Auguit IS. 1958 Rayburn Sets Target for Democratic Campaigners; Eisenhower in Center Chicago (U.R) Speaker Sam Rayburn let up the target Tues day night for this fall's Demo cratic campaigners and put Pres ident Eisenhower squarely in its center. The 74-year-old political vet eran took over as permanent chairman of the Democratic Na tional Convention for the third consecutive time and immediate ly launched an all out attack on policies of the Republican ad ministration, and the man who heads it. Blam on President "... I believe in putting the blame where it really lies," Ray burn said in blasting the Eisen hower administration, ". . . on the shoulders of the President of the United States." The stern but beloved Mr. Sam of Capitol Hill lost no time in stilling the ovation set off for him when he strode to the ros trum. "All right, that's enough,'? he said authoritatively to placard waving, parading delegates, in cluding some of his fellow Tex ans. Then he got down to the bus iness of smiting Republicans, in cluding Mr. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard M. Nix on. Nixon Is a favorite target of every Democrat, but many have been reluctant to aim directly at the President. Rayburn demanded that Mr. Eisenhower be held accountable for his administration Prepared Text Stronger The speaker's prepared text was even stronger. It wasn't spoken from the rostrum, but Rayburn had written down: "The American people are entitled to a real leader in the White House. The American people want a man who is President in fact as well as in name." Instead, Rayburn ad libbed "The more Republicans I serve under, the prouder I am to be a Democrat." As for Nixon, Rayburn noted that Republicans are claiming Stevenson Lacks 'Fighting Spirit Truman Says Chicago (U.R) Former Pres ident Truman said today that Adlai E. Stevenson lacks the necessary "fighting spirit" of a Democratic presidential nomi nee, v Mr. Truman, who is working night and day to win the nomi nation for New York Gov. Av erell Harriman, said that Stev enson, now the front running candidate, "lacks the kind of fighting spirit that we need to win." Mr. Truman opened a news conference with a blast at news papers which have said that his espousal of Harriman's cause would harm the former Presi dent! place in history. Wants Fighting Candidate "I am not worried about the personal consequences," Mr. Tru man aaid. He said his basic purpose in this Democratic National Con vention was to put across "a fighting candidate" who was not hobbled by "reservations or evasions." He said he feared that Steven son followed "the counsel of hesitation" which would lead the Democratic party into the hands of moderates. "I am shocked that any liberal Democrat would abandon the i New Deal or the Fair Deal as out of date," he said. " The former President, making an energetic last ditch effort to stop Stevenson, said he thought the former . Illinois governor might represent the "destruc tion of social philosophy" if he won the nomination here. Mr. Truman said he had noth ing personal against Stevenson; as a matter of fact, he liked him This brought a big laugh from the reporters assembled in the flood-lighted crystal ballroom of the Blackstone hotel. Mr. Truman also criticized Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, widow of the late President, who rec ommended to the convention in a speech that they forget the New Deal or the Fair Deal and look to the future. Crowd Smaller The former President said "Mrs. Roosevelt is entirely mis informed in suggesting that Mr. Truman was trying to create a deadlock and boost the candi dacy of dark-horse Sen. Stuart Symington of Missouri. The former President's news conference was attended by less than half the newsmen who had come to his meeting last Satur day when he first announced his support of Gov. Harriman. Perle Mesta Proves Right To Party Title With Lavish Affair Chicago (U.R) Perle Mesta did it again. The "hostess with the most est" proved her right to the title Tuesday night with the most lavish party of the Democratic convention. Her elaborate $20, 000 supper dance drew the big gest wigs of the party to sip champagne from rose-trimmed glasses. Political differences were checked at the door as candidates kingmakers, delegates and who-have-you concentrated on hav ing a good time. Truman Almost Plays Former President Harry S. Truman almost played the piano in an impromptu floor show. Speaker Sam Rayburn did get into the act, as did convention keynoter Tennessee Gov. Frank Clememt. A relaxed Adlai Stevenson an swered questions of "How's it going?" with a grin and "it sure smells good." His rival, New York Gov. Averell Harriman was almost the only big Democratic name who didn't show up. He sent his wife. Texas Sen. Lyndon B. John son was on hand attending his first big social affair since his heart attack last year. The Democratic movers and shakers filed up marble stairs of the Blackstone hotel through a police cordon and an orchid trimmed velvet rope which were little help against a mob of watchers jamming the lobby and the sidewalk. Mrs. Mesta's sec retary was posted at a table just outside the brocade-hung door way to collar any would-be gate crashers. With House doorkeeper Wil liam M. "Fishbait" Miller hand ling the introductions, Mrs. Mes ta welcomed guests from Mr. Truman to Spike Jones; Carmine De Sapio to Joan Blondell. In side the pink and white trimmed Mayfair room plaster angels and swans made of ice posed pret tily with the tenderloin strogan off and hors d'oeuvres on a sat in and tulle covered buffet table. 'Don't You Dare' It was after midnight in the middle of a hilarious "floor show" when master of ceremon ies singer Phil Reagan introduc ed Mr. Truman and shouts of "piano, piano," drowned out snouts of "speech, speech." Mr. Truman, who had just received a standing ovation, seemed tempted. But "the boss Mrs. Truman vetoed the idea. "Don't you dare," said she out of the corner of her mouth. He didn't. Reagan, wearing a Harriman button, didn't get around to in troducing Stevenson. Mr. Truman laughed with the loudest when newscaster H. V. Kaltenborn imitated Mr. Tru man's 1948 imitation of Kalten born predicting a Dewey victory. Ste venson, accused by former Presi dent Truman of lacking "fight ing spirit," said today that Dem ocrats should save their "abuse" for the Republicans. The front running candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination said in a talk to Flor ida delegates that it does not serve the party's best interests "to demean one another." "For my part the enemy is not other Democrats," Steven son said. "The enemy is the Re publicans." Stevenson did not mention Mr. Truman, who wants the Demo cratic national convention to nominate Gov. Averell Harri man, but he clearly had the for mer President's barbs in his mind. Mr. Truman was loosing an other blast at Stevenson while the former Illinois governor was talking to the Floridans. Mr. Truman said Stevenson "lacks the kind of fighting spirit that we need to win." But Mr. Truman backtracked on his declaration of Tuesday that Stevenson couldn't win the election. He said today that Ste venson could be elected if he runs on a good Democratic plat form and has a lot of help. Porter Unable To See Oregon Hint There is no hint as to what the Oregon delegation to the Democratic National convention will do in case of a deadlock be tween Adlai Stevenson and Averell Harriman for the Demo cratic presidential nomination, according to Charles O. Poter, Eugene. Porter, a candidate for con gress from this district, is at tending the convention as an observer; In a telephone conver sation with the Mail Tribune, he pointed out the Oregon delega tion is committed to support Stevenson for president and Ke fauver for vice president as long as either has a chance, as a result of the primary election. But in the event they are re leased, he said, there is no in dication as to which way they would go, and it is possible the delegation might split. The delegation, which is head ed by Sen. Richard L. Neuber- ger, was to have held its second caucus last night when Sen. Wayne L. Morse was scheduled to speak to the Oregonians. Truman Correct, Republican Says San Francisco U.R) Vice Chairman H. Meade Alcorn Jr., of the Republican Convention Arrangements committee said today former President Harry Truman's comment that Adlai E. Stevenson couldn't win the election was "one of the most truthful statements" made at the Democratic convention. "It seems," said Alcorn, who also is national committeeman from Connecticut, "that he (Mr. Truman) expressed what was in the hearts of all the delegates at the convention that Adlai cannot win. "No candidate ever did so badly as Stevenson did in 1952, except for one other." Alcorn did not name who the other candidate was. "Truman's statement," he add ed, "was one of the most truth ful statements made at the con vention so far."
