CONZALES United Press Correspondent Washington (U.PJ Backstah at the White House: President Eisenhower and hi. White House staff officially an taking a strict business-as-usual attitude toward the Democratic pow-wow in Chicago. Some oi the White House and home radio and TV sets are humming dur ing free moments, however, keeping the Republican high command up to date on what the opposition camp is doing. White House staffers are holding their counterfire until next week, when the Republicans have their inning at San Francisco. Earlier this week, Mr. Eisenhower seem ed less interested in the Chicago events than some of his aides. On the conventions opening day, the President was out on the White House lawn chipping and putting go,lf balls. Before the Republican con vention has even started. Presi dent Eisenhower's acceptance speech is well along in the draft ing process. One of the speech helpers is understood to be Arthur Larsen, Undersecretary of Labor. Larsen's political star got a big boost after he wrote a book, "A Republican Looks at His Party." His effort was well received by administration Ships Unload at Dewline Station; Head for Seattle Point Barrow, Alaska (U.R) The first two ships of a 56-ship Navy task force supplying the Dewline . radar network were en route back to Seattle today, after completing unloading. Other units of the group are unloading bulk and drummed petroleum products, construction material, general cargo and elec tronic equipment at the last ma jor Dewline site here. The group supplies the entire western Dewline sector, extend ing 2,000 miles from the north west tip of Alaska to Shepherd bay, 200 miles due north of Hud son bafy, Canada. In let-Free Water The two ships which com pleted unloading are the USNS Ontonagon and the SS Glove Hitch. They are now in ice-free water and should reach Seattle on schedule. Ships now unloading in the Point Barrow area were led through a. rugged ice pack by Admiral D. C. Towner's flagship USS Eldorado. Admiral Towner decided to force through the pack after waiting more than a week for ice to clear. Five ships have received ma jor damage from ice thus far, and the USS Burton Island, an icebreaker, is en route to Seattle for emergency repairs. It is due to arrive Saturday. Larsen is ne of the organizers of the so ailed "Egghead" campaign com littee, the Committee of Arts nd Science for Eisenhower. After the shooting is over at ian Francisco, the President and Mrs. Eisenhower will slip away for a few days at the chic, Riviera-type Cypress Point Club on Monterey Peninsula south of t,, convention city. The Cypress Point golf course, and the fa mous Pebble Beach course near by, offer the President plenty of sand traps and narrow fairways. If he chances to hook or slice on some of the holes, his ball could wind up in the Pacific Ocean. The Monterey Peninsula is known as one of the beauty spots of America. Plenty of big name golfers and duffers will be around to make up a presi dential foursome. Vaccine Developed To Combat Grippe Washington !U.R) A new vac cine has proved at least SO to 70 per cent effective against some forms of that king-size winter troublemaker, grippe. That's the word of government scientists who reported Thursday night on extensive tests they ran last winter on 16.000 recruits at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois. "All the evidence indicates," they reported, that the vaccine provides "substantial" protection against the so-called adenovi ruses which cause some of the worst kinds of grippe. The scientists, representing the National Institute of Health and the Navy, said the vaccine looks like a "promising" weapon for reducing the heavy incidence of respiratory infections among military recruits'. . Eventually, the vaccine may also prove helpful to the general civilian population which suffers untold miseries every year from grippe and other common res piratory infections.
