Venus Now Visible as Star In Morning, Not Evening BY FAY VAN SCHOIACK incrrasinx in brilliance. "What lias happened to the evening flap? It seems to have disappeared," someone remark ed a few days a2u. The "evenins str" aiiuded to is the planet Venus and its daz hn radianre no longer gleams in the t.'.ihi'h' However, the "EodHes of hv. p and beauty" lias nn. hei(!:e a "'morning s'ar" and is visihle low in the eastern heavens just before sun rise, j Inferior Conjunction On June 22. Venus readied inferior con junction, or a post-i lion directly between the earth! and the sun. Due to the greater brilliance of the sun, the planet was rendered invisible to earth dwellers. Moving on in its orbital journey, Venus appears to brigh ten as the angular distance from Old Sol increases. To illustrate what is meant by angular distance, take pencil and paper. Place on the paper a large dot to represent our sun. Around this dot draw three con centric circles. The circle nearest the sun will be the smallest of i tlie three and represents the etiMt of Mrrrv.rv The second i ir 'e. nvtrp fh-tan1 froni tne sun than the first, represents the orbit of Venus. The third and largest circle will be the path j of the earth. Now. place dots to represent the earth and Venus in such a ; way that Venus will be in a direct line between the earth j and the sun. Venus was in this ; position, inferior conjunction, on j June 22, and it can be readily i understood why the planet was invisible to us. j Daily Movement j Again, place three or four dots j on the orbit of Venus (second circle) to represent the planet in its day by day movement. Draw a straight line from the earth through Venus to the sun. As stated before. Venus is not visible to earth-dwellers when in this position. Draw straight lines from the earth to each one of the dots that represent Venus in i!s jour ney around tiie sun. This shows that the planet is moving to one side of the sun and inhabitants of the earth ca,i view the light ef thp planet with less interfer ence from the sun's greater light. On the fourth of July, Venus rose an hour before the sun but by the end of July, Venus will be visible three hours before sunrise and reaches its greatest brilliancy July 29. Throughout the year 1156 Venus continues to be a morning star. Other Planets How are the other "naked-ee" planet- placed for observation? Jupiter is low in the west at sun set and disappears from view within an hour or so. During the last of August it is too low in the skv for easy observation. About two and one half hours after sunset, the brilliant red light of M.irs becomes noticeable in the southeastern heavens. The 'god of war" ran Vie easily dis tinguished by us reddish hue and st e a d y plow. Mars li a s brightened considerably during the last few weeks and is steadily MPF1I Elusive Mercury is poorly placed ail the month fur observa tion, but it is possible to see it in the evening sky during the very last of July. However, it sets only 4a minutes after the sun. Saturn Visible Saiurn ias mentioned in !ast week s column) is now visible in the south during the evening hours, slightly west, or to the right, of tiie constellation Sco ripn. Of the nine planets compos ing the major portion of. the sun's family. Mercury. Venus. Mars. Jupiter, and Saturn are visible without any sort of optical aid and often are referred to as the "naked-eye" planets. Uranus and Neptune may some times be seen with the help of strong binoculars, but Pluto can only be located through the use of a telsecope. Farming Virgin Land Has Creative Power London iU.R Nikita S. S. Khrushchev has told Soviet farmers that farming virgin land in undeveloped regions of the Soviet Union has creative power equal to a hydrogen bomb, radio Moscow said Friday. Khrushchev, leader of the So viet Communist party, is touring Kazakhstan, primarily a cattle raising country. "Look. now. what good wheat grows here," he told the farmers. "This wheat can be compared with a hydrogen bomb. The dif ference is that the hydrogen bomb has the greatest destruc tive power, whereas the wheat of the virgin land has the great est creative power." Claremont. Calif.
