Dr I; L. Brofmsn reported that in tiie last 57 case; in which he and his eroup operat ed on the heart of a man who had suffered a coronary t h r o m b osis they had not lost a single case. This re u ith the Beck i operation is interesting for two reasons. One is that it is good to know thai something can be don-" for those persons who. aft er a heart attack suffer much from pain and disability: and it is goori to know tiiat commonly a man who has had a bad heart attack can come through a se vere operation on his heart. This means that many persons with a bad heart need not be too fearful when they are forced I to have an operation on gall-. stones, or cancer. j Naturally, not all the persons ! who have had a heart attack j can .-tand an operation. Every-' thing depends on what we phy-: sicians call their "cardiac re serve." To illustrate: Some men. after a coronary thrombosis, can waik along the street about as rapidly as they did before, with out much shortness of breath, and without pain. A less fortu nate man, with a poor cardiac reserve, will get short of breath and may get pain on walking slowly, or going up stairs, or even as he sits quietly in his chair at home. He may get dis tress if he tries to lie flat at niht. In such case, we physi cians say that the mans rope is short, and this is far more significant for his future than is the appearance of his electro cardiograms. Often in these cases a good heart specialist hardly looks at the electrocardiograms. What he wants to know is how far the man can walk without getting pain or distress. The heart is a pump, anci one can judge best of lis efficiency by finding out how well and comfortably it pumps when put under strain. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for information or to attempt to diagnose by mail. Willi three children, the oldest only ten. I have my hands full running our home, but I would very much like to fit into the community and have some social life. My husband knows some people here, but I do not. He, as a matter of fact, decided on this place for our home because a few of his business associates live here. It is plain to me. how ever, that the wives of his set do not look on me with favor, but my husband insists that I am just imagining this and f&at I should take the initiative and invite people to our home. I can't help noticing that some of Fred's associates have called on us, but alone, without their wives. When I mention this. Fred argues that their wives are probably iust as busy as I am and waiting for a formal invitation. I am very unhappy about this and cannot abide the thought that Fred will let me havi any social life that is not ba-idd on his circle, in which there is clearly no room for me. FRED Blanche's real reason for rcfusinc to invite these people is her scl "-consciousness, due to her feeling that our home is not up to the standards of the community in furnishings. I recently got a substantial pro motion in my firm and feel that my prospects would be best if I lived in this community, but I cannot afford a home with new decorator furniture and furnishincs. We must make the old things do for some years to conie. I can't see Imw Blanche can feci rejected when the wives have not met her vet. She should invite them and give them a chance THE COUNCIL Fred has obviouily over-reached himself ' in insisting on ' keeping up the ' Joneses" when neither his fin ; ances nor his wife's dispostion would permit. He is wrong in insisting that his wife's apprehensions are totally baseless. If the men have been calling without their wives, Blanche has ample reason to be fearful of being rejected by the wives. Fred would be wise to con cede that his wife's position may have some substance behind it. i Perhaps it would make good ; sense for him to sound out some of his friends by asking them I to help him decide on the most ! suitable date for an at-home party. If the men proved eva I sive on this point, he would have good reasons to decide that his wife's fears are well-founded. Certainly, he could not force the issue if it became clear that the women in this circle, for whatever reason, were unwill ing to accept his wife. The last ! thing he should do is to dis i courage her from making some j friends on her own. To do so would be to pile mistake upon mistake, into a tragic pyramid.
