Propaganda Fails

Pangborn, editor of the Oregon
Journal, said yesterday Commu
nist propaganda has failed to
make the Russian people anti
American. Pangborn spent 23 days in the
Soviet Union on a study group
tour sponsored by his newspaper
and the World Affairs Council
of Oregon.
"Ordinary Russians went out
of their way to be nice to us,"
Pangborn said in an interview.
"They were extremely friendly.
They were eager to talk to us,
particularly if they knew a little
English.
"Apparently the anti - Ameri
can propaganda the people have
been fed for years is not work
ing. "Anti - American propaganda
still is everywhere. However,
Russian experts told me it has
diminished a great deal and does
not compare to the past.
"I wore a beret I picked up on
my trip, a bow tie and carried a
camera so people would know I
was a foreigner. Everywhere we
were approached by Russians

Yalta, Georgia and Moscow.-
McKay Raps Demos
On Conservation
Portland (U.R) Doug McKay,
Republican candidate for U.S.
Senator, has blasted the Dem
ocratic party for dragging con
servation into politics.
Speaking before an audience
of veterans and conservationists
at a meeting of the Veterans'
Luncheon club, McKay outlined
his 24-year conservation record
and told his audience, "I would
like to set a precedent that I
hope you will ask other can
didates to follow. Since con
servation has become a political
catchword, I think you are en
titled to a look at your speakers'
conservation records if any."
The former secretary of the
interior urged a Unified con
servation program for Oregon,
federal purchase of Klamath
Indian lands, and wildlife refuge
status for the Upper Klamath
marsh.
In other speech highlights, Mc
Kay said he favored "appoint
ment of a new assistant secretary
in charge of fish and wildlife
within the Department of In
terior, with responsibility for
unified operation of sports and
commercial fish research and
facilities."
