Trees, of course, live to be much older and the oldest we know, far, far older than the oldest animal is the California redwood, over 4,000 years old. But old as the redwood, it Is mighty young compared to our Rocky Mountains. They are mil lions of years old. But as moun tains go, even these Rockies are young upstarts millions of years younger than the Appala chians. And, compared to the earth, these Appalachians along our East Coast are infants on ac count of the earth being,, in all probability, at least 3 billion years old. How big is big? ' When wi want to compare anything that we know to some thing big, we say: "As big as an elephant." But compared to the blue whale, the elephant is small about as small as a mouse alongside a giant. 27-BUSINESS DIRECTORY Building McKEE BROS. And there are tiny plants bacteria so small that we can't even see them at all with out using high-powered micro scopes. But even these tiny plants are enormous when compared to atoms. And atoms are the tiny, tiny particles everything in this world of ours is made of. And of course far, far too small to be seen with our best microscopes. Sun Really Big So, from atoms to bacteria, to mice to elephants to whales, and yet, enormous as the blue whale -4.7-S. is, it would merely be a pin-point on the side of a mountain. And a mountain, in turn, wouldn't be much more than a pimple on the side of our earth. And our earth, is so small that if the sun were hollow a million of our earth would not fill it. But even our sun is tiny be cause there are stars that are millions of times ' bigger. And even the biggest of these stars, whose light comes down to our earth, are but a tiny part of our whole universe. How fast is fast? The fastest human being can step off a mile in four minutes. Race horses are faster. They can gallop a mile in a little more than one and a half minutes. But our fastest birds like the duck hawk can beat that all hollow: they can make up to a mile in 20 seconds. Automobiles Faster Modern automobiles of course are faster! The fastest racing cars can whip six and a half miles a minute. But beside a fast plane, even these speeds are slow. Today there are jets that can travel faster than sound and that is 12 miles a minute. Rocket planes go even faster LEGAL NOTICES SYNOPSIS OF ANNUAL ' STATEMENT for the year ended December 81. 1935, ot ine KI.KNS FALLS INDEMNITY CO. of Glenns Falls. Nixon's name was conspicu ously absent in a petition circu lated by Hall Tuesday among GOP governors attending the annual conference of governors. All 20 of the Republicans pres ent signed the resolution calling for the renomination and re election of Mr. Eisenhower. Final sessions of the confer ence were scheduled today. . 'Just for President' Hall told a reporter that the Eisenhower petition was intend ed "just for the President," who is convalescing from ah opera tion at Walter Reed hospital in Washington. "There is no reason that we can't send the President a get well card without it being inter preted as an anti-Nixon move," he said. He said there had. been some discussion of including the vice president with other Republi cans he consulted but that it was decided to make it for Mr. Eisen hower alone. Asked if there had been any complaints about excluding Nixon, he said there had not been. He said he endorsed Nix on's renomination in March and would be glad to join in signing a petition for the vice president if any is circulated.
