MBS KBES (Channel 5) Use Tribune Want Ads Around Hollywood Editor's note: Aline Mosbr Is on vacation. Today's guest editor, famed dress designer Don Loper, takes a swing at Marilyn Monroe's wardrobe and European design ers. By DON LOPER Written for United Press Hollywood OI.PJ The other day a visiting member of Euro pean royalty dropped in at my Beverly Hills salon, and after she wrote out a fat heck for her purchases. I asked her in typ ical candid fashion why she didn't buy her clothes in Paris or Rome. "I never buy anything in Eu rope if I can help it," she told me. I think her opinion of the botches that come out of most of the European coutourier sa lons is shared by chic women all over the world. This year women are completely disregarding the so-called fashion pace setters abroad. I know that most of the Hollywood stars haven't given them a second look. Styles Dreadful I think the new French and Italian styles are dreadful. I don't know what they're trying to prove with those jazzed up, over junked numbers, with nothing where it's supposed to be, so that the wearer comes out look ing like a freak. Those new hat styles are hor rible because you have to look twice to see if you know who'-s under them. They remind me of Harriman Poses With Stevenson Supporters Chicago (U.R) Gov. Averell Harriman, rushing through his hotel lobby, paused briefly to pose for pictures Sun day with Rep. James Roosevelt (D-Calif.) and his new bride. Afterward, Roosevelt was asked whether he was support ing Harriman. who served in the administration of the late Presi dent Roosevelt. "Oh no." he said, with a glance at his bride. "We're both support ing Adlai Stevenson." Dead Une Sunrtay Classified Is at at noon Saturday BEVERLY'S TV & RADIO Phono 2-9001 . 34 Crater Lake Aye. For i n s t a nt; some months ago I saw woman .who evidently had suffered great injury to her bram, appar ently from a stroke. From Uvarz ner nusDana i got the story of its sudden com ing and the subsequent great mental change in her. She was feeling weak, terribly tired and miserable; her brain didn't feel right, and she had lost all inter est in life, her children, her husband, and her home. She walked with a slight limp; her face was dull and without ex pression, and her mouth was a bit lop-sided. What distressed me as a teach er of medicine was that when the woman had been put through a thorough medical over-hauling and gallstones had been found, the young doctors had decided that her troubles were all due to these stones. But a few min utes' questioning showed that she had never had any indiges tion, or gas, or abdominal pain. The gallstones were as silent and harmless as if they were out in her hand-bag. They had nothing to do with the case. Her troubles were all due to the little stroke which had wreck ed her brain. As often happens in such cases, my advice to leave gallstones alone was over ruled by the woman's family. and an operation was performed. Today, the poor woman wishes she had not permitted it be cause she is now so much more tired than she was before. An operation on the abdomen never cures a stroke. AMEBIAIS Many persons tell me that they have been treated for 2 or 3 years for amebiasis and still they are as miserable as when they started. Practically always in these cases the symptoms are clearly those of nervousness, and it is doubtful if the persorr ever had amebiasis. A laboratory girl can easily make a mistake be cause of a droplet of fat can look much like an ameba. But certainly if the woman ever did have amebiasis it was not pro ducing her symptoms. One can have a few amebas just as one By ALINI M0SBT Unitod Pros Correspondent the old Mae West school of 1930. I predict the stars will go on wearing the same things which they know are good for them alone. Marilyn Monroe will stick to those botches with , the seam down the back and sewed-in look. Her clothes are shockingly bad but she'll still get her mes sage across, so who are we to argue with her? Older Version June Allyson will still wear her young girl numbers with the Peter Pan collar, and Claudette Colbert will be an older version of Junie. Lucille Ball will wear anything that strikes her at any time, and what she can't wear she'll carry. Betty Hutton has given up that jazzy style and she's marvelously chic with sim ple things made of beautiful fab rics. Irene Dunne and Gracie Alien will be the fashion leaders with dateless gowns. And Tallulah will dress only for the stage and wear her blouse and slacks, low shoes and mink coat for every thing else. ic oir ii.'.riirnrYTH rtiorr,fD,r77is l-lect Stnafsr Way" Jets L Irtii, Cfceiraesj 402 Emeritus Consultant In Medlclae, Mayo Clinie Emeritus Pro lessor of MadKlne. Mayo Foundation can have a few fleas, but they are unable to produce any symp toms. Usually, it is obvious to -me that the woman was born to be rather frail and full of worries and aches and pains everywhere, perhaps like her sickly mother before her. When I ask carefully, I find that she never had an attack of diarrhea, and she never went traveling in a tropical country where she might have picked up some amebas. (I know they can be picked up in this Country, but such slight infesta tions rarely cause symptoms. I do not see a case of true ame biasis once a year.) Most of the few patients with so-called ame biasis that I see were attended by a physician who is enthus iastic about this disease and so sure that it accounts for prac tically all the symptoms of ner vous people, that he treats most of his patients for amebas. Na turally, most of his medical brethren suspect that nearly all of his diagnoses are wrong. I remember such a man who told me that he, with his small prac tice, always had a dozen pa tients in the hospital with "amebiasis." Should Examine Stools If a person has recently travel ed in a tropical country, and if there he got an attack of dysen tery, his stools should certainly be examined, and if amebas are found, he should be treated. But after three -years of practice in a tropical country, I feel sure that most persons can be prac tically cured of amebiasis with A local bakery is about to market a new teen age product made from dough wrapped around an agate. If after that, a few amebae are still found, another day's treatment will usually wipe them out. But here's the important point: if, after a few days of strenuous treatment with a drug ' which kills the amebas in the bowel, the patient goes on just the same with all his old nervous symptoms, I am satisfied that the amebas had, nothing to do with the case, and I would never think of carrying on treatment for the parasites. The surest sign of a wise doctor is his abil ity to say to a patient, "Sure, you have gallstones or a dia phragmatic hernia, or a fibroid on your uterus, or a little goiter, or some varicose veins, but they are silent; they have nothing to do with your symptoms." A Lump In The Throat Millions of highly nervous people complain of a feeling that they have a big lump in the throat which won't go either up or down. This is what the Greeks described over 2500 years ago as a "globus." It is due to ner vousness and never to anything else. Hence persons who have this sensation had better not waste money on doctors and medicine. If they will keep a little diary they will see that the "lump" comes usually when life has "gotten them down" bit. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for hira to answer requests for information of to attempt to diagnose by mail.
