Lo wma n, of New York City,, who for years has worked with Dr. Howard Rusk. Every woman in the tvaitei aJvarea country ana especially every woman with bad arthritis, or a stiff arm, or a crippling paralysis would have had a wonderful time studying this model room. There were all sorts of arrangements . in the kitchen to be used by a person who has only one hand, or only one or two functioning fingers, or who cannot bend over to pick anything off the floor or off a low shelf. In the kitchen prac tically everything was on one level. The telephone was so ar ranged that it could be answer ed just by pushing a button, and then talking at it. There were long tongs and canes of various kinds with a hook or a magnet on the end so that the woman could pick things off the floor or pull on her socks. There were knives, forks and spoons on long handles or on big handles that could be grasped with a hand that would not close well, and there were spoons that could be fastened to a paralyzed hand. There were gadgets that could be manipulated by only one or two fingers. These gadgets and other interesting ones can be found in Dr. Rusk's book, "Liv ing with a Disability," (Double day). VENEREAL DISEASE As I have said before in this column, many good people, through their strong objections to hearing anything about ven ereal disease, for years compelled editors to keep the -words syph ilis and gonorrhea out of the papers. Finally, educated per sons began to learn that always in a large percentage of cases, venereal diseases have been con tracted by perfectly innocent wives and others. Because of our desire to keep our children ignorant, we made it easier for hundreds of thousaands of teen agers to get venereal disease. They get it because they did not know the dangers they ran, and they had no idea of protect ing themselves. A few hundred times when I have found nervous syphilis in a highly respectable married man of 60, he has told me that he contracted the disease when he was 14 or 15 and knew nothing of the dangers he ran. TJnfor unately, also, he did not know how terrible a danger he ran in not getting adequate treat ment for his disease. When he Freighter Explosion Kills 10, Hurts 12 Lewes, Del. (U.R) An explo sion rocked the German freight er Heidberg in the lower Dela ware Bay off here Friday. Cmdr. Roderick Edwards of the Port of Philadelphia said that 10 crewmen were killed and 12 others badly burned.. Edwards said the explosion is believed to have occurred in the engine room of the 277-foot long vessel, built in Germany in 1942. The port commander said four ships were standing by the strick en Heidberg and that she was in no immediate danger of sinking. He added, however, that she was unable to move under her own power. The Heidberg, carrying a load of iron ore, was reported in bound for Philadelphia. Beebe Hospital here reported it had "casualties" but would not disclose the number. Then, when I examined his wife, I sometimes found that she also had the disease. She had never had any reason to suspect this. Because of these facts, public health authorities today are try ing hard to protect our young people and the men in our Arm ed Forces from venereal diseases. The reason I am talking about this here is because when our Armed Forces' medical men try to close out a village full of women who have gathered to live off of an army camp, "the doctors need to be backed up by all the good people in the state. Without their backing, the medical officers may be unable to do much against the wealthy and power fully entrentched gangsters who own the women, and take in enormous sums de rived from their earnings. Contagious Syphilis Found When a young man comes in with venereal disease the health officers much need to find oat who gave him the infection and to whom he has already given it. I remembered a handsome young foreign army officer who was sent to this country by his government on a special mission. A few days after his arrival, when he consulted me for a measles-like eruption on his skin, I found it was acute and highly contagious syphilis. Such youngsters naturally tend to get poor treatment if only be cause the boys dread confessing their misdeeds to their parents, and the girls commonly do not know what is the matter with them. As a result, many a girl becomes sterilized so that some day when she marries she can not bear children. In some cases the pelvis become so badly ln infected that the girl later has to lose her womb and even her ovaries. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for information or to attempt to diagnose by mail.
