M. Gruenther, had read up so
thoroughly on ileitis before his
visit to the hospital that every
one, including the doctors and
the first family, was calling him
"Doctor Gruenther."
Reporters who watched the
President as he left Walter Reed
hospital noted a switch in the
usual roles of husband and wife
as he and Mamie descended the
five steps from the hospital porch
to waiting car.
Mrs. Eisenhower, who does
not like height and has difficulty
on stairs, normally hangs on
tightly to her husband's arm on
any descent or ascent. This time,
it was her arm that the President
held tightly as they slowly and
carefully walked down the stairs.
On his arrival here, farmer
Eisenhower found his herd of
Aberdeen Angus cattle intact de
spite a report to the contrary.

MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL, TRIBUNE NINB
The erroneous report relay
ed by another well-known Angus
raiser was that a bear from a
nearby woods had wandered
onto a presidential pasture, kill
ed one steer and wounded two
others. A telephone call to the
President's neighbor and farm
overseer. Gen. Arthur S. Nevins,
scotched the rumor. All hoofs
safe.
The President's return to the
farm means less of a trip for at
least one item on his menu the
farm grown peas which were
among the first food he ate after
his operation at the hospital.
Besides the peas, Mr. Eisen
hower also has broccoli, lettuce
and other vegetables growing at
his farm in a small plot for "just
family" eating.
Most of the rest of the land
is in pasture. The peaceful pas
tures not only feed the cattle but
grandson David's pony Tony, his
burro a present from Spain's
Francisco Franco and the Pres
ident's and David's quarter
horses Doodle De Do and Spor
ty Miss were delivered to the
farmhouse on the President's last
week end there June 1-4.
