UP' Prison of ficials today attempted to learn why more than 30 "hardened'' convicts broke their legs with sledge hammers in a demonstra tion against working conditions at the Rocky Quarry State Pris on for incorrigibles here. State Director of Corrections .lack Forrester said 36 prisoners, including seven Negroes, used ten-pound sledge hammers with rocks serving as anvils as they tried to break their legs in an attempt to escape from the hard work at the quarry. A prison doctor said that all but "four or five" of the pris oners managed to fracture their legs, and at least ten of them suffered from compound breaks. The injured convicts were i l ushed by ambulances and a bus j nearly 200 miles late Monday 8 I night to the Reidsville State 4 i Prison which has better hospital ; facilities. s i Forrester said all the prison 4 ers involved in the bloody pro test were maximum security in mates or incoirigibles.
