Newspaper Page TextBurled Treasure Rifles Given to Mikado By Perry Said Valuable "The most important piece I picked up in Japan," said Frank, "is this. I know it will surprise you." It did. Instead of a rare Jap anese print, or an ancient bronze or old brocade, the treasure he held out to me was nothing other than an old U.S. carbine a Model 1840, as it turned out, made by Simeon North on a pat ent taken out by John H. Hall. It was a regulation percussion imoothbore, of .54 caliber, with a 21-inch barrel. Two brass bands bound it to the typical walnut stock. It had the large, quare-end trigger guard un usual in such weapons, along with the fishtail lever for oper ating the breechblock. There was no doubt whatever of its authenticity. The barrel was plainlv marked with the leg end "U.S.S. NORTH MIDLtn. TELEGRAPH COMPANY STAMP The stamp Ted held out to me was unlike any I had ever seen before. "I found this among some old documents I bought last week, and I was curious if you would know any more about it than I did, which was nothing." I looked at the stamp and ihook my head. It was a simple enough item, and there was no doubt as to its purpose, but be yond that I knew nothing. In the center of the piece was the figure 10, in the style' of block letters so popular back in the 1870s. Surrounding the num ber was a border of some kind of vine leaves. Above were the ini tials Ci.. & M. Below were the words Telegraph Co. Across the face of the stamp were more initials, "P. L. W., but in blue ink and obviously put on as cancellation. "What outfit put it out?" I asked. "A California firm," he an swered. Besides, any one interested in making fake firearms would certainly pick out something to counterfeit that would bring a far higher price than the usual top of $75 for the 1840 model. "This has a very special sig nificance to Navy men," Frank said. "And the reason is that when Commodore Perry, went to Japan in 1853-54 to open the country up to the blessings of the West, one ' of his gifts to the Mikado was several of these carbines. "I can't absolutely prove it, of course, but the documentation is pretty convincing that this is one of those Perry gave the Em peror! It's convincing enough, anyway, so that I've had two of fers for the weapon, one for S150 and another for $200." SO RARE, NO PRICE NAMED its operation before going out of business in 1892, it was operat ing 260 miles of wire, extending, even into Napa county." "It's a strange thing, to me at least," he went on, " to think that this long-gone telegraph company operated for 19 years and that this is the very first I ever heard of their stamps." I agreed that it was surprising, feeling somewhat amazed at my own ignorance. "Yes," he went on, "it was organized back in 1873 as the Princeton, Colusa and Grand Is land Telegraph Co. and then changed its name when incorpor ating some years later." "But what of the 'value of the stamp?" I asked. "Very satisfactory. Scott's United States Stamp Catalogue Specialized lists the stamp with out the blue initials they were the superintendent's and were put on when the stamps were sold as being worth $500. But with the initials it is so rare the editors couldn't put a price on it. BUY SET OF 'MUG' BOOKS ' "I know," he remarked. "And it's true I didn't try to sell that set I had. Just let it sit on a shelf. But 'mug' books get me down, even though they do have a cer tain value." "I suppose I should have made him a decent offer. Should have bought them," he said. When I went to see him a few days later, I had occasion to mention the name of Bancroft again. " George gave me a rueful look. "Remember those 'Chronicles of The Builders of the Common wealth," he asked. "Well, there they are." He pointed to a near by shelf. "I got an order for a set the other day. The buyer will pay $125 for it in good condition. So I had to pay a competitor $80 for these. He'd bought them for $40 from that fellow who came in here." (Relaased by McClur .
