Yeu 'twv. of courts, foss lest or mora. m u w y .4aUv -9 1 "i VK jA U MAIL TRIBUNE Winners Announced For Show "High Spirits," a watercolor of Arabian horses painted by Mrs. Blanche Johnson, Central Point, won first place by popular vote in the annual art show sponsored by Southern Oregon Society of Artists as part of the Jacksonville jubilee. The ex hibit, held in the Jacksonville library, attracted about 500 visitors from all over Oregon and several other states. Second place in the popular vote went to Mrs. Elizabeth Sheffield, Rogue River, for her oil painting of the old Wimer covered bridge. Mrs. Ada An drews, Gold Hill, won third place for a still life entitled "Roses." Other paintings which scored high in the voting were "Under the Cottonwoods," another work of Mrs. Johnson; "This Old House," a pastel by Mrs. Ruby Twedell, Medford: "Minthom Bridge," another oil work of Mrs,. Sheffield and Mountain Reflections," an oil by Harry Marx, Medford. Of special interest was an old painting of a spray of roses entered for exhibit only by Mrs. Pearl Whitney of Jacksonville. It was painted by Sadie DeBoy of Gold Hill when she was a student at the old St. Mary's academy in 1894 and for many years was stored away in a barn. Holes in the canvas are thought to have been made by the shot from a child's small gun. The artist died in 1896. Among those who registered at the snow were visitors from Illinois, Minnesota, Pennsyl vania, Arizona, Florida and New Jersey. Clinton Smith was show chair man. Officers of the artists' group are Dr. E. O. Muhs, Camp White, president; Mrs. Andrews, Gold Hill, vice-president; Mrs. Gean Neece, Gold Hill, secre tary and Mrs. Ann Brereton, Medford, publicity chairman. Baptist Women At House Party . Mrs. Ethyl W. Brown, Mrs. Si D. Earhart and Mrs. Lucile Anderson, members of Eastwood Baptist chilrch In Medford, wera among more than 200 Oregon Baptist women registered for the annual house party of the Oregon Baptist convention on the Linfield college campus in McMinnville last week. Speakers for the sessions were national and local Baptist wom en leaders and missionaries. Guests were housed in Linfield dormitories and meals were served in the college commons. Auguil 8. 1956 Women Golfers Are Guests for Play, Luncheon Women golfers of Rogue Val ley Country club entertained women players from Reames Country club, Klamath Falls, Bayside club of Eureka and Ar eata and Del Norte club of Cres cent City, Calif., on August 2. Play was in the morning, with luncheon following. Score prizes went to Mrs. Belle Schenck for a low gross score of 86; to Mrs. S. Tuny Bullis for a low net of 75; Mrs. Robert Sproat, Klamath Falls, for a low net of 77 and to Mrs. Morris Thorpe for a low gross of 85. Mrs. S. A. Peter, Eureka, and Mrs. William Speer, Crescent City, tied for low net of 84. Mrs. C. B. Collins announced that the next Willamette Valley Southern Oregon tournament will be in Bend August 15, and those wishing to participate in it were asked to sign up by Au gust 9. George Harington, club man ager, spoke about plans being made for the annual Southern Oregon Golf tournament, saying entries must be made before August 15. Women golfers will help with the hole-in-one and putting contests which will be held in connection with the La bor day tournament. A buffet luncheon is planned for all mem bers of the Women's Golf asso ciation, their guests, women con testants and all wives of contest ants. Reservations should be made previous to that time.
