The Medical Roundup Emeritus C omul tan t In Mtdleiae, Maya tunic Emeritus Protestor of Medicine. Mayo Foundation YCif Mtatseam iLju Hew To Handle Menially 111 Many of the distracted per sons in a family in which one member has become mentally disturbed can be greatly helped by a manual just put out by the National Asso c i a t i o n for Mental Health (1790 Broad way, New York City). It was written oy umn tivun Drs. Robert A. Matthews, and Lloyd W. Rowland. Persons de siring a copy should write to the Association not to me. Important points made are that one must be patient with a mentally ill person. He is just as .ill as if he had typhoid fever or pneumonia: The only difference is that his brain and now his bowel or his lung is injured. One should never threaten him or bully him or strike him or call him names. As the great Clifford Beers wrote in that wonderful book, "A Mind that Found Itself," one should never try to get a mental ly ill person into a hospital un der false pretenses. This causes him to distrust his family and to cut himself off from them. When Mr. Beers was shanghaied into a mental hospital in this way he could not imagine that the man who had played such a trick on him could have been his dear brother. As a result, he spent two years trying to find some way of convincing himself that the man who claimed to be his brother really was. People should know that men tal patients are confused and often frightened, and if someone then orders them about, they are the more alarmed. Let us re member that a frightened man is likely to fight back. Often he could be reassured and quieted if the attendant would only speak to him in a friendly way; o- give a reason for his request, or if he would treat the patient as if he were sane. Talked Into Hospital Entrance Many a time in my office the relative who brought in a men tally disturbed patient was sur prised to see how normal the man was with me. As the patient later said, he was delighted to find someone who evidently saw that he was sane much of the time, and who then treated him as sane. Several times I have talked a dangerously psychotic man into going home, packing his bag and going to a mental hospit al. He agreed with me that he was mentally disturbed, and he was frightened about the change in himself. He agreed that it would be well if, for a time, he would go somewhere where he would be safe from injuring others and himself, and here he -could be! treated for his illness. j As is stated in the new Man- j ual, many of the persons who are depressed are really highly intelligent and good citizens whb, at times, contribute much to the intellectual life of their community. I always talk to such persons as if they were sane; and then they talk sanely to me. Anyone who hopes to help the psychotic or the insane must have great self-control and great patience and understanding so that he will not get angry when the man becomes argumentative or even insulting. One should never get into an angry argu ment with a psychotic person. Neither should one agree with a paranoiac when he says that a man on the next farm is beam ing radar at him. One should agree that the patient is disturb ed, but one can quietly suggest that there may be some other ex planation for this. Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer re quests for information or to at tempt to diagnose by mail. U.R) Early pruning and the use of proper fertilizers are the keys to suc cessful blueberry production, ac cording to fruit specialists at the Cornell experimental station here. Pruning should take place early in spring before the buds open. This prevents over-bearing and keeps the bushes from becoming too dense and twiggy. Tests at the experiment sta tion have demonstrated that fer tilizing with ammonium nitro gen promotes much better bush growth than the use of nitrogen in nitrate form. If you failed your June exams Wis year, n might be due to "low grade handwriting. A recent survey showed that no matter how objective the average professor tries to be in marking papers, a good meas ure of hostility against students with illegible or messy hand writing inevitably creeps into the professional outlook. Also, such writing will result in unconscious penalties against the student. The survey assessed teacher attitudes toward handwriting in colleges and universities in all parts of the country. All teachers agreed that they are inevitably annoyed at tne person who hands in sloppy looking work, and said their attitude in marking was defi nitely affected. An assistant professor of medi cine at Northwestern said: "Teachers tend to become im patient with illegible scrawls and despite due diligence, they may miss meanings of para graphs and sentences as a re sult of such impatience." A professor of psychology at Harvhrd said, "Handwriting is getting worse I have a hard time reading my own." v According to the survey, the liberal arts student is the worst offender in the matter of hand writing. The business, journal ism and law schools are stricter in their handwriting requirements. Terrole's Jewelry Expert Watch & Jewelry Repair 39 S.
