FOUR MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, July S, 1956 A Nichol's Worth of . . . Comment On This and That By HARMAN W. NICHOLS United Press Future Writer CI Washington U.R) What's new in Washington: The capital loves tourists, who drop a lot of money on their visits. Some times, though, they bring on head aches. The cop on the beat swears this one is gospel. It happened at a busy inter evening rush time. A Michigan motorist de cided to make a U-turn right in the middle of the street, some thing against the rules. -Hey, bub," yelled the law. "You can't do that here." The visitor poked his head out of the window and replied: "I think I can, if I back up a little." The Wolverine backed and he U-turned and the man with the badge shrugged, scratched his noggin and blew his whistle at the next change of lights. HarmaD Nicbnli section during "Why don't you ask your wife to make some other kind?" ask ed a fellow miner. "Wife?" cried the first undergrounder. "Who's married? I made these myself. Sen. Robert S. Kerr, the Dem ocrat from Oklahoma, came up with another "Kerr Kernel" in his newsletter. Said he: ' Even if you have the best aim, you still have to pull the trigger. Rep. James C. Wright Jr., the Texas Democrat, knows what hot weather is and Washing ton isn't much different from the Lone Star State. So the lawmak er goes to work early, when it's cool. He told his voters that when he gets down at a decent hour he can think and avoid the heat. of the Washington streets which "feel like a shapeless'sack of wet laundry." . In the Commerce Building they have an elevator for the exclusive use of Secretary Sin clair Weeks and his immediate staff. The little girl operator has a lot of time on her hands and knits while she sits, purling one and dropping two. Already she has knitted three sweaters. Jane Goodsell, who does a folksy column for The AFL-CIO News, allows in print that mere man is a nuisance in the kitchen. "Men," she says, "cook when they feel like cooking and they almost never feel like cooking when people are hungry." She winds up with the remark that you couldn't expect a man to clean up the kitchen. "You wouldn't expect Toscanini to sweep the hall after a concert, would you?" Jane says. The 4000 National Federation of Republican Women's Clubs around the country are heading up their press releases with the NFRW." There still is some confusion among visitors about where the President lives. Folks still walk up to guards on the Capitol grounds and want to know where the "President's home is." The White House, as all natives know, is down Pennsylvania ave. a piece. The opticians at the Medical Center here are located at 1720 Eye st. And speaking of eating, The United Mine Workers Journal likes the one about the worker who opened his lunchbox and growled: "Cheese sandwiches!" 4-H Club News Hayburners Club The Hayburners Horse club met on June 29 at the R. E. Wat son home. We went on a ride up Johns Peak and had our lunch and meeting. We returned to the Watson home where Marilyn and Marsha served refresh ments. Reporter. Jim Frink, Pig Club The Central Point Pig club met at the Eldred Charley home on Merriman rd. June 25. We had a film or judging chickens, hogs, and dairy cattle. After the film we judged hogs, chickens and cows. Jim Frink reported on his trip to Corvallis to 4-H sum ler school. Refreshments were served by Judy Carter and Mrs. Charley. The next meeting will be at the Chuck Taylor home on the Old Stage road July 30 at 8 p.m. Reporter, Russell Frink. ln- Injured Worker Frees Self With Own Saw Grants Pass (U.PJ An jured timber faller, both legs crushed by a falling tree, Mon day used his own power saw to cut himself free before rescuers arrived to aid him. Forty year-old James Fair child, working on the Frank Mc Tousic operation on Elk moun tain northeast of here, was cut ting a tree which fell prema turely and dropped across his legs as he ran. Still conscious, Fairchild used the saw to free himself even though his right foot was crushed and both bones in his left leg were broken. He was listed in good ' condi tion at Josephine General Hos pital here. Washington (U.PJ The Comp troller of Currency has issued a call for the condition of all na tional banks as of June 30. Installment Credit Sets Another Record Washington U.R) Install ment credit hit another record high in May, the Federal Re serve board has reported. At the end of the month, the public had almost $28,600,000, 000 of installment credit out standing on purchases of auto mobiles, furniture, appliances and othef items, as well as on personal loans and loans for home repair and improvements. The increase during May to taled $331,000,000, the largest to far in 1956, but only a little more than half as large as in May, 1956. Credit on automobile buying increased $170,000,000 during May this year. In May, 1955, it increased $503,000,000.
