Louisville Fights
To Halt Scrapping
Of Navy's 'Lady Lou'
Louisville, Ky. UR! The
Navy's "Lady Lou," will never
go to the scrap heap if a group
of Louisvillians can help it.
"Lady Lou," is the cruiser
Louisville, a veteran of World
War II battles from one end of
the Pacific to the other. Now al
most 30 years old, the cruiser
was one of 100 ships the Navy
recently asked Congress for per
mission to scrap.
This proposal brought an im
mediate response from the group
in her namesake city, who began
investigating the possibility of
acquiring the veteran warship
and bringing it up the Mississippi
and Ohio rivers to a final moor
ing on Louisville's riverfront.
The bill to permit the scrap
ping of the ships was lost in the
Congressional gristmill for this
term, and "Lady Lou," gained a
reprieve, but her backers feel
that this just gives them more
time to get ready for action
when her Navy days finally do
come to an end.
Their proposals to turn the
cruiser into a permanent war
memorial in the Ohio river
would mean quite an under
taking. Probably Two-year Job
River engineers say it would
be feasible to float the ship up
t the Mississippi and Ohio in the
spring of the year when the riv
ers are at their highest point.
She would have to be stripped
to lighten her, and then her su
perstructures would have to be
removed temporarily to get
under some of the bridges.
It might take two years or
more, and the total cost for tow
ing and other expenses would
run well into six figures.
Still, the proponents of the
plan believe it could be done,
and that much of the cost of the
operation and subsequent main
tenance of the vessel could be
met by admission charges for
public viewing of the ship.
They point out that the battle
ship Texas is now moored in a
permanent slip at the San Ja
cinto Battleground State Park
near Houston, and is virtually
self-supporting.
The people of Oregon also
succeeded for a number of years
in preserving the battleship Ore
gon of Spanish-American War
fame, but during World War II
the old battlewagon was first
used as an ammunition barge,
and finally was broken up for
scrap.

Board Rejects Vote

The utility board declined to
indorse a petition signed by some
33 Eugene businessmen asking

Two Men Appear
In Circuit Court
