Democrats Agree on Part-Time President Issue in Campaign Washington OJ.R) The Democratic high command was reported in agreement today that it should make full use of the "part-time President" issue in the 1956 campaign against Presi dent Eisenhower. i This view point was attributed to the campaign advisers of the three active Democratic presi dential contenders and to the ranking officers in Party Chair man Paul M. Butler'j national headquarters. Mr. Eisenhower erased any doubts about his second term candidacy Tuesday by passing the word through his congress . ional leaders that he is still avail able. He met with them at Gettysburg, Pa., where he is re cuperating from his intestinal operation last month. Feels Much Better According to Sen. Styles Bridges, the President told the GOP leaders that he felt in bet ter physical condition now than when he made his second term announcement Feb. 29, five months after his heart attack. Mr. Eisenhower was reported 'to have said that he had long been bothered by intestinal trouble and was glad to have it cleared up. By hitting at Mr. Eisenhower as a part-time President, Dem ocrats apparently hope to keep the health issue before the pub lic in an indirect way. This tech nique would be calculated to minimize the risk that stress on the President's health might backfire with the voters. Expect Strenuous Campaign Democratic leaders expect their presidential nominee to bounce around the country on a strenuous campaign schedule in contrast to Mr. Eisenhower's. The President made it plain last winter that he thinks barnstorm ing is beneath the dignity of a sitting President and that he would have no part of it what ever the state of his health. After Tuesday's developments, Senate Democratic Leader Lyn don B. Johnson said he was glad Mr. Eisenhower "feels his health is such that he is up to an ardu ous campaign." "It will be"" an arduous cam paign," Johnson added. Advisers to Adlai E. Steven son, Gov. Averell Harriman and Sen. Estes Kefauver were said to have agreed that the "part-time President" issue should be ex ploited. The managers of these three Democratic candidates held a strategy conference here with Butler and other party officials last month. General Manager Shelby Tuttle traced the development of SOS from its beginnings in 1926 to today in his annual report. The present site of the SOS plant on Stewart ave. was pur chased in the winter of 1928-29. Since its start, Tuttle said, the cooperative has handled well over 8,000,000 boxes of fruit for local growers. Riegel added that the list of independent growers joining is still expanding. C. W. Guches, plant superin tendent, reported on the instal lation of automatic bulk hand ling equipment which he said resulted in smoother handling of fruit and reduced costs . for the past year. V. A. Turpin, assistant man ager, and J. J. Finegan. sales manager, were credited with a great" part of the success of the past season. The meeting was preceeded by a turkey dinner served by members of the Phoenix Grange. More than 100 growers and their wives attended. Members of the board of di rectors will meet next week to select new officers for the com ing year. Board members in ad dition to Riegel, Carpenter and Arnold are Leonard Brock. A. E. Erockway, J. W.
