Nation's Traffic Toll Climbs To 14,720 for Year By UNITED PRESS The nation's traffic toll climb ed at headlong pace toward a new record today, spurred up ward by a flurry of multiple death accidents. Safety experts, studying rec ord-breaking figures for the first five months, predicted the pos sibility that motorists would set a new high In traffic fatalities this year. The National Safety Council said last month was the blood lest May in history with 3,170 persons killed on the highways compared with 3,100 last year. Year's Total 14.720 6 This pushed the year's total to 14,720, 9 per cent above the five-month figure In 1955. A safety council spokesman said the climbing death rate may also mean the July Fourth holi day will produce a tragically heavy toll. He said about 80 persons could expect to die on a Wednesday during almost any Cher week. Memorial Day, however, brought 56 per cent more deaths than on a normal Wednesday, he said. Accidents In which several persons died together accounted for a considerable number of the national toll. Mishaps such as the April 6 collision of a truck and a farm tractor near Normal, 111., which killed eight - farmers, sent the national toll rocketing upward. Killed by Trains Two train-auto collisions kill ed 12 persons in Ohio. Six died Thursday when a train struck their auto near Hamilton, Ohio, after another train killed six in a car near Elyrla. Also Thursday, two women and two children died when a truck smashed broadside into their car near Barrington, 111. Safety co-mcil officials said the increased deaths could not be blamed on greater travel alone, because the deaths are oc curring faster than the mileage is Increasing. During the first 'four mouths, council spokesmen said mileage Increased 8 per cent, but the traffic toll went up 10 per cent. Holmes, Democratic candidate for governor, said last night that the Rural Electrification admin istration program faced frustrat ing legislation on state and fed eral levels. Holmes criticized a move In the Oregon legislature to put rural electrification coopi on the same tax schedule as private utilities. He warned that such a move would be made unless Democratic administration was elected next fall. Holmes said state tax increases would boost cooperative electric rates to the point where much needed rural development would be slowed down. Head-on Collision Kills Ontario Couple Ontario, Ore. U.R) A head on collision on U.S. Highway 30 five miles north of here took the lives of an Ontario couple and injured a. Salem man today, state police reported. The victims were identified as Mitsutaro Kawamoto and his wife, Sayuya of Ontario. Officers said Mrs. Kawamoto was killed instantly in the crash and her husband died about two hours later. They were on their way to work in berry fields when the accident occurred. Seriously injured was Joe Richardson Farley, 21, Salem, a traveling salesman who was In the second car. Friday, Jun.
