Epileptics ?!ow Can Sdeiy Have Children St. Louis UPi Epileptic women, for whom pregnancy long has ben considered dang erous, are now bring assured that they can marry and have children with safety. Two leading neurologists made this favorable rfpnrt here to the 8th annual meeting of i ho Ameri can Academy o Neurology, based on a 15-mnnth study at the University of Virginia's medical school. Seiures in pn "gnant women, can bu serious, ..iid lr. Cary G. Suter and Walt-, r U. Klir.gman, because they produce generalized convulsions which kill or seri ously injure the unborn child and often have disastrous con sequences for the mother as well. Now, however, seizure - con trolling drugs and improve treat ment offer encouragement for the female epileptic. Further more, they said, a more "en lightened" society attaches far less stigma to the disease, which afflicts an estimated 1.500,000 persons in the U. S. Dr. Suter said that if the preg nant epileptic woman places her self under the care and super vision of a competent neurolo gist or other physician and "strictly observes his orders," there is little danger and "no reason why she should not give birth to a normal, healthy baby." Better Nurses Needed, Association Declares Milwaukee (U.R; A Minn eapolis counsel for the Minn esota Nurses' Association says we don't need more nurses but we need better ones. The number of nurses has been increasing more rapidly than the number of hospital beds, accord ing to attorney Lee Loevinger. He told tiie iscoriMn State Nurses' Assn. convention that the big job of the profession now is to raise the professional stand ards of nursing. Higher standards, he said, would result in better trained nurses at higher pay than pre sent .salaries, which he termed inadequate.
