Land in Soil Bank j
Deadline Today ;
Washington OJ.R) The dead-
line for pulting surplus land in
this year's "soil bank" falls to-'
day.
The Agriculture Department
said Thursday more than 8.000,
000 acres of crop land were
laken out of production by last
week. Farmers will get "S164,
000.473 from the government for
not producing crops on the land.
The department's goal for the
!3.i6 soil bank program was 8,
500.000 to 15.000.000 acres.
Acreage deposited through July
20 almost reaches the minimum
: goal.
Under the acreage reserve
program, farmers can earn pay
ments for cutting production be
low government acreage allot

I Slum Clearance
Programs Less Costly
Milwaukee (U.R1 The fact
that slum clearance programs
cost the taxpayers less than let
ting the slums spread was empha
sized by George E. Heider, super
visor of the Milwaukee health
department housing division.
Heider, writing in Govern
ment Service, a magazine pub
lished by the Milwaukee Govern
ment Service league, said that in
one of the buildings he inspected
he found a widow and seven chil
dren living in one room.
He said there were 37 school
children living in that building.
He pointed out that it would
take a complete schoolroom, with
all the accompanying pxpenses,
to care for the children from just
the one building.
He said a complete grade
school would have to be provided
by the taxpayers if there were
eight of these houses.
Heider said that the owner of
this building paid city property
taxes of only S456 a year, hardly
enough to provide for the educa
tion of the children living in the
building.
Besides school costs, there are
other items like fire and police
protection, refuse disposal and
health services.
"How many houses like this
could Milwaukee afford?'' Heid
er asked.

jChief Justice Will
Make Visit to India
Washington U.R Chief
Justice Earl Warren has accept
ed an invitation to visit India
next month.
The Indian Embassy made the
announcement Thursday night
and Stale Department officials
confirmed it.
The department could not say
how long the visit would last but
a spokesman said the main pur
pose of the trip ywas for the
chief justice to talk with justices
of India's Supreme Court.
Mr. Warren will be accom
panied by his wife. They will
visit Bombay. Calcutta. New
Delhi and points of interest
throughout the country.
Warren's decision to visit
India undoubtedly had enthus
iastic White House approval
since it presumably would tend
to ease any Indian disappoint
ment over the collapse of plans
of Indian Premier Jawaharlal
Nehru to visit this country.
