Arizona land commissioner and that State's 14th will. -.-. testified Wednes day Arizona had tried to limit the use of its dwindling under ground water supply through well and pumping regulations. Ernst said a 1943 law made it mandatory for farmers pumping in critical areas to register their wells. Asked in cros-examination how much of a staff he had to police the regulations. Pa., tried for three hours to get: the landing gear of his jet fight er down over Turner Air Force Base here but failed. Kondracki finally brought his F-84F in on its belly and Air Force officials said the plane was barely scratched. The base fire department had spread liquid foam on the run- way and Kondracki skidded the jet In on its wing tanks, vert ing damage to the fuselage. Stassen threw a bombshell into the GOP political campaign by announcing he will fight to get the vice presidential nomination for Governor Christian A. Herter of Massachusetts instead of Richard Nixon. President Eisenhower, on his arrival home in Washington from Panama (left), has only a brief, perfunctory handshake and "hello" for Stassen, who was in the welcoming group. The President went out of his way to give a warm, cordial greeting to Nixon (right) and hold a plane-side chat with the Vice President. White House Press Secy. James C. Hagerty told newsmen that he is standing firm on his prediction that Nkon will be renominated as the President's running mate. Shaw was a tobacco hater, tee totaler, veceterian and atheist. Casserley smokes, drinks eats meat and is a practicing Catholic. Shaw's old Victorian mansion was sold to Casserley after an appeal for 250.000 pounds (S700. COO) to turn it into a literary shrine brought in only 400 pounds i$1.120 in 11 months. and decorated for bravery in World War I. hanged himself in despair after years of vain at'emp's to cot a war pension. Crest of Pankeyville. 111., is tile kind of farmer a news paper reporter likes to see bring in oversized eggs. Crest recently brought in four whoppers to Timotheus Turner, of the Harrisburg Daily Register. One egg weighed 4!2 ounces and measured 7!s by 8 inches: two of the eggs were four ounces each and the fourth 3Vi ounces. Crest told Timotheus to take the eggs -home with him. The reporter did and, when prepar ing an omelet that night, found three yolks in the biggest egg and two in each of the others. some of them a century old ! surrounding them like a spi der'.s web. i The civil servants' case is that they would get in trouble u itii ' their superiors if they did not comply strictly with the regula tions in a country that worships the written word. Only thing to do appears to be to kill most of liie regulations . and rewrite others drastically a job that would lake any gov ernment years and would run into dozens of pitfalls. As it was. many Italians were trying to get along by simply ignoring the regulations. A few instances of red tape in recent months included: Verona. Jan. 17 Police dis covered Mrs. Anna Antevere, now 78 and living in a poorhouse, disobeyed a routine order to re port to police headquarters in 1937. Police waived their legal right to arrest her but sent her for trial on charges of contempt. Rome, Oct. 3, 1955 Roberto Pancalli won his fifth form cer tificate at the age of 81. Pancalli had to produce the certificate under new regulations to renew the license of his car-driving school. No record of his original fifth form certificate could be found because the school he had attended as a boy had ceased to exist.
