Averell Harri- man'i camp today that he prob ably will use a Southern forum this week to call for a tough civil rights plank in the Demo cratic party platform. The New Yorker, who ad dresses a National Press club lunch here today, has his next major speech set for a Young Democratic meeting at Ashboro N. C, Saturday night. Now viewed as Adlai E. Stev enson's chief challenger for the Democratic presidential nomina- tion, Harriman is not expected to make any major bid for Southern support in his appear ance before a southern audience. Discuss Party Problems He is expected, instead, to talk about party platform problems in the North and why it needs a strong civil rights plank of the type Southerners oppose to hold Negro voters. Other political news: 1. President Eisenhower con ferred at his Gettysburg, Pa., farm with Republican National Chairman Leonard W. Hall to discuss plans for the GOP Na tional convention and campaign strategy. 2. Vice President Richard M. Nixon,- who returned Wednes day from an Asian tour, said his announcement of last April that he would be happy to be Mr. Eisenhower's running mate again still stands. The comment was Nixon's first on his political future since Mr. Eisenhower re iterated his second term .candi dacy. Scorti Knowland Announcement 3. Sen. Mike Mansfield ID Mont.) said Wednesday night that Mr. Eisenhower should have told the people directly that he intends to run again rather than passing the word through the White House "guard." The Presi dent's plans were announced by Senate Republican Leader Wil liam F. Knowland. In North Carolina, Harriman' will be in the home state of Gov. Luther Hodges, a Stevenson backer who recently questioned Harriman's ability to carry tra ditionally Democratic southern states against President Eisen hower. Most of the South is leaning toward Stevenson, whose sud- porters are anxious to write a party platform which the South will swallow, even if it protests. Exhibition of Nutrias Set To Interest More Raisers Nutria, beaver-like fur bear ing animals, will be on display tomorrow and Saturday at the Monarch Feed and Seed com pany farm store, corner of 10th and South Fir sts. A brown male, a white male plus several half-grown "'kit tens" will be exhibited. Joe W. Casad, local nutria rancher who is sponsoring the display, is the local agent for Purebred Nutria associates Inc., which is trying to create interest in nutria raising in southern Oregon. Casad's ranch is located at his home, route 1 box 399-A, Med ford. Purebred Nutria associates Inc. was formed several years ago, taking membership from about 400 nutria growers on the west coast. It provides protec tion for nutria growing from be coming "just another fur breed ing animal racket," Casad said. Ranchers are given advant ages such as free exchange of breeding males, collective grow ing pens, perfection of feeding methods and collective market ing through the association. Association headquarters are at Lancaster, Calif. Authorized brokers and sales representa tives for pelts and by-products produced by the association are W. S. Curtis and associates. Casad said that nutria ranch ing is expanding particularly in California. Oregon and Utah. The association estimated that the spring of 1957 pelting pro gram will gross about 8,000 pelts, the spring of 1958 about 50,000, and a continually in creased number in future years. Anyone interested in nutria raising may contact Casad. Sack's Legal Battle Said Not Yet Over Portland (U.R) The first degree murder conviction of George F. Sack, Portland apart ment house owner, was upheld by the Oregon Supreme Court yesterday but attorneys for Sack indicated that the legal battle to save him from the gas cham ber was not yet over. John Patrick Hannon, Sack's attorney, said his client's appeal would go to the U. S. Supreme court if necessary. Hannon said he would file a motion with the state court for a rehearing of Sack's appeal there and if that fails "we shall go to the Supreme Court of the United States." Sack was first . convicted in Multnomah county for the mur- Yreka May Get New Plywood Industry Yreka Possible establishment of a plywood plant in Yreka was announced this week at the Yreka Chamber of Commerce board of director's meeting. Chamber Manager Harry Creb bin said the Yreka Veneer com pany, which now has peeling operations at Happy Camp, is considering going into full ply wood production and may estab lish a plant in Yreka. According to Crebbin, a suit able location has been found for the projected plant. The plant, if constructed, would employ about 150 workers on a three shift basis. der of his wife, Goldie Sack, on Feb. 16, 1954. Power line Contact Fatal To Workman Burns (U.R) Robert Tally of North Powder was fatally in jured last night when he came in contact with a 2,400-volt line. He was employed for the sum mer by the California Pacific Utilities company .at Burns and planned to return to Oregon State college this fall. Tally was working with two ether men. He was approaching a pole to climb it when he came in contact with the wire. Tally was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Tally of North Powder. 'Monkey IriaV Judge Dies in Tennessee . South Pittsburg, Tenn. U.R) John Tate Raulston, 87, the presiding judge of the famous John Scopes "monkey trial" in 1925, died Wednesday at his home here. Phone 2-2111 Court and McAndrews Pilots Schedule 'Remedy' Meeting Chicago (U.R) The Air Line Pilots association announced to day a combined meeting of three association committees here July 23 to seek a remedy to the "obso lete and inadequate air traffic control system." The association's 12-man Air Traffic Control Committee and two committees presently inves tigating the crash of United Air Lines and Trans World Airlines planes in Grand Canyon, Ariz., will meet "to produce recom mendations helpful to govern ment agencies seeking solutions to air traffic control problems." C. N. Sayen, ALPA president. said the pilots investigating the crash scene had not yet fixed the responsibility of the crash on any individual group. The June 30 Grand Canyon tragedy in which 128 persons were killed the worst in the history of commercial aviation. Contract Awarded for Siskiyou Hospital Yreka A contract for con struction of an addition to Siski you County hospital was award ed to Al Giordano Construction company of Yreka, at the county board of supervisor's meeting this week. : The basic bid, which was the only one submitted, called for the work to be done for $65 126.17. On recommendation of R. J. Keeney, Medford archi tect on the project, two alterna tives were added. The first alternate called for $1,500 for tiling of floors and walls in toilet rooms. The other addition to the basic bid was $2,500 for building a sun porch level with the existing floor. Five Persons Killed In Head-on Collision Rock Springs, Wyo. (U.R) Coroner Bill Villanova said to day 'no inquest would be held into the deaths of five persons killed in a head-on collision near Rock Spnngs, Wyo., since no one apparently was an actual witness to the accident. The victims, four women and a man, were killed Wednesday seven and one-half miles wes of Rock Springs on U.S. 30. ' The dead were Mrs. Bertha Sikich, 40, Rock Springs, her 15-year-old daughter, Sandra, and her mother, Mrs. Minnie Ol son, Pasadena, Calif., all in one car; and Charles F. Pulham, 29, and his 28-year-old wife of Orem, Utah, in the other car. US Destroyer Aids Earthquake Survivors Athens (U.R) The Gxeek naval staff announced today the U.S. Navy destroyer Hawkins arrived at Thera Wednesday night to deliver water and em ergency supplies to survivors of the earthquake which ' wrecked much of the island earlier this week. The U.S. destroyer Hancock was also on its .way to the is land in the Aegean sea, Greek officials reported. Nearly half of Thera's 10,000 population was left homeless by the earthquake which rocked Thera Monday, and by the vol canic eruptions and a huge tidal wave which followed. Ike Not Gaining; -Doctors Unworried Gettysburg, .Pa. !U.R) Presi dent Eisenhower isn't gaining back his lost weight but his doc tors "are not particularly con cerned," an aide said today. White House Press Secretary James C. Hagerty told reporters the President's weight remains at 163 pounds. That is about seven pounds under what he weighed before his June 9 intes tinal operation. s "The doctors," Hagerty said, are not particularly concerned that he's staying at his weight that he's not gaining."
