Mrs. Subbagh said she escaped from her 27-year-old husband Badul Jebbar Subbagh, only after a hair-raising four-day run ning legal and physical battle in which the American consul in Baghdad was slugged by an Arab mob. She called it a "nightmarish ending" to the romance which blossomed in Seattle where she worked for an airlines company and Subbagh was a student at the College of Puget Sound. Doubts Marriage Legal ' They were married in Palo Alto in 1953, but Mrs. Subbagh said today she was no longer certain that the marriage was legal. "He led me to believe he was a Christian, and we were mar ried in a Methodist church," the woman said. "I don't believe the church would have performed the ceremony if they had known he was a Moslem. I'm not sure the marriage was legal.' Mrs. Subbagh said her hus band attempted to retain cus tody of their light-complexioned son, who will be two years old next month. But, she said, she took the child and fled from Iraq with the help of U.S. of ficials in that country and a series of Iraqi court orders. "I am going to Palo Alto as soon as possible," she declared. "I will have to go to work, al though goodness knows what I shall do. I don't want to marry anyone again, certainly not a Moslem." Mrs. Subbagh said she went to Baghdad with her husband and son 10 months ago to meet his parents. Lired Lik Arab "His family wanted me to live like an Arab," she said. "They have no consideration or respect for women. An Arab wife is like a servant or slave. "Women eat by themselves. My husband at least ate with me, although his family didn't like it. But he would go off and leave me. I was forced to live with his folks, and it didn't work out at all. i 'I had to sit on the floor and i eat with my hands. It was dirty. I can't live that Way. I 'There is no comparison with America. We had fights I mean ; physical fights. He hit me, but I never hit back. A woman does not hit a man there." She said a knockdown drag- Around Hollywood By ALINI MOSBY United Press Correspondent Hollywood (U.R) A movie in which a beautiful blonde pa raded about in a transparent black lace ne gligee and a white cat on her shoulder finally may be released 28 years late. The picture was the ill-fated "Queen Kelly," made i n 1 Q9ft T t starred Gloria Swanson, Walter Byron and the blonde Seena Owen. The colorful director, Eric Von Stroheim, began the film as a si lent in 1928. Then sound came in a new version was started. Numerous directors were hired and fired and the $1,000,000 movie never made it to the the- Aline Motor Big Church Houses Service Once Yearly Middleton, Wis. (U.R) Only once a year the big white church on the hill comes back to life. The fine structure is empty on all days of the year including Sundays but one. In 1852 104 years ago the church was organized as the First German Evangelical Lu theran Church. In 1947 the congregation decided to join with St. Luke's Lutheran Church. The congregation, however, resolved to keep the old church, to maintain it, and once a year have a service in it. aters. ' This "delayed action" record even beats Howard Hughes' "Jet Pilot," an air epic made six years ago with John Wayne and Janet Leigh that never has seen the light of the popcorn palaces.; But Miss Swanson, now in Paris, is considering making a new ending to "Queen Kelly" and releasing it a quarter of a century later. Recently she had scouts track down her original costars, Byron (now doing little theater work and living in near by Long Beach) and Miss Owen (now a TV writer). "Miss Swansons representa tive phoned to know if I was available, but what could we do now? We'd all look a little dif ferent if she shot a new ending," laughed Miss Owen. Hours Extended The movie, she said, took two years, off and on. to shoot. In those pre-union days Von Stro heim had the actors on the set at 7:30 a.m. and often didn't finish until 3 or 4 the next morning. Miss Owen remembers she was starred in a bathtub scene. And for many sequences she wore that black lace night dress with skin-colored tights underneath to give the impression she was nude. On her shoulder perched the white cat. ' Miss Owen doesn't think mo dern censors will play over this 1928 story of a country girl (Miss Swanson) in love with a wild prince because, "Some modern love scenes I've seen are pretty fiery." Finally Got Son Mrs. Subbagh said she fled to the American consulate and then returned to get her son only to learn that Subbagh had hidden him. She said she accompanied the American consul and three po licemen who met Subbagh on the street. A fight broke out and the consul was struck dur ing a confused melee involving policemen and bystinders. The California woman finally got her son Sunday morning. She flew to Basrah, Iraq. Mrs. Subbagh said her hus band had her passport, so she had to get a new one. She sold her jewelry to raise money. American officials also ad vanced her money, she said.
