One hundred new books are ex pected to be available soon The Pacific Northwest Region of the U. S. Forest Service has won second place in group A "forestry division," of the wood products section in the National Safety council's 1955 contest, ac cording to Region Forester J. Herbert Stone, Portland. The Pacific Northwest region includes the Rogue River Nation al forest. Group A is composed of units which showed a total of more than 140.000 man hours worked during the year. Total number of man hours of work in the northwest region for the period was 4,853,065. "Forestry" is one of 11 divis ions in the wood products section of the safety contest. Stone said that the injury fre quency rate for 1955 "was an all time low in the. Pacific North west region of the forest service." DONT MISS . . . has finally paid off the dept The woman ran up the bill at H. B. Davidson's market in Bellevue, Mich., In 1913 and then moved away without pay ing. ' She rang the doorbell at the home of Davidson's son, Paul, apologized for being tardy in paying and handed over the money. Paul turned the money over to his father, who retired 13 years ago. NORFIELD'S SHOE SALE TREMENDOUS VALUES The chameleon's changes in color are due to temperature variations in light and the liz ard's feelings. " TOPS IN TRIOS The nation's tops in singing trios, the newcomers McGuire Sisters meet with old favorites the Andrews Sisters in Las Vegas, Nevada. The McGuires (left, top to bottom): Chris, Phyllis and Dottie, made their night club debut at Wilbur Clark's Desert Inn. Right are LaVerne, Maxine and Patti who came out of retirement to warble at the Flamingo. No Cause for Alarm Seen in Mid-Year Report on Economy New York (U.R) Banks, bus iiess, industries and individuals reported evidence of scattered "soft spots" in the economy at mid-year but they agreed unani mously that there was no cause for alarm. Many of those people affected by smaller paychecks, unemploy ment or reduced demand for their products sajd they expect ed to regain property equal to 1955 before the year was out. The softening showed up most ly in the automobile industry, home-building, the sale of farm machinery and in the slowly rising cost of living that some people are finding difficult to meet. The steel striks still was too young to be classified as a soft spot but reports indicated it might cost the economy $2,000, 000,000 in lost wages and pro duction if it lasted as long as a month. Reports from Washington said a long steel strike would not only upset the relative industrial peace of 1956 but also might stiffen employer resistance to wage demands in other indus tries during the rest of the year. Fewer Cart George Romney, president of American Motors, said fewer than 6,000.000 cars would be gold in 1956. But he said this was mostly due to "substantial overbuying" in 1955. And he predicted this condition would disappear by the latter part of 1956. . John L. McCaffrey, chairman of the board of the Internation al Harvester Co., said retail sales of farm equipment have been slow and accumulated in ventories have caused some cut backs and layoffs. He said farm ers were reluctant to buy ma chinery because of their dis satisfaction with commodity prices, drought conditions in many parts of the nation and uncertainty as to what would come of federal farm legislation. Other indications of soft spots came mostly in lines buried in reports of generally favorable conditions. Major Drain The government said income tax payments by major corpora tions had been a major drain on their revenue resources this year. This forced heavy bor rowing in some cases to meet obligations and pay for expan sions. The Federal Reserve Bank said business loans in the first five months of 1956 were "half a?a in as large" as in the cor responding period of 1955. The television industry had admitted a slight pinch in sales after the record sales of 7.4 million sets last year. Many dealers conceded that their dol lar volume and- profit margins were not so high as in 1955. SPLIT PERSONALITY Manchester, Tenn.
