SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, July IS. 1956 APPLEGATE-JACKSONVILLE Families Gather for Event By HELGA MITCHELL Applegate -Jacksonville A potluck picnic dinner was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mansel Milam last Sunday in honor of their son Edward's birthday and his going into the Navy. Mrs. George Riggens' and Miss Virginia Neal's birthdays were also celebrated. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Ted Rundle and their four sons, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Stephens and their boys, Mr. and Mrs. Al Blumreich, Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Dewey, Mr. and Mrs. George Riggens of Klamath Falls, Miss Virginia Neal, Jerry Neal, Ken ' Morely of Eugene, Ore., Miss Pat Bails, and Miss Carolyn Mc Beth of Jacksonville. After din ner, George Riggens and Mansel Milam took the young folks swimming in the Applegate river at Cantrall's place. Mrs. Dora Krouse of Apple gate and her daughter, Mrs. Dor othy Howard of Portland, drove east recently to attend the grad uation of Mrs. Krouse 's grand son, Pete Howard, who received a master of fine arts degree at Yale university in New Haven, Conn. Howard will be teaching in Yale this year. Mrs. Krouse and Mrs. Howard spent 10 days at Sacanbaga, N. Y.,and five days at New York City. Mrs. Etta Brown of Apple gate is a medical patient at Sacred Heart hospital. The Wilfred Pearsons attend ed a family reunion picnic in the redwoods near Healdsburg on July 4. It is an annual event held in honor of Mrs. Pearson's father, Benjamin Nichols, now in his 92nd year. Four genera tions were represented among the 23 people who attended this event. The Pearsons also visited in Davis, Calif., and were guests of Miss Clare McGee. The Pear sons' daughter, Anne, 4, remain ed in California to stay with numerous cousins in Walnut Creek, Stockton, Palo Alto and Santa Rosa. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Buck re cently received a. surprise visit from old school friends, Mr. and Mrs. William Attabury of Chico, Calif., whom they hadn't seen in approximately 40 years. After their visit here, the Attaburys drove to Merlin, Ore., to visit his uncle. Friends visiting Mrs. Jennie Herslof of Applegate last week were Mr. and Mrs. Redge Oliver of Glendale, Calif. The Olivers were here on their vacation. Mrs. Otis Buck and Mrs. Frank Mitchell visited Mrs. Anna Cater and Mrs. A. Langley who reside on Hillcrest rd. in Medford last Monday. While in Medford, Mrs. Buck and Mrs. Mitchell also paid a visit to Patty Rose on the Westside shopper program, and Mrs. Buck picked up her numerous prizes that she had recently won on radio pro grams. Members of the Ruch Live stock club attended the Sis-Q fair held at Bellview last Thurs day. Ed Fossen and Don Gettling accompanied the group. Another grandmother has been added to the list of "Apple gate Nannies." Mrs. Al Blum reich received a phone call from her daughter in San Francisco last Friday, informing her of the birth of her first granddaughter. Mrs. Earl Hvall returned home from her trip to Tacoma, Wash., last Friday. Recent visitors a-t the Jack O'Brien residence were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stewart of Rich mond, Calif. Mrs. Stewart is Jack O'Brien's cousin. Another visitor at the O'Brien residence is Mrs. Stella O'Brien of Rich mond, Calif. Mrs. Charles (Catherine) Kim ball of Jacksonville, daughter of Mrs. Clyde Smith, recently left for an indefinite stay at the Oregon State Tuberculosis hos pital, Route 4, Box 28, Salem, Ore. Friends who wish to write to Mrs. Kimball may contact her at that address. Applegate was represented at the recent Red Cross meeting in the courthouse at Medford by the Rev. Earl Best, Mrs. Curtis Gerheardt, M.-s. Dora Krouse and Mi. Fr-nk Mitchell. Recent visitors at the Ray Of- fenbacher residence were Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Henderson of Areata, Calif. Mrs. Harry Foster entered the Mitchell Sanitarium in Jackson ville this week. Mrs. Ruby Nelson of Jackson ville recently broke her arm and is staying with her son, Keith Nelson of Applegate, until she has recuperated. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Bishop and their two daughters recently left for Flagstaff, Ariz., to attend the funeral of their son, Stephen Bishop, who was killed in the recent plane crash in that vicin ity. WATSON Shady Cove-Trail The newly formed organization of business people in the Upper Rogue area, the Rogue Wonderland associa tion, will be host to the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Greeters committee Thursday, July 26, at 8:15 a.m. at Un canny Canyon on Highway 62 above Trail. Local business own ers will be Introduced and in terviewed. It is hoped that many business people will be present and help make this event a suc cess. . The association, formed just this year, has already accomp lished a great deal in many ways toward better advertising and publicizing of this area as well as campaigning for better roads and better facilities for the tour ist coming in here. A number of out-of-state people, many of them from Cal ifornia but others coming from Washington, New Mexico, Del aware, Pennsylvania and Illin ois, have been recent visitors at resorts and motels along the Upper Rogue. Riffles on the Rogue, a pop ular resort, recently was sold by Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Yundt to Mr. and Mrs. George McDermott and family, of Santa Monica, Calif. The McDermotts assumed man agement on July 12. They are; parents of a teenage son and daughter who will attend high school here." The Yundts plans to take a good rest and are moving to their house, formerly occupied by The Rev. and Mrs. Clark next to the Harrises near Casey State park. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sawyer and daughter, Sandy, made a fishing trip to Odell Lake over the weekend. Attending a lecture given by Mr. and Mrs. Pace of Los Angeles at the Frank Fagalde home July 6 on Nutrilite, food supplement, were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tullis, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Silver, Mrs. Paul Davis and Mrs. Thelma Reinning and the Fagaldes. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Towle of Oakland, Calif., are visiting with Mrs. Towel's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Strother of Shady Cove. The Towles own the former Bert Williams home on Old Ferry rd. between the Tom Teppers' and the Frank Flinks'. Mrs. Alice K Augustus of San Francisco, is visiting her daugher and family, Mr. and Mis. John Wit of Shady Cove She has not been able to visit her daugher for 10 years. Susan Lee Galvin of La Can ada, Calif., is spending her va cation with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Wyles Berry of expects to be stationed closer to home in the future. Visiting Mrs. Anna Scott of Little Applegate is her sister, Mrs. Raymond Phillips of Eu gene, Ore. Mrs. Phillips, who hasn't been in this area for seven years, arrived . here last Tues day night. A recent visitor at the Her bert DeVos residence on Ster ling creek was George Miller, a former neighbor who is in the Navy and stationed at Belling ham, Wash. From here, he went to Los Angeles to purchase a motorcycle, and will travel to South Dakota to visit his par ents. Gordon DeVos, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert DeVos, a fireman apprentice in the Navy, was home1 on a visit recently. In August, he will board the USS Ajax and go to Japan. Miss Lillian Paulsen of Har lan, Iowa, is visiting at the Arion Christensen residence. Miss Paul sen is vacationing from her sec retarial job with a telephone company. Mrs. Robert P. Sorber of the Star Ranger station has her mother, Mrs. Herbert of Farm ington, Calif., visiting her. Mrs. Herbert came from Corvallis where she has been visiting other relatives. ' Motorists traveling up the new highway toward "Top o' the Hill" last Sunday in 102 degree temperature could hardly be lieve their eyes when they read the sign by the side of the road reading, "ICE." The Phillip Hansons who re side at the trailer court at Mc Kee bridge recently had a din ner party in honor of Hanson's birthday. Guests from Medford and Central Point attended the event. The Frank Prestons have had California house guests and the men spent the week end trout fishing in the back country. Rural Reflections: Undaunted by civilization, wildlife still con tinues to heckle residents in the Applegate area. A bad humored bear recently stomped into the front yard of the Harry Davises at Beaver Creek in the middle of the night, and took off a fence post at the point of entry and another at the point of exit. A porcupine recently invaded the garden of Mrs. Morris Byrne and dined on her choice roses and other treasured items, until Mrs. Byrne, with the aid of her hus band, trapped the varmint. Last Tuesday morning, a racoon which had been feasting on ap proximately 14 large sized gold fish in Mrs. Frank P. Dutton's fish pond came to the end of his days in an electric trap set by the Duttons. . Berrys' Rogue Woods, trail. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McNaugh tcn of San Rafael, Calif., spent a few days visiting with her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cross of Shady Cove. Several California couples are spending long vacations at Cal-ifornia-on-the-Rogue. Among them are Mr. and Mrs. Dan Watson of South Pasadena, Mr. and Mrs. John Holland of San Francisco and Mr. and Mrs. George Copeland of San Fran cisco. Jan and Pam Hannan of Burns, Ore., are visiting with their aunt, Mrs. Ole Hornseth of Shady Cove. Mr. and Mrs. Phil Motschen bacher of Shady Cove held a farewell party for their son and wife and children, M. Sgt. and Mrs. Bernarad Motschenbacher July 8 at their home in Shady Cove. The Bernard Motschen- bachers and four girls left Sun day for Fairbanks, Alaska, to make their home while he is stationed here" in the Air Force They were driving with their trailer and expect to make the trip in two weeks. Guests present at the party were Mrs. M. Mot- schenbacher's mother, Mrs. Eleanor Waits and her brother, Pat Waits, both of Tulelake, Calif., her sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Woody Price, also of Tulelake, Mrs. Motschen hacher's son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Stewart of Eagle Point, and another son. Merle Stewart of Medford. A general meeting of the Shady Cove-Trail Fire district has been set for Monday, July 23, at 8 p.m. at the Shady Cove School gym. Purpose of the meeting will be to discuss cur rent affairs of the distict. It is hoped that everyone will try to attend this meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Kelley of Shady Cove have had company from out of town recently Guests have been Mr. and Mrs. Een Jantzer and children Elaine and Steven of Azalea and Mrs, Kelley's nephew and family, Mr and Mrs. Stanley Jantzer and children, Johnny, JoAnne and Mark of Areata, Calif. The Stan ley Jantzers attended the Nye family ' reunion on Sunday at Diamond Lake. Mrs. Jantzer was Irene Nye before her marriage. The Shady Cove-Trail Lady Lions met July 5 in the down stairs playroom at the home of Mrs. Florence Fagalde of Shady Cove with the newly elected president, Mrs. Athel Dudley, presiding. It was agreed that the meetings will be held regularly from now on at the Fagaldes Mrs. Dudley announced her com mittees for the coming year. They are constitution and "by laws, Carolyn Chubb and Joyce Spain, budget and finance, Dor othy Harmon and Rose Kelley; hostess and entertainment; Ethel Goode, Charlotte Croucher and Lorraine Jantzer; historian, Rose Kelley and Alma Davis; pub licity, Rose Kelley and Alma Davis; initiation, Viola Mullen end Alvana Elrod; ways and means, Frankie Sheppard, Mar tha Olson and Alma Davis; sun shine, Florence Fagalde and Carolyn Chubb. Plans for a fall style show were discussed. It will be held Sept. 6 at the Shady Cove school gym. Mrs. Ruth Sanford spent a vacation recently in Sacramento, Calif., where she saw her daugh ter, Anne Sanford, appear in the Sacramento Light Opera as sociation's production of "Okla homa". ,'. ' The home of the Rico Bert oglios just off the River rd. in Shady Cove, has been sold to Mr. and Mrs. Charles McCann who will make their home there. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Alex ander of Hollywood, Calif., va cationed in the Upper Rogue area the first part of July. The Alexanders own property in the south part of Shady Cove and plan to make their home here upon retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Bill McConnell of North Hollywood, Calif., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Fred Fred Kindschi at their summer home across from Berrys' Rogue Woods. Both McConnell and Kindschi work for Warner Brothers in Hollywood. Mr. and Mrs. George Scott of Shady Cove are expecting their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Myers of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a visit soon. Mr. and Mrs. Don Doepke and children, Jim, Bobby and Cynthia of Anaheim Calif., spent their vacation visiting with Mrs. Doepke's sister and family, Mr. : and Mrs. Harry Casebier of Elk ! Creek, Trail. Jolene Casebier I returned with them to see her j aunt and family in Anaheim. ! Mr. and Mrs. Charles Golaher j of Rockford, Michigan, spent a j week visiting with Mrs. Golah er's aunt and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Pfeifer of Shady Cove. They made a fishing trip to Diamond Lake. Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Minter and children. Gary and Bobbie, of Long Beach, Calif., are visit ing with Mi?. Minter's sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Shep pard and daughter, Carole, of Shady Cove. Mrs. Flossie Smith of Los Angeles has been visiting her friends, the Joe Waltz family of Shady Covi. Mrs. Smith ac companied Dorothy when she re turned from her vacation trip to Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Dunham and son, Steve of Norwalk, Calif., vacationed with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Henderson of Trail. All Catholics in the Shady Cove-Trail-Prospect area are in vited to a parish picnic to be held following church services at the Shady Cove school gym today. Mass is held at 10 a.m. and immediately following those attending the picnic will go to the George Jess ranch at Eagle Point. Coffee wil be furnished but everyone bring their own table services and picnic lunch. Our Lady of Fatima club will meet on Thursday, July 19, at the home of Mrs. Ray Morgan of Trail. All Catholic ladies in the area are invited. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Frethiem of Pomona. Calif., have been visiting with their friends, Mr and Mrs. Frank Proctor of Shady Cove. Mrs. Mirtie Stafford of Belle ville, Kan., has been visiting with her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Stafford of Trail. She expects to spend the sum mer in the area and will also visit with her brother and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Moor head of Trail. Mrs. Clyde Staf ford has had her two grand children, Jamie and Mark Bur- dell of Lebanon, Ore., with her for two weeks. Mrs. Walter Turner of Trail was hostess at her home for a meeting and potluck picnic of the Sewing Club that she form erly belonged to in Ashland. Nineteen members and guests were present. The Turners also have had as house guests for several days Mr. and Mrs. Guy Turner and daughter, Yvonne Turner, of Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hilton and children, Pat and Jack of Los Angeles, have been visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chubb and daughter, Susan, of Shady Cove. Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Taylor of Trail have been Mr. and Mrs. Austin Huls of Chino, Calif, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Taylor of Long Beach, Calif. The Shady Cove Rotary club dispensed with the regular din ner meeting . and program at the Mountain View cafe July 12 and instead held a picnic for members, their families and friends at the picnic grounds owned by the Ranald Axtells on Laurelhurst rd. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Turner of Trail were hosts to the mem bers and guests of the Roxy Ann Mineral club of Medford for an outdoor picnic dinner and meeting at their picnic grounds bordering the river at their home at Trail. Approxim ately 60 member and guests were in attendance. Mrs. George Lyon of Rogue River was co hostess for this event. Mr. and Mrs. Phil Motschen bacher of Shady Cove enter tained the members of the Shady Cove Grange and guests for a rjicnic dinner at their home on the river in Edgewood Park July 10. Following the dinner a short meeting of the Shady Cove HEC was held and cards en joyed for the remainder of the evening. Commercial hatcheries in North Dakota produced 90,000 baby chicks in February, 22 per cent more than in February, 1955. Earth Tremor Feft In Portland Section Portland, Ore. (U.PJ An earth tremor recorded on a Portland seismograph as a "very light local" earthquake shook a limited area around Eu gene and Springfield at 5:58 a.m. Saturday. William Geitz, Portland seis mologist, said the tremor ap peared on his charts for about five-and-a-half minutes. Resi dents in an area from the Cal Young road to Gamebird vil lage around Eugene called ra dio stations, newspapers and po lice saying they had felt the tremor.
