Miller and son, Russell, were business visit ors to Klamath Falls one day las week. Russell is laid up with a ; broken arm which he received in a wreck July 3 r.ear Chemult. Idaho, after spending a month with her sisters. Mrs. Zorah Wiley and Mrs. James Whipple and families. After spending some days in a Grants Pass hospital, Mrs. Mae Shults is recuperating at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. C. Cummings. at Keno, Ore. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rhoten of Ft Bragq. Calif., spent the week end at the home of their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rhoten of Wimer and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Miller of Rogue River. Mr. and .Mrs. Lloyd Smith and Bob liollms were Ashland visit ors Sunday where they attend ed the Montana picnic held in the Ashland park. Mrs. Marie Lerg will return to her home in Los Angeles, Calif . this weekend after spend ing the past two months with her sister, Mrs. Walter Shock, who has been ill and in a Med ford hospital. FIRE DEBT REPAID Salem, Mass. (U.R' After 42 years, the great Salem fire is officially out. Mayor Francis X. Collins recently burned the last SI. 000 loan note to show that Salem has paid off the last penny of the millions it bor rowed for its rehabilitation. The fire in 1914 destroyed 1,800 buildings and left 18,000 persons homeless. Former Ashland Man Is Found Guilty Arthur King Wilson, former resident of Ashland, president of the Coast Redwood company of Areata. Calif , has been found guilty on six charges of wil fully evading the payment of taxes withheld from wages of employees during the year 1952. According to the internal rev enue service. Wilson's corpora tion withheld income and social ! security taxes of $118,000 from April to December. 1952, and ! failed to pay the money to the' director of internal revenue. S Ralph C. Granquist, Portland, district director of the service, said this was the first of its kind : prosecuted under the criminal statutes in which failure to pay ! withholding taxes was involved, j Granquist stated that the in j ternal revenue service will now ; begin to employ criminal sanc i tions against other employers I who wilfully fail to turn over taxes withheld from employees' wages. Wilson will be sentenced Aug. 2. Maximum penalty he could receive is a sentence of 30 years in jail and a S60.000 fine. Salem U.R; Farm Woodland owners grossed SI. 830. 511 dur ing the last fiscal year. Grange Notes Phoenix Grange Phoenix Grange met Tuesday evening July 24. Master Melvin Lattie called the meeting to or der at 8 p.m. Visitors present were Mr. and Mrs. Wroe. newcomers to Jack son county and formerly of Reedsport and members of Smith River Grange: Mrs. Violet Herman, Mrs. Lena Foster, Mrs. Lallie Cotter and son. Everet Cotter, all from Grants Pass and members of Rogue River Valley Grange. Mrs. Olin Poe arranged the display table of antiques and relics and gave a short history of some of the articles. H E C. chairman Velma John son thanked all who assisted with the S O S. dinner served by the Phoenix Grange recently. It was reported Mrs. Walter Grochocki was now home from the hospital and was soon to have the cast removed from her ankle and a lighter one substi tuted. Also it was reported Mrs. Ar thur Diedrich had had a light heart attack, and that Cal Lusk had been quite ill but was im proving. Lusk is a charter mem ber of Phoenix Grange but at present a member of Eagle Point Grange. Mrs. A. O. Floyd, chairman of the Recreation com mittee then presented the mem bers of the Camp White orches tra who played several selec tions. The program for the meeting Aug. 14 will be put on by the Legislative committee, Charles Johnson, chairman. Meeting was adjourned at an early hour and refreshments of ice cold watermelon, iced tea and coffee were 'served by the committee the Bert Stancliffs Delmo Sloans, and Arthur Died-richs.
