No one has been leaking any White House secrets, but Sunday is the Eisenhowers' 40th wedding anniversary the ruby anniversary. President Eis enhower is one husband who doesn't forget anniversaries. When President Eisenhower Joins other American chief exec utives in Panama next month, many of his counterparts are ex pected to show up at formal af fairs wearing brilliant collections of medals and decorations. Mr. Eisenhower could wear quite a chestful himself, but he has de cided to wear only one decora tion a medal conferred on him by the Panamanian government. The "White House office" at Walter Reed hospital is a 20-by-30-foot lounge, the kind you gen erally find at the end of a hos pital corridor except that it's fancier and busier. The custom ary easy chairs have been aug mented by two desks, two type writers, and five telephones. An Army wife paid a quiet visit to the hospital's emergency news room the other day to see where the press operated on her favorite surgeon. She is Mrs. Leonard D. Heaton, wife of the Walter Reed commanding offi cer, the man who operated on President Eisenhower. She has been graciously turn ing down requests for interviews since that famous day, and she has not even peeked in on any of the dozens of press conferences, though bursting with curiosity. She is known ai a charming, vi vacious lady, but she leaves the spotlight to her husband. The short-lived order putting Pentagon military officers into "civvies" was overturned by a civilian who still wears his olive drab on occasions. Mr. Eisenhow er hauled an old field jacket out of mothballs last summer when the temperature dropped below freezing at his Colorado fishing camp. Two more uniforms are being preserved in the Eisenhow er museum at Abilene, Kan. his first dress blues, and a World War II outfit with its "Eisenhow er" jacket. Art ; Not long ago a Dublin art critic attributed the supposedly ' enigmatic smile of the Mona Lisa ' to a pair of badly fitting false ! teeth worn by the model. Now j the French art expert. Georges Iiario. says the Mona Lisa is a portrait of a man! Twins A married couple can be in sured against the expense of hav ing twins but the price of the policy is not the same for all couples. If there has been an un usual number of twins in the family of either the wife or hus band the policy costs more. That is because twin births usually run in families. Incidentally, Mrs. Paule Tremblay of Rober val, Quebec, has given birth to seven sets of twins. Her descen dant will have to pay plenty for twin insurance. (U.R) A fam ily life conference has recom mended that middle-aged couples build a "mutual interest bank" to keep from drifting apart after children leave the home. The annual conference at Cor nell university suggested that "middle-aged boredom" could be avoided by "banking" for future use the hobbies, travel and en terprises which couples did not have time for when life centered on the family. Umatilla Farmer Uses New 'Soil Bank' Portland (U.R) A Umatilla county farmer was the first Ore gon rancher to use the adminis tration's new "soil bank" pro gram by plowing under 802 acres of wheat in favor of putting the land In "acreage reserve." The farmer will receive $17, 853.43. according to Arnold N. Bodtker, administrative officer in Portland for the state Agri culture Stabilization and Con servation Committee. An appraised yield of 15,121 bushels for the farm was paid at the rate of $1.18 per bushel. This, it was explained, was con siderably less than the farmer would have received had he harvested the crop. Bodtker said the farmer de cided to turn the crop under because the wheat was intermix- Shipyard Worker Strike Headed Off Portland !U.R) A strike of some 14,000 shipyard workers on the West Coast was headed off yesterday by an 18-cent hour ly wage increase. The agreement, announced by Thomas Rotell, secretary of the Metal Trades Council, raised straight time pay from S2.29 to $2.47 an hour for average work ers. It also called for about one cent an hour additional for vaca tion pay. A working agreement on the wage increase and vacation bene fit fringe had been reached Wed nesday and was accepted by council delegates in meetings yesterday. Other minor details were worked out yesterday and delegates were packing their bags by nightfall. The agreement will be re ferred to local unions which have 30 days to vote and report back to the council. Effective date of the agreement is 12:01 a.m. Sun day, July 1.
