CU.RJ A two- headed Hereford calf began its loth day of life with a double moo today and then took a brisk romp around the pasture. Dr. O. M. Fulcher, the veter inarian who has been keeping a close watch on the registered heifer, took a second look and said, "It has every chance of liv ing longer than any other two headed calf I've ever heard about." Little Princess Fay Helsman was born.unassisted June 28. She has two perfect mouths, two per fect noses, four eyes and two ears. "She walked backwards for the first couple of days," owner Mrs. Howard T. Lyon of High 25 New Cases of Polio Reported Washington ilhR; The Pub lic Health Service said today that 275 new cases of polio were reported in the nation last week, sharply less than the 405 cases reported in the comparable week of 1955. The new bases boosted this year's total so far to 2,931. At the same time last year the fig ure was 4,111. At this time of the year, polio cases usually swing up sharply each week. But last week there were only 17 more cases than the week before. . Although the total number of polio cases is running consider ably behind last year, the paraly tic rate is only down slightly. There have been 1,528 cases so far this year compared to 1,652 at the same time last year. Authorities said there is no way of measuring what effect Salk polio vaccinations are hav ing on this year's rate. However, they feel certain inoculations will prevent several thousand cases. Point, X. C, said, "because her head was so heavy." "But now she just romps and plays around the pasture like all other calves." Doubls Lif Little Princess lives a double life of Riley. She is fed three times a day. She just opens each mouth, moos twice . . . that is double moos . . . and she is given a ginger ale bottle full of milk in one mouth and a Coca Cola bottle of milk in the other. Little Princess was sired by B. S. Helsman II out of Princess Fay Domino. The mother pro duced three normal calves be for giving birth to Little Prin cess. Fulcher said he is "amazed." "I thought it would die soon after birth, but this is past the 14th day and I don't know of another two-headed calf that has lived longer," Fulcher said. Fulcher said the heifer is per fect except for the two center eyes. "It could see out of all four eyes when it was born, but the two center eyes have died ... I think from pressure," he said On Brain The veterinarian said the calf has "one functional brain" be cause it moos from both mouths and when one eye blinks the other must blink. Fulcher said he believed a "gene mutation" is responsible for the two heads. A gene is one of thousands of units that deter mine the characteristics of any offspring. Mrs. Harrison Lyon, whose husband is taking care of Little Princess on his farm here for Mrs. Howard Lyon, said people in Alleghany County are seeing double. "At least 2,000 people have come to see her." she said. "She romps and plays and frisks around and none of the other livestock pay her much mind." Mrs. Howard Lyon said she has received several offers for Little Princess but that she is undecided whether to sell. "She was so cute when she opened both mouths and mooed at me," Mrs. Lyon said. "And you ought to see her gobble the milk from the pop bottles." Catholic Daughters Protest Attire Portland (U.R The Catholic Daughter! of America were on record today in protest against what they called the .increasing immodesty of women's; 'attire; the opening of supermarkets and service stations on Sunday; and the distribution o sexy maga zines "and other indecent liter ature." ... Delegates to the national con vention here adopted a resolu tion yesterday agreeing to . "in fluence other women for a pos sible restoration of modesty in speech, action, styles, thought, literature and advertising." A spokesman for the order - said this resolution was a reflec tion of the Catholic church's con cern about increasing immodesty - of women's dress and behavior. Another resolution placed the ' organization on record as favor- i ing local level efforts 'to stop circulation of sexy magazines ."'and other indecent literature.' And still another resolution urged the Daughters to express in writing to theater managers their disapproval of bad movies and approval of good movies The convention was scheduled : to close today with election and . installation of supreme officers. Researcher Denies Communist Ties Los An-'eles U.R Mrs. Eli zabeth Poe Kerby says a state ment before the House Un American Activities Committee that she was active in a Commu nist group was "absolutely non sense." Mrs. Kerby was associated with John Cogley in making a study financed by the Fund fof the Republic on show business blacklisting. The report had ac cused New York newspaperman Frederick Woltman of being a "clearance" man for the enter tainment industry. Woltman denied the charge and testified before the commit tee that Elizabeth Poe was "very active in the Communist group" in the American Newspaper Guild while a Time magazine employee. Mrs. Kerby married Phil Kerby, editor of Frontier magazine, after leaving Time magazine in 1953. Mrs. Kerby declared Wednes day that "Mr. Woltman's state ment is absolute nonsense. "It is interesting to note that Mr. Woltman, even behind con gressional immunity, . does not say I am a Communist. He knows I never have been one." West Coast Airlines Dispute in Discussion Washington (U.R) Repre sentatives of the Airlines Pilots association were to meet with a mediation board here today in an attempt to ward off a strike by West Coast Airlines pilots. The association agreed "reluc tantly" yesterday to defer a strike against the airlines which had been set for midnight last night. At issue in the dispute are higher wages and a retirement plan for the pilots. Flood Insurance Program Approved Washington U.R) The House Banking committee today approved a bill calling for a $3,- 000.000,000 government spon sored flood insurance program. The measure and a companion Senate-passed bill would provide up to $250,000 insurance for businesses and a maximum of $10,000 on any one home. Under the House bill, business1 would pay 60 per cent of the premiums and the federal gov ernment 40 per cent. The gov ernment would decide what it would pay on home insurance. Under the Senate measure, fed eral and state governments would share 40 per cent of the cost. ' The administration recom mended an "experimental" fed eral flood insurance program after last year's disastrous floods in New England and the Far West the idea is to provide low cost insurance for flood victims who generally cannot afford high priced private flood insur ance. Police, however, said they doubted if the baby was Peter Weinberger who was kidnaped from his Westbury, N. Y., home July 4. Officers referred the re port to the FBI after Mrs. Gladys Conley told them a woman left a baby in her care for a few min utes after arriving here Wednes day at the airport. Mrs. Conley, an airport em ployee, said the woman left the child "between three and six weeks old" w-ith her while she made a telephone call. Mrs. Con ley said the woman came back and got the baby a few minutes later and drove off in a car with a man. . Coffee Drinking Boycott Urged New York !U.R) The presi dent of a New York coffee pro cessing company today urged consumers to "stop drinking coffee, as the best way to curb rising coffee prices. ' With prices at their highest since the peaks of 1954, William Black said "there isn't a thing we can do about it. except to stop drinking coffee." The head of Chock Full O' Nuts Coffee corp. said present prices don't reflect supply and demand. He pointed to Agricul ture Department reports that the current crop of foreign grown coffee beans which U.S. roasters depend on will top"" 50,000,000 bags, "the largest on record." Black said "All the South American countries have to do is hold back their supplies, and we have to pay whatever they ask through the nose." His statement recalled vigor ous protests and boycotts insti tuted by American . consumers when coffee price tags soared to 1954 peaks. Trade sources be lieve that the outcry and result ing lower demand were factors in pulling prices down from their highs. McMinnviile Editor Campaign Chairman McMinnville (U.R) The edi tor of the McMinnville Daily News - Register, . Phil Bladine, yesterday was named chairman of the state committee of State Sen. Carl H. Francis of Dayton, Republican candidate for attor ney general. Francis will face Attorney General Robert Y. Thornton, Democrat incumbent, in the No vember election. Bladine said he and Francis are agreed that the campaign will be waged solely on the is sues.
