August 15. 1S58 Marilyn Russell To Be Graduated; Wedding Day Set Oakland Graduating Sunday, August 19, from Samuel Merritt Hospital School o Nursing in Oakland, California, will be Miss Marilyn M. Russell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Russell, 120 Newtown street, Medford. Miss Russell plans to join the nursing staff of Sacred Heart hospital in Medford after receiving her diploma. Miss Russell is engaged to marry Robert G. Kaufman of Forest Grove, Ore., November 17. . Before entering Merritt School of Nursing, Miss Russell was graduated from Medford Senior High school and studied at Wil lamette University in Salem. Miss Russell was vice-president of her class in 1954. Mer ritt School of Nursing has grad uated more than 1,300 nurses since its founding in 1909, many of them now employed in Ore gon hospitals. Mr. and Mrs. Russell and an other daughter, Nancy, plan to attend the graduation exercises in Oakland. Tennessee Family Guests in Medford Mr. and Mrs. James F. Arthur Jr., and son James III. left yesterday after having been guests in Medford of Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Haupert, 2123 Capital avenue. The visitors made trips to Crater Lake National park and other southern Oregon scenic spots, and were honored guests at a small cocktail party which the Hauperts gave in their honor. In late July and early August the Hauperts had as guests Mrs. Haupert s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Brown, Clayton, Ga., and Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Ben nett, Savannah, Ga., family friends. Society Juvenile Officer Speaks for Union; Officers Elected Mrs. Kay 'Crowell, Jackson county juvenile officer, spoke' at a meeting of Medford Women's Christian Temperance union held a s t Thursday in Hawthorne park. Mrs. Crowell spoke of the pro posed juvenile detention home planned by the county, and said that it is urgently needed. The home will be ready for use in 1957, according to Mrs. Crowell. The speaker also talked of the Children's Farm Home at Cor vallis which is operated by the WCTU, and stated that 10 child ren from Jackson county are cared for at the home. The WCTU also has a Youth Temper ance council in Oregon, and a Loyal Temperance Legion for the younger children. The Med ford LTL is directed by Mrs. Ellmore Gilstrap, whose husband is pastor of Central Avenue Church of Christ. Speaking of juvenile delin quency, Mrs. Crowell stated that young people who attend Sunday school, or belong to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts troops and other youth agencies are seldom in trouble. Mrs. Ina Renker gave the devotional, and Mrs. Guy Cox, president, conducted a short business meeting. Election was held, with Mrs. Cox being reelected president. Mrs. G. O. Sanden was named vice - president; Mrs. Ernest Santo, recording secretary; Mrs. Mabel H o u c k, corresponding secretary; Miss Elizabeth Burr, treasurer. It was announced that the WCTU would not meet at the Girls Community club for the time being since the clubhouse is to be re-built. The annual state convention will be held at Jennings lodge near Portland September 4-7. Mrs. Cox was named delegate to represent the -Medford union. An invitation was extended by the Ashland union to the Med ford group to meet with them August 23 for a picnic luncheon at noon. Medford members need ing transportation are asked to telephone 2-8368, or 2-4198. Serving for last week's meet ing were Mrs. Ernest Santo, Mrs. Eva Low and Mrs. Edna Purcell. The Lady Lions won the sweepstakes prize at the Prospect Jamboree in June. Last Friday evening the Lions and auxiliary held the annual picnic at Union Creek. Edward Kellys Home From Trip Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kelly have returned to Medford after spending a vacation in Michigan. The Kellys were joined by their son, Pfc. Bernard Kelly, who is stationed at Ft. Jackson in South Carolina with the United States Army. The three visited relatives in Detroit and later spent some time in Bay City, Mich. The Kellys, who are baseball fans, saw three big league games, one between the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers and another the Cleveland Indians played Tigers.
