FOURTEEN MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday AueruM 7. 195S Upper Ohio Gels Promise of Relief From Heavy Rains Pittsburgh (U.R) Weather Bureau forecasters today prom ised clouds but no rain in the upper Ohio Valley where flash floods and high water struck Sunday during violent thunder storms. The storms left at least 14 per sons dead in Western Pennsyl vania. West Virginia and Ohio. Property damage was estimated in the millions. Families Moving Back The first of 1,200 persons to be evacuated from nearby Can onsburg, Pa., began moving back to their homes today. Wearied from the storm, they now. faced the task of cleaning up. Hundreds of others still took shelter 'in emergency quarters set up by the Red Cross, Salva tion Army, municipal agencies and the Army. National Guardsmen relieved rescue-tired Canbnsburg auxili ary police, volunteer firemen and civil defense workers. The water had swirled "eight feet deep over key highways, bridges and residential streets, flooding wide areas and knock ing many small industrial plants out of operation. The high water posed little threat to Pittsburgh where the Ohio river crested at 24.8 feet, below flood sage, at 7 p.m., Mon day. The only flooding occurred along the dock parking areas in Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle. The Ohio river was expected to reach a 31.6 foot level near Wheeling, W. Va., about noon today. Flood stage at the War wood Lock is 36 feet. But offi cials of the Wheeling Downs race track planned to cancel today's meeting should the waters rise above the expected level. The storms, which killed nine persons in Pennsylvania, includ ing three members of one fam ily drowned in a flash flood near Fayette City, also caused wide spread damage in neighboring West Virginia and Ohio. Celilo Indian Dies In 80-Foot Tumble The Dalles (U.R) Alex ander George, about 35, a Yaki ma Indian, was killed near Ce lilo yesterday when he fell from a railroad trestle to the rocky bank of the Columbia river, 80 feet below. Officers said George apparent ly was walking across the trestle to go fishing. Two persons saw his body on the rocks below yesterday mor ning and assumed he was sleep ing. After noon when they re turned and saw the body still in the same position they inves tigated and discovered George was dead. Herfer Silehf on Question of Drall Boston (U.R) Gov. Chris tian A. Herter of Massachusetts today again left the door open for a vice presidential draft. Asked at his news conference "would you accede to a draft" at the GOP National Convention, Herter said: "I have said everything I am going to say on that subject." Herter previously has refused all direct comment on the ef forts of Harold E. Stassen to dump Vice President Richard M. Nixon, except to emphasize that he plans to place "my friend" Nixon's name in nomin ation at San Francisco late this month. Commenting on Stassen's re port that former Massachusetts Gov. Robert F. Bradford had joined . the Eisenhower-Herter campaign, Herter said "I haven't seen Gov. Bradford for months." Boy Crilical After Stoppage of Heart Marshall, Tex. (U.R) A three year - old boy whose heart stopped during a routine ton sillectomy was in critical condi tion but still alive today.. Doc tors restored his heart by open ing his chest and massaging the heart. Doctors said the youngster. Bob Brayshaw, suffered 'a "one- in-a-million cardiac arrest, or heart stoppage" as a reaction to the anesthesia given him for the tonsillectomy. Doctors opened his chest and massaged the heart for about five minutes before it started beating again. The Indian meaning of Mis sissippi is "Great River."
