Bartlert Ph. 3-4381 Police Clear 423 Cases Last Month The city police report for June included 490 cases, of which 423 were cleared. These included major and miscellaneous offense and miscellaneous public reports. Last year for the same month, the police report totalled 514 offenses and reports with 461 cleared. Percentage of cases cleared in the two months were 86 per cent this June and 90 per cent last June. A breakdown of last month's cases included major offenses, 55 reported, 15 cleared, for 27 per cent clear: miscellaneous of fenses, 401 reported, 374 cleared, for 93 per cent clear; miscella neous public reports, 34 report ed, 34 cleared, for 100 per cent clear. Most of the unsolved cases are larcenies and thefts. In the larceny-theft bracket under $50, 40 cases had been reported and only nine cleared. In the $50 and over bracket, eight had been reported and one cleared. Traffic and motor vehicle law violations accounted for 308, the largest number of any one par ticular type of offense. Some can get help from desensitizing injec tions, and others can get help at night by sleeping in a room from which the pollen has largely been removed by a filter in the window, or an air-conditioner. Many years ago I used to cor respond with Dr. Van Leersum, a Hollander, who, as I remem ber, was one of the first men in the world to teach that persons with hay fever and asthma can get help by sleeping in a room containing filtered air. He early sent me blueprints for an inex pensive air-cleaner which he was accustomed to have made for his patients. It consisted of a box in which was a fan that blew air from the outside into the room. On each side of the fan he put a glass fiber type of air filter. The apparatus was placed in the window of the patient's bedroom, and with this, many patients got considerable relief. How An Ignorant Swindler Can Keep Practicing Medicine I recently read in the paper about a man who, in some de vious way, obtained a license to practice medicine in a certain state. According to the paper, in 1938 he served a prison term for being in the abortion business. In 1945, with the help of some influence, he overrode the objec tions of his state medical board and got back his license to prac tice. In 1949, after an examina tion, he was reported to be too incompetent to practice as a phy sician, but since the American people are not interested in hav ing only educated physicians working for them, the man kept on practicing. Later, the Appel late Court of the state ruled, that after a fairly conducted ex amination he had failed and hence had no right to practice. But the man "knew the right people" and went on with his -.vork. Soon he as in jail for cheat ing people; and so, in 1952, his license was again revoked. He had been swindling diabetics by selling for $30 a supposed "cure" for the disease. It consisted of water with a little vinegar in it! For the next two years the man kept in practice by appeal ing constantly to higher courts for a re-hearing. Finally, the Su preme Court of the state decided against him and referred his case back to the Appellate Court. Now the man will doubtless keep out of jail for more years by asking for re-hearings. Ac cording to the state authorities, the man, first, is not competent to practice medicine, and second, is a crook and a swindler. Why don't I mention the man's name? Because experts tell me that when the health authorities expose a man as a fake doctor and swindler and ex-jail-bird, people feel so sorry for him, being supposedly persecuted by theh American Medical Associa tion, that they flock to his door as patients! After telling in this column of the stupidity of going to cancer quacks, I have had many a man write me saying that a much loved mother and hopeless can cer, and would I please tell them of a good quack to take her to. Poor fellow: because of bis great love and his desperation, he was willing to be robbed of his sav ings if only he could give his mother some hope, even for a month! Cancer Of The Lung At the recent meeting of Gen eral Practitioners, Drs. H. D. Adams, D. P. Boyd, C. R. Soud ers, and S. H. Jones, of the Lahey Clinic, reported five cases in which powerful radiation had completely destroyed a cancer in thev chest. This is good news. But it means that everyone, and especially every former smoker of two or three packs a day, who gets a chronic cough that does not let up, should go quickly for a thorough examination of his lungs. If he waits too long, a good surgeon may still be able to remove the tumor in his chest, but he won't be able to remove scattered daughter - growths (the metastases). Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer re quests for Information or to at tempt to diagnose by mail.
