(U.R) An investigation into the Illinois state auditor's questionable use of about $500,000 in state checks threatened today to have pos sible effects on this fall's presi dential election. Gov. William G. Stratton wait ed today for Illinois Auditor Orville E. Hodge to comply with his "request" for doubling the auditor's surety bond of $50,000 within 20 days. Looks For Replacement Stratton was reported already looking for a suitable replace ment to take over Hodge's duties. The auditor's office is under in vestigation by state, county and federal . officials because of charges Involving questionable use of about $500,000 worth of state checks. The troubles arising within the Republican ' state administration raised the possibility that Strat ton may have serious difficulty winning ' the state's electoral votes for President Eisenhower this fall. Democrats are sitting tight as the investigations are. carried out. But Illinois Democratic Chairman James Ronan called the charges against Hodge "a very good campaign issue." Stratton also told Hodge to get off the Republican ballot or face a party supported candi date in the November election. Stratton himself, is a candidate for reelection. Interested in 42 Checks Investigating authorities are interested in 42 checks amount ing to $536,226 issued by Hodge's office. Hodge's operation of his of fice came under fire when a Chicago newspaper, The Daily News, said it had found seven alleged payees of state checks had never received any money'. The newspaper's disclosures prompted investigations by pub lic officials, Wednesday, the FBI entered the case. -Hodge is a wealthy business man who won nomination with out opposition in the Republi can primary last spring. Honeymoon Trip Appears Certain New Haven, Conn. (U.R) The planned honeymoon flight of Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller to Europe on Friday ap peared certain today. The actress and the playwright had been subpoenaed to testify July 23 in a negligent homicide case but it appeared today that the court would permit the new lyweds to make a deposition in the case Instead of appearing in person. The couple returned to Mil ler's home in Roxbury from New York Tuesday night and found the subpoena under the door. It had been left there by private investigator Guy Magliaro. Con necticut law does not require that a subpoena be served per sonally. The Millers were subpoenaed to appear in Justice Court at Roxbury to testify about the death of reporter Mara Sherba- toff, New York correspondent for the French magazine Paris Match. Miss . Sherbatoff was killed June 29 when the car in which she was following the Millers' car to Roxbury for a news con ference) smashed into a tree. Miller stopped his car to give aid. The couple was married later that night. BAD UMPIRE DECISION? Pendleton, Ind. (U.R) The Reflector, inmate publication of the Indiana Reformatory,' chose to ignore a big story, a riot at the prison July 1 in which nine persons were injured. The clos est it came to commenting on the riot was a sports item saying a baseball game was interrupted on that day "due to unforseen circumstances." Dead line .
