Juvenile Detention
Home Discussed at
Roundtable Meeting
Mrs. Kay C'rowell. director of
tbn Jackson county juvenile of-:
f;ce, discussed plans for the i
county's new juvenile detention i
bnme yesterday at the Jackson j
County Chamber of Commerce ;
roundtable at the Jackson hotel.
.Mrs Crowell. director of the
Juvenile department since Aug
ust, 1952, said she accepted the;
position here because of the rhal-
lense in operating a juvenile j
office without a detention home.
She came to Meriford from Stock
ton. Calif.
The first step in procuring a
detention home, she said, was to!
gain the support of the com-j
munity. After Jackson county!
-oted 3-1 in favor of a deten-j
ion home. Mrs. Crowell explain-1
ad. county taxes were raised
iast yar tn finance the home.
fttii Cost
To'al cost of the building, she ;
iBiid, will be $63.0(10. The deten-1
tion home will have a capacity
( 12 children, eight boys and j
four girls, she pointed out.
Another $25,000 is being spent;
on an annex to be added which
will provide offices and a court-
Republican Group
Would Dump Nixon :
Ventura. Calif. OJ P The '
Republican League of California,
has warned that California will
go Democratic if Vice President
Richard M. Nixon runs for re
election. !
Albert Levitt, president of the
local group, disclosed Monday:
thai the organization will sup-j
port Harold E. Slassen in an at- i
lemnt to keen Nixon, a native!
Cf California, off the 11)56 ballot.
The league, however, is not
major statewide GOP organi
sation but the action could lead
to other California groups tak
ing a viand in the controversy.
Levitt in a telegram ' Sta?
n declared:
"Your imposition to Vice Pres
ident Nixon is proper and justi
fied. If the Republican party
oominates Nixon for vice presi
dent. California will go Demo
cratic in the November election.
rooni for county juvenile of
ficers, she said. William Seibert
of Meriford is architect for pro
ject, she said.
Mrs. Crowell explained the
most important consideration
they had in designing the home
was to make it home-like rather
than into a jail, but still provide
security measures so the children
could not run away. She said
children up to th-jr IRth birth
day will be eligible for admit
tance. Children will ho kept
there not more than 10 or 11
days she said, while awaiting
court action.
Mrs. Crowell pointed out that
children will not be kept in the
detention home to be punished
but because they have gotten
beyond parental control or be
cause the communtiy has be
come antagonistic toward them.
Allocated Land
She said the detention home
has been allocated about two
acres of land behind the Foot
lighter's theater on the old fair
grounds. The detention will include a
fenced-in plavground. a recrea
tion room, kitchen, dining room
and separate rooms for all the
children with a toilet and wash
basin m each one. Mrs. Crowell
added. There will also be a wait
ing room for the court and de
tention area, a living room, bed
room and bathroom for parents,
and a judge's chambers, sh.e said.
The detention home will be
staffed by a man and women
and a ichcf crew with living
quarters provided for them, Mrs.
Crowell said. Pay for the couple
will be about S4.500 a year, she
said. Operating expenses for the
detention home will be about
S16.500 annually, she concluded.
