It was on June 24 that Miss Margetts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Margetts-, and James Hixon Jr., 22, started back to Salt Lake City from a fishing trip. Apparently it was near mid night that night when the car went out of control, off U.S. Highway 40 near Parley's Sum mit in the Wasatch Mountains east of here, and into a grove j of scrub trees. Jean was trapped under the overturn ed trunk compartment, her legs pinned by a tree and gasoline dripping on her head. She's been hospitalized since, getting the most expert care medical science can provide. Utah is raising money by public suoscnpuon 10 iinance the re covery. She was in a semi-coma when found. It was three days before, as she was fed through the veins and given other shock treatment, that she could do more than show signs of recognizing her mother. Gradually, she"s gained more mental and physical control. She's started feeding herself. Amnesia Possible Miss Margetts has asked some questions of her mother. Only her close relatives and physicians can see her. She has yet to say anything that is known about the fishing trip, the start home, the wreck or Hixon, whom she planned to marry this fall. Doctors suggest that, merciful ly, she has amnesia that blots out that horrible period when she was so close to death. - Newspaper, radio newscasts and mail are still kept from Jean. Experts say the shock of suddenly realizing Hixon is gone and how close she came to going with him might set her back, and she might not be able to stand it. General Employment Up in Coastal States San Francisco (U.R) General employment, excluding domestic and farm workers, in three Pa cific Coast states, reached a new all-time high of 5,427,500 in mid May, the U.S.' Department of Labor reported today. The report said all major in dustries, except mining, con tributed to the April-May ad vance in California, Oregon and Washington. . . In California employment in creased by 46,900 to a total of 4.182,800. Durling (Distributed by Kine Fuhiret Syndicate, Inc.) This department appears to have the attention of quite a few feminine readers who have had considerable matrimonial ex perience. As for example, a New Yorker who says she has been married four times and is the mother of 15 children. Inciden tally, she is currently a career woman. She adds that she still has her schoolgirl figure w-hich she believes is partly due to her love for dancing. Breeding The British turf classic, the Epsom derby was again won this year by a French horse. The thoroughbreds from France are a constant threat in all the great British classics. Even if your wife is not interested in racing there is an angle to this situation that should interest her. The great success of the French breeders is said to be due to their emphasis on the import ance of the mare. The British have centered their great atten tion on the stallion. Incidentally, it is said that in humans the mother is more important in the matter of producing powerful sons. As for example, John L. Sullivan's mother was a tall, strong woman. His father was short and not especially strong. So They Say Libra (Sept. 24-Oct 23) women are born actresses. If they don't act professionally they act to get their way with their husbands or impress people. The woman who habitually makes a dra matic entrance at a party is usually a Libra. Or, so say the stargazers. Asking Queries from clients. Q. Are there any successful professional race horse trainers who are col lege graduates? A. Yes, sir. Quite a few. For example, John Gaver, Greentree stable is a Princeton man. J. B. Bond, lead ing New Jersey trainer, is a John Hopkins graduate. "Big Jim" Healey is a Georgetown alumnus. "Hack" Ross is a uni versity of. California graduate and a former football star. Inci dentally, a top thoroughbred trainer can earn from 550,000 to $100,000 a year. So why should not university trained men be interested? Q. Are you familiar with a poem titled "We Must Have Weather"? A. All I know of the poem you may have in mind is as follows: Whether it rain . Or whether it snow We must have weather Whether or no. Variety What is the widest variety of dishes you have been offered on a breakfast mnu? Can you top that of 125 different dishes of fered on the breakfast menu of the' Holland-American liner New Amsterdam? Breakfast is my favorite meal. When viewing a morning meal menu I always select a breakfast from it. From the New Amsterdam card I se lected a light breakfast of prunes, oatmeal, ham and eggs, lyonnaise potatoes, raspberry jam, corn muffins, buckwheat cakes and a pot of coffee. Horses and Women Trainers ' of currently active thoroughbreds are still whining Disc Jockey Charged With Wife's Murder Pittsburgh U.R) Police charged disc jockey Wally Dick son with the murder of his wife Thursday, partially on the basU of evidence supplied by the sus pect's five-year-old son. Jeffrey Dickson told detectives his father was home when he heard two shots fired the -night his mother, Nancy, 26, was bludgeoned and then shot in the chest and forehead. The balding radio performer, 30, who sobbed hysterically at his wife's coffin Thursday, was taken into custody by Allegheny County Coroner William D. Mc Clelland and held without bond for murder pending an inquest. "All facts in the case point to Dickson as the slayer," Henry W. Pieper, chief of county detec tives, declared. and whimpering about their charges being assigned weights as high as 130 pounds. Exter minator, gallant thoroughbred of the yesteryear, carried weights of over 130 pounds to victory in 15 races! Perhaps the breed of thoroughbreds is not being im proved as it should be. Or even maintaining standards of the im mediate past. Records It is not always a good sign when an unusual number of world's records are broken at a thoroughbred race track. It is, at times, an indication of a so called "paste board track." That is, one of an unusually hard sur face. At Juarez, Mexico, some years ago, A horse named Iron Mask broke the six furlong wdrld's record carrying a bur den of 169 pounds! The Juarez course was composed of hard clay. Many horses break down on "paste board tracks." They suffer from a condition similar to that of the truck horses re ferred to in the immortal lines: It isn't the 'eavy 'aulin that 'urts the 'orses 'oofs. It's the 'ammer, 'ammer on the 'aid 'ighway. Friday. July 13, 1956 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Langley, Purcell Invited To Appear For Portland Jury Portland UP. The Multno mah county grand jury today invited District Attorney Wil liam M. Langley and Portland Police Chief James Purcell Jr. to appear before it voluntarily to testify without benefit of im munity. In a letter signed by the grand jury foreman, Mrs. Lulu G. Mill er, Purcell was asked to appear again and "continue to cooperate by voluntarily giving your evi dence, under the waiver arrange ment previously entered into. Later you repudiated the ar rangement by refusing to give any further assistance." Advice of Counsel The police chief answered that, after consulting his attor ney, he would appear only under subpoena but that when he did appear he would not require "af firmative guarantees" of im munity. Purcell said in his letter to the grand jury that "in all I made four appearances before the jury and gave all the cooperation" and assistance within my power . . .' On June 27, 1956, I received a subpoena to appear and I imme diately responded by attending at the time required. I am now forced to act upon the advice of counsel." Cooperation Asked Mayor Fred L. Peterson asked Purcell and each member of the police department to "cooperate fully when called upon." District Attorney Langley, who was invited to appear before the jury next Monday morning, said he hadn't answered the jury's letter and would have no com ment until he did. The grand jury is investigat ing charges of vice and corrup tion in Portland and Multnomah county. The investigation-is be ing guided by Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton at the direc tion of Gov. Elmo Smith.
