Conservative Revolt Threatened Over Eden Policies London U.F9 A Conserva tive party revolt over Prime Mill later Anthony Eden's Cyprus policies threatened the Eden gov ernment today in the midst of the Commonwealth prime min isters conference. The revolt was led by the same empire-minded conserva tives who fought British with drawal from the Suez Canal zone base. They were pacified only when Eden promised that Britain would hold firm else where: now they complain Eden fa "selling out" in Cyprus. Capt. Charles Waterhouse, a conservative member of Parlia ment who led the "1922 commit tee" in the Suez revolt, called a protest meeting Wednesday night to try to head off any plans to give up the big Mediterranean island base. A total of 58 "back benchers" normally solid supporters of the government leaders who who take an inactive role in the House of Commons attended the meeting. This would be enough to topple Eden if they voted with the Labor party on the Cyprus issue. ' ' A significant development was the presence, by invitation of the rebels, of Edward Heath, chief government whip in the house. He listened in silence to one and one-half hours of stormy protest against the Eden plan for Cyprus political develop ment. The Invitation to Heath was a declaration the rebels mean business. Dealers Computing New Tax Payments Under Road Levy Washington (U.fO Thou sands of manufacturers, distribu tors and retailers must start com puting soon how much they owe Uncle Sam in new taxes on gaso line, tires and heavy motor ve hicles. The taxes take effect Sunday. They are included in a bill which President Eisenhower is certain to sign to finance the biggest highway construction- program in the nation's history. The Internal Revenue Service Is counting heavily on business men to acquaint themselves with details of how to collect and pay the taxes because it won't have time to organize a big educa tional program. A new form will be required for some of the taxes, but It hasn't even been assembled yet. The immediate headaches will arise over new taxes owed on so-calka "floor stocks." Among the fi-st who will have to com pute ihesb :axes are dealers in automobile, truck, bus and oth er highway vehicle tires. The tax will jump from five to eight cents a pound on tires and must be paid on the stock dealers have in their stores as of Sunday, On or before Oct. 15, tire deal ers will have to report to In ternal Revenue how many such tires they had on hand and pay this tax increase, plus the new levy of three cents a pound used in retreading tires.
