miami. Fla.; Cleveland; Boston, and Huron, S. D., Page said. Chicago, despite its nickname, is 23rd in the list of 63 cities se lected by the weather bureau as representative. Page is the author of a book entitled "How to Pick the Right Climate." He also is the man who developed the concept of "thermidity," combining tem perature and humidity to tell people how they actually will feel under various weather con ditions. Thermidity, he said, is sub ject to change by wind. The areas around Mobile, Ala., and Miami, Fla., benefit particularly from wind which reduces the thermid ity, he said. FOR RESULTS USE TRIBUNE WANT ADS Physicist Develops Wavelength Measure Chicago (U.R) A North western University physicist has developed a new instrument which can measure objects in terms of light wavelengths to a precision of one part in 10 mil lion. The device may be used for measuring such objects as fila ments or for studying optical corrosion. The instrument uses corner cube reflectors which send light back in the opposite direction from which it came. The reflec tors are employed in a new type of interferometer, an instru ment used for many years by physicists to measure light wave lengths by light interference phe nomena. The corner-cube interferometer was developed by Dr. Edson R. Peck, associate professor .of phys- Hells Canyon Project Stoppage Rejected . Washington U.P) Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black has refused to order the Idaho Power Co. to stop work tempo rarily on the Hells Canyon proj ect in the Pacific Northwest. The company was authorized by the Federal Power Commis sion last August to build three dams on the Snake river be tween Idaho and Oregon. A group of public power advocates took the issue to court. They favor a single high dam to be built by the federal government. The controversy is now before the U.S. Court of Appeals here. The opposition, known as the National Hells Canyon Associa tion, is trying to stop construc tion until the lawsuit is settled. Officials Want Water Murky and Not Clear Des Moines (U.R) Officials at the water works aren't using muddled thinking when they say they prefer to get murky rather than clear water from the Rac coon River, source of the city's water. : They explained that when the water is clear the sun gets through and promotes , the growth of algae called diatones. These become large enough to plug the filters and make the job of processing the water more difficult. - ' But, according to M. K. Ten ny, water works manager, dia tones don't grow as fast in cloud ed water. And, he added, the clearing and purification of muddy water is comparatively simple. Mt. Angel, Ore.
